- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34eating right will not make you automatically thin. There is this new excerise plan going around, its called "get off your ass" it realy works.
- Roulette, on 10/12/2007, -1/+31I always felt that weight loss began at the grocery store. This article confirms that.
- bradleybuda, on 10/12/2007, -5/+29@orangeRam:
do you have any evidence for that statement? of course your body heats the water by thermodynamic action. but every calorie of heat that goes into the water to reach equilibrium temperature comes from your body. because we are warm-blooded animals and have a constant body temperature, our metabolic system kicks in to burn more calories to get our core temperature back to 98.6. so it's the thermodynamic transfer of heat that causes the calorie burn. - weaszel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+22FTA:
"Forget the salad before a meal; have soup instead. A study by Dr. John Foreyt of Baylord College of Medicine, found that people who consumed a bowl of soup before lunch or dinner lost more weight than dieters who didn't. This is because soup fills you up better than salad, since salad generally consists of 75% water."
Yes, and soup generally consists of 75% solid matter. - orangeRam, on 10/12/2007, -10/+31Some of those are incredibly misleading
For instance, 16 oz. of 40 degree water taking 200 calories to burn...that maybe true in a lab, but definately not in your body. Sure, cold water does have a negative calorie effect, but its only around 25 calories because its only the first few ounces that your body must initially cool, thermodynamics cools the rest as it adjusts to your body temperature
Another being fatty fish. Omega 3 fatty acids have no real measurable metabolic effects, they're good to have because they keep the lining of veins and arteries healthy so that the body can better transport nutrients through the blood
And soup instead of salad? They just got done telling you that vinegrette and all different kind of vegetables are good food choices and then the contradict themselves saying its better to have soup. Not to mention that there is really no soup you can get in a restaurant that isn't loaded with sodium and cholesterol and probably a good helping of saturated fat too - D3koy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+18Surely it was just overlooked. Everyone knows cake burn fat and raises metabolism.

- mojaam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13How about weight gain? I've been trying to gain weight and I eat too much yet I either stay the same weight or even lose some weight. Anybody know the medical term for this?
- orangeRam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@flamingmb
Take a person that has eaten like crap for several years and put them on a diet where they eat 6 small meals a day with a healthy balance of protein, whole grain carbs and healthy fats with between 0.5 to 1 gallon of water per day, and I guarantee you they lose close to 5% of their body weight in two weeks without exercise. I know this for a fact because I did it myself four years ago. I went from 5' 7" 185 to 172 in that two week period, and no I wasn't starving myself. - DaFunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8FTA:
"Simply drinking eight 16 oz. glasses of water throughout the day, cooled to 40 Fahrenheit, will burn 200 calories; that's equivalent to running 3 miles!"
You must run unbelievably slow to burn only 200 calories after 3 miles. Heck, you could walk 3 miles at at only 2 mph and still burn close to 300 calories (for a 150 lbs person). I'm not trying to nitpick here, if you want to use these things to help lose some weight, knock yourself out. But to think drinking a gallon of cold water a day is equal to running three miles is crazy. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8This can depend on your age. When I was young I had a high metabolic rate where my body burned energy faster then I could eat. I ate allot and was skinny as a bean pole. Then I hit 35 and began to put on weight. Now at 40 I am constantly trying to take it off. :P
- CaptShmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7some energy drinks have tons of sugar though, make sure to read the label first
- Strongoloid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I suppose it would help for the article to define kinds of soup to eat. Do they want you to eat (drink) something thin like chicken broth? Or something more hearty like a chowder?
- orangeRam, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@ bradleybuda
you're right, 25 is an rough estimate, but scientifically, a calorie as we know it for nutrition in the US is 1000 thermochemical calories, or like they say in metric countries 1 kilocalorie. A kcal is the amount of energy necessary to raise 1 kg of water 1 degree celsius, so 200 calories would be enough to boil 2 kg of water from its freezing point. Now, 2 kg of water is equal to 2 litres of water (why can't we use metric, its so simple). 2 liters is 67.62 oz, meaning that it takes 200 calories to boil 67.62 ounces of water from its freezing point. That is four times as much water so it should take roughly 50 calories to boil that 16 oz. of water. Body temperature is approximately half the boiling point of water, so it takes roughly 25 calories to raise water to the body temperature. - CaptShmo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6i think also it depends on your eating habits... if you were raised to not waste food, like i was, you will eat everything on your plate no matter how much soup you had. in that case i'm sure it's better to get a light salad.
- Pic0, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8weight loss begins in kitchen, or the store, or the farm. depends how far you want to take it :p

I just looked at the article again and saw that. I guess I just misread it the first time. It does prove the math I went through, for no reason at all. - tony23, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@orangeram - care to share the details of your diet?
- orangeRam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ Quactaur
One Norwegian single blind study showed that people who took 6 grams of fish oil per day burned more calories throughout the day than those who didn't. They didn't put them on identical exercise regiments, they didn't monitor their diets...basically, they just fed half fish oil and half a placebo and attributed the excess weight loss to the fish oil...so there is no real evidence that omega 3's increase metabolism
The reason they're a "staple" of low-carb diets is because low carb diets are comprised of omega-rich foods, so you're getting them by proxy - amblongus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Those cold-water calculations' greatest flaw is that the calories your body burns by warming up the water are chemistry-lab calories. The kind of "calories" normally measured in food we eat are actually kilocalories in chem-lab terms.
- Rinnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's gross. I've never heard of it actually helping fat loss before other than in some fad diets. I have however read the studies (albeit, in rats) that suggest vinegar can help glycogen get back into your muscles faster after working out. I usually down at least a tablespoon of this nasty apple cider vinegar diluted with water right after workout. Ugh. You can mix lemon juice with it, but I find that just holding my breath and downing it ASAP is the least painful. More info on that study here:

- synsynackack, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ride your bike every day.
- silverfire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I prefer all the metabolism boosters in energy drinks. Caffiene increases glucose (blood sugar) metabolism rate, taurine increases metabolism of ingested fat (indirectly via bile production), L-carnitine increases metabolism of fat in general by aiding fatty acid transport to cells' mitochondria, and B vitamins also boost metabolism.
Feel wired AND burn energy at the same time. I'll take it!
It also has the "pleasant" side effect of washing away caffiene withdrawal-induced headaches :D - Kohath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But if you eat "smarter" and end up eating more calories than you use up, you're going to GAIN weight. Even if you eat super-duper-duper smart. It's not how smart you eat, it's how much.
On diets with little exercise, you can lose fat. You can also lose muscle. It's not either/or.
I heard it 100 times. You "can't lose weight without eating right and exercising". I heard it before my diet. I heard it after I lost 10 pounds. I heard after I lost 20, 30, 40, 50 pounds. And no matter how many pounds I lost, people still told me it wasn't possible to do it that way.
Exercise is good. It's much better to exercise when you diet. It's not 100% necessary though and if you need to lose weight, you shouldn't let your dislike of exercise get in your way. Start by eating less. - Quactaur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Excercise helps. In particular, lifting weights significantly raises your metabolism and burns calories, making it more effective for losing weight than aero (though you still need that for general fitness). You can also watch tv or a movie whilst lifting weights, which makes it more fun.
- Archon810, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4--digg for you for misspelling "weigh" so grossly.
- diggdeep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Over the same distance, you burn the same number of calories walking as you do running. Running just saves time.
http://ask.yahoo.com/20050906.html - garytay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Running to the toilet every 30mins does help lose some calories.. :D
- Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Sorry boys, weight loss begins with daily cardiovascular excercise. Get your heart rate up for one hour a day, 7 days a week on an eliptical trainer. You can eat anything you want, it burns off, and you balance your weight. Plus, I eat french fries so my joins are more lubricated for better hi kicks HI-YAH!
- Kohath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The only thing that always works is to eat less food than the energy you use.
Every other diet is either a crap-shoot because it's a gimmick, or a way to trick you into eating less food than you use in energy. Every single one. - affiliate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmmm if I am drinking ICE cold beer am I burning FAT?
- Heembo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Do you have any taste buds left?
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You will thank yourself for the rest of your life for beginning to eat healthier at 14 instead of 24 or 34.
That said, if you're thinking of dieting in general you should *avoid* "low fat" foods that have been engineered to be that way, as you will get a lot more complex carbohydrates and refined sugars added to those foods to make them taste anywhere near as good as their full-fat counterparts. And fat is important for a body still in the growth stage. This warning doesn't apply to things like lower-fat hamburger or low fat milk - just things like "low fat" crackers and chips, or low fat "diet drinks" like SlimFast. - dwtd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@orangeram
It's *8* 16oz glasses or 128oz or 1 gallon of near freezing water, not just 16oz. The number I've heard is 123 calories to warm 1 gallon of ice water to body temperature. The actual number probably falls somewhere in between. - ord0x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah. The earlier you start eating healthy, the better you will be in the long run. I know at 14 I didn't care what people said, but eating right can reduce the risk of just about every ailment that will plague you in the future. Pick up a copy of "Men's Health" sometime. It has a lot of neat information (aside from working out tips) about dieting and just things in general. Eating right will give you more energy.
And a huge plus, if you learn how to cook healthy meals that taste good, you'll have girls banging on your door for life.
You can't lose. - TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4kevinrose really needs to add a food section there are so many good articles out there that don't really fit into "health"
- Kohath, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Exercise uses energy. Therefore exercise directly helps in losing weight.
People think that diets are tricky. They're not. They couldn't be more simple. Use more energy than you take in and you get thinner.
You don't need to do any kind of special diet. Low fat diets don't help you lose weight if you eat too much low-fat stuff. Low sugar diets don't help you lose weight if you eat too much low-sugar stuff. Any diet doesn't help you lose weight if you eat too many calories, no matter how healthy the food is. (Low carb diets are sometimes an exception.)
"It doesn't matter if you eat less if all you eat is cheese."
You are 100% wrong. I lost over 100 pounds. I ate pizza, fast food, and cookies. I drank beer. I never ate a salad. I just ate small amounts. I exercised, but it was a secondary factor. It took 20 months of eating small amounts though. - tpoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@mojaam
it's called a tape worm - saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is one of the reasons that "six small meals" make a much bigger impact than "3 smaller meals". When you have a constant intake of food, you do not ever reach the "I'm really hungry" stage where you trigger a starvation mode.
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Because you lose muscle mass. If you want to lose fat, you have to eat smarter. And you use exercise to burn off calories you do take in.
You ever notice that how anorexics always are thin, but look fragile? It's because they lost all their muscle mass through starvation and not eating right. - egrabosky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2cigarettes

It's not always true for everyone...
I changed my diet about 7 months ago, and tried the no exercise thing, and I still struggle with it. Not everydiet works for everyone. If it does work for you, fantastic. Eating better is a great habit, but a good plan for anyone includes eating well AND exercise. Find me a successful dieter who didn't do decent amounts of both without surgery... - yoshitx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sex. And if you are into team sports, orgies.
- pkulak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It said the word "toxins". No digg.
- jimmyjimbo13, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Actually based on my personal experience, exercise has more of an effect on weight loss than a healthier choice of foods. Sure, a healthy choice of foods has a good effect on your body but if you don't exercise, you will lose weight more slowly than if you exercised a lot.
- CrackHappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@DaFunk - no *****! I just looked at that for around 3 minutes and was a little confused by walking very slowly using up a LOT more calories than walking fast! WTF?
- kakapu4u, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Marijuana may make you want food, but if you consider that an increase in metabolism, meaning calories are burned more easily, it's probably overwhelmed by the quantities of food you consume. What you end up with is more calories going to fat than if you hadn't gotten stoned and eaten more.
More research is needed. :) - heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3http://science.howstuffworks.com/question447.htm
So in the case of a 16-ounce glass of ice water, your body must raise the temperature of 473.18 grams of water from zero to 37 degrees C. In doing so, your body burns 17,508 calories. But that's calories with a little "c." Your body only burns 17.5 Calories, and in the grand scheme of a 2,000-Calorie diet, that 17.5 isn't very significant. -
