- JasonCox, on 07/12/2009, -5/+31Welp, I'm *****.
Now where did I put that bacon... - inactive, on 07/12/2009, -5/+24***** that, food is awesome.
- 1longtime, on 07/12/2009, -0/+17Apparently "doing things" causes you to die faster.
- JerseySlam, on 07/12/2009, -1/+17I bet you're a treat at parties
- dha07030, on 07/12/2009, -0/+15What about if you need a high calorie diet because you exercise frequently?
- BoneheadFarker, on 07/12/2009, -0/+13What a waste of a first comment. Where in that article did it even mention evolution?
- Corbinwaltz, on 07/12/2009, -0/+12"Evolution is way too complicated for Athor, god of atheism" - I think you missed the point of Atheism.
- macmcraeart, on 07/12/2009, -5/+16LOL. The concept of an all powerful god who is all knowing and everywhere disproves ITSELF in a world as ***** up as this one. It is called "the problem of evil" you moron. And it killed your make-believe Judeo-Christian god many centuries ago. Long before darwin.
- gcnaddict, on 07/12/2009, -2/+12I'm finding this to be true, but that's also because I've cut my calories to lose weight.
Hell, it's working. I don't understand why people have such a hard time losing weight; all you need to do is cut calorie intake to 1500 or so per day (1200 for women) and walk one mile per day (dedicated walking, not walking around the house) to keep the metabolism up. Simple and easy.
Once you're done, just slowly bring it back up to 2000 calories per day and increase the exercise you do with your newfound body. - ShoggothDreams, on 07/12/2009, -2/+10How many times will they duplicate this same study, same result? We get it already!
- Checkerd, on 07/12/2009, -0/+8Check under the cake.
- pazimzadeh, on 07/12/2009, -1/+8I really don't feel like researching ants right now so can you please tell us a short version of "the truth" and why ants' lives support your idea?
- snafflepaffle, on 07/12/2009, -0/+7You can watch evolution in action in the short course of your lifetime, as every known antibiotic starts to become ineffective against some or perhaps even all species of bacteria.
- snappleman, on 07/12/2009, -1/+8Damn. Do you just go around Digg, looking to start arguments about Darwin and your ***** ant theory? This is the second post of yours that I've seen in the last few minutes and it's the same argument! Just because ants haven't changed much over time (according to you) means evolution doesn't exist?? Maybe you should do some research about whales or something...
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -0/+6That pretty much sums it up. And to think there's a multi billion dollar industry that has enough revenue to send a man to the moon, for what gcnaddict eloquently summarised in two short paragraphs.
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -1/+7To a third, or else you are saying it is worse to cut your diet by 33% rather than by 50%
- Kate1240, on 07/12/2009, -0/+5Dugg for stating the obvious..
"Finkelstein said. "Watch what you eat, keep your mind active, exercise and don't get run over by a car."
LOL - dojocasino, on 07/12/2009, -0/+5Enjoy it while it lasts.
- SystemicThought, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4When you're hungry all the time, it just feels like forever.
- yoyar, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4You misplaced bacon? Oooooooooohhhhhhhhhh Kaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyy... Have you noticed any odd smells in your home? Perhaps you have misplaced other fatty foods, such as cheeses or lard?
- tgc1, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3I've been doing what you mentioned for the better part of 7 months. I don't have a new body. Sure, I felt a little better. I walked on average about 2-5km (about 2-3 miles) per day, every single day for 6 months straight (through winter I might add, enduring up to -30 celcius weather, hail, snow, rain, etc...). This last month or so i've slowed it down and gone a lot less.
I think it depends on what body type you are to begin with. This is the same problem I had when I went to the gym for a few years. My body type didn't change. I'm an endomorph. I naturally have a little more pounds than the next guy, but I build muscle like it's nobodies business. Kind a tradeoff I guess.
If you're an ectomorph or a mesomporph, you'll probably have an easier time keeping the pounds off and keeping them off. Some people also have a higher natural metabolism. So what works for one person may not work for everyone. You can't beat or change your genes.
But I agree, and highly recommend the daily walks. They feel great. And they keep your spirits up. - skipvt, on 07/12/2009, -1/+4Walking around complaining your hungry all the time doesn't sound like high quality to me.
- curtisag, on 07/12/2009, -2/+5There is also the critical factor of quality of life versus quantity of life. If you have you literally starve yourself to live maybe 5-10% longer, that's not much of a bargain. I'd much rather eat healthy and in balance with what my body burns. Calorie restriction makes you look too skinny. I've seen people who have been on this diet and they look horrible after a few years.
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -3/+6the article is true. the less calories you intake the higher efficiency you train your body to operate at... until a certain point of course.. but the point is humans have been a starved species ever since we came into existence, and only as of late have we been eating so much... were just not used to it (obviously, if you look at all the fat people)
- numb401, on 07/12/2009, -1/+4Ever tried exercise?
- macmcraeart, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3Burned alive by calories. There is a poetic metaphor in there somewhere.
- k3rfuffl3, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3The thing most people don't get is that your quality of life is actually better compared to the same age group. You live "5-10%" longer because you don't age as badly.
- skipvt, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3Sound more like a study to mistreat monkeys for 20 years. I know let's starve a bunch of monkeys and see how long they'll live!
- Gr00ver, on 07/12/2009, -1/+4I was hoping for 'eat more, drink more, smoke more and live longer'. Well.. one can dream.
- SirBruce, on 07/12/2009, -1/+4Locke's analysis isn't sufficient to resolve the problem.
Suppose I got into an ice cream store and I'm offered the choice of chocolate or vanilla. Traditional free will means that sometimes I choose chocolate, and sometimes vanilla, and I can choose either according to my own choice, not predicated upon any antecedent causes.
But suppose I *really* like chocolate and *hate* vanilla. It could come to pass that over my life I *always* chose chocolate, *every time*, and never vanilla. Now, although I was free to choose vanilla, I nevertheless chose chocolate. I would still have free will, yes? Just because I never chose the alternative doesn't mean I didn't exercise free will in the choosing.
So the fact that free will allows people to choose evil is not sufficient to explain why evil exists in the world. Because if God is truly all powerful, he could still have imbued man with free will, but nevertheless that man *always* chose good and *never* chose evil. God did not imbue us with this sort of free will. Therefore, God is either not Omnipotent or not Wholly Good. - vincrap, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3Wait you're telling me not being a fatass will help me live longer?
- k3rfuffl3, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3...says the fat kid
- zeppo, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3"This monkey's gonna change my life...
...mmmm, I can't wait to eat that monkey!" - NoTiG, on 07/12/2009, -1/+3I think there is a misconception of why this works. The reason why you will live longer is not because the total amount of calories you eat is fewer... but rather because it enhances your digestion.
There is another way to enhance your digestion , but also.. without cutting how many calories you eat and that is doing the day on day off diet... but only for people with stable insulin levels who will not pass out due to hypoglycemia. - staystilljason, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2In your mouth
- secrity, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2Other than as tongue in cheek or as an exercise, atheists do not attempt to disprove the existence of gods. Atheists have no reason to disprove the existence of gods because the burden of proof is on those who profess the existence of one or more gods.
- snafflepaffle, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2There's also the inconsistency between free will and the idea of Jahweh's omniscience. If an all-powerful god knows what you'll do in advance, you are just living out a script. In reality, you have no free will. And the problem of infinite regression, ie. "If the universe needed a creator, why didn't god need a creator?" etc. Theology is merely the attempt to paper over the poorly-thought out mythology of a bunch of desert savages with some rather silly rationalizations.
- Import98, on 07/12/2009, -1/+3A study like this is irrelevant IMO. Humans have different needs then animals and individuals have different calorie needs. Under eating can be just as damaging just as overeating can cause obesity. Just eat healthier foods (Not saying you can't treat yourself to junk every once in a while) and exercise and you'll be alright.
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2so wait, wait, consuming less calories actually makes you skinnier, and helps you live longer, surprising.
- cablejimmy, on 07/12/2009, -1/+3Works for Ethiopians.
- DerangedPenguin, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2This is just plain obvious. The not so obvious "...A 20-year study found..." Who the hell put forth the money for a 20 year study? While this is perhaps a nice idea to make the study what do you want to bet that this has gotten government funding for the past 20 years. They could have hired my 102 year old grandmother paid her a visit and have gotten the same research results all for the price of an airline ticket and she would have made them a batch of cookies from scratch.
- Peynis, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2Well, don't forget there's also a multi billion dollar industry working in the exact opposite direction.
If you can only buy the healthy, untouched food in those rare, specially assorted stores or on a market once a week, while you can get a crappy burger that destroys you at pretty much any given time in any given place, there's something wrong with the world. - ZenithV, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1"I have learned that to live is to suffer, and to suffer is to live" -Jon Stallworthy, Firstborn.
- tehstyles, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2***** you guys, I weight 117, I ***** can't GAIN WEIGHT!!!!
- bdbr, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2What duplicate studies? They've tested it on small animals because they don't live very long. That doesn't mean the same applies to primates that do live a long time. Of course, it takes a long time to determine an impact on aging for a long-lived species.
- SirBruce, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2It's not my original argument; I read it in college. But it certainly convinced me. If I were a Christian I think I could easily jettison the idea of Omnipotence. God doesn't have to be able to do everything, even if we only mean the logically possible, in order to have still done everything else Christian's believe. Much more problematic is the idea that a God is not wholly good or wholly compassionate; I think such a God is far more "likely" (if that has any meaning in this context) but far more disturbing theologically; like the Greek Gods, you're worshipping them more out of fear than praise.
- Peynis, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2Yeah, now that would be a total shame.
If there's one thing we can say with certainty, it's that live totally won't be worth living 80-100 years from now. Better quickly pave our way into heaven, because having an afterlife is way more likely than life being good in the future. - Peynis, on 07/12/2009, -1/+3Awesome! That mean's I'll live to become infinity years old.
- eqrunner, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2Didn't we just see an artical last week about it being good to have those extra pounds"?
