- ProfChaosOmega, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23my heart goes out to you.
- flippedcracker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16why does being half flip, half white make it harder to find a donor?
being half flip, half white myself, i'd certainly help if i was a match. - themurph2099, on 10/12/2007, -10/+24@kevin45
Wow...just..wow.
I'm not one for starting flamewars, but could you be a bigger prick? This person is just trying to get the word out about a 2 year old child in desperate need of a life saving transplant. - scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18Digg is full of *****.
- Snowcone, on 10/12/2007, -11/+21Way to be cruel and insensitive guys. A 2 yr old child could die from cancer and all you have to say is "Bah, this is spam"? Get a goddamn heart.
- markman07, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I'll give them the benefit of doubt and go with "no spam" the person is asking for live saving help.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+17Yeah you never know, GL to ya!
- XLmedia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Agreed...what does it take to 'unbury' the story?
- JimMessenger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8ExSlashdotter said: "They're saying it because its not a news story per se. Its somebody posting to get attention (in the fashion of the guy yesterday going to quit his job)."
So, toddler dying is not news... Britney traipsing around without underwear is. I got it now. - toppgun, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Why is this being marked as spam? Is saving a human life that unimportant to you? He is aware of the world around him, feels, thinks, breathes. If it is possible to save his life, then we as a community should try to. Just because he is 2 years old doesn't mean he doesn't have the right to continue living. In our troubled time with thousands dying from hunger and disease and war the least we could do is try to save one life. He may mean nothing to you, but to those around him that love him, that care for him, he is everything. Bring this family comfort and help
- pyroglass, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9http://www.communitybloodservices.org/bone_marrow_donor_1_hla.htm
This is important. I have actually been a donor for someone.
I donated my marrow about 6 months ago, and the recipient is currently getting better, gaining weight, and is totally on my marrow.
This is a good thing to do, so if you can, see if you can find a blood drive which also collects platelettes to be put on the national marrow registry. - RobTyree, on 10/12/2007, -7/+14If it was you or one of your relatives would you give a rats ass if you pissed a bunch of people off trying to help find a donor?
I didn't think so. Either be constructive about this guys effort or go ***** yourself. Has humanity really fallen that far that we bitch about being spammed when someone is trying to save a life? - JimMessenger, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14Why do people keep saying this is SPAM? The site is ABC Channel 7 news in California. I was expecting to see Joe Blow's made-for-adsense site.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9What a pathetic bunch of whining kids on here... this might be SPAM by definition but who cares? If you know you're not a match for sure then go about your business. If you happen to know anything maybe you could pass it along. Takes 30 seconds of your time really.
We're not talking about some guy data mining or trying to get hits on his ebay auction here. Someone is trying to utilize a site to reach the lord knows how many thousand people that maight read it in order to broaden his search for something that might save a child's life and all you can worry about is that its SPAM?
Get some perspective kids... someday if you're lucky enough to graduate middle school and breed you might find yourself in a similar situation. - maisis00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7If this works, I say MAJOR KUDOS to the Digg Community.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -18/+23Screw you... if it works why not.
Good Luck. - XLmedia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Thanks for your support and congrats on being a successful match!
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Same thing that happened to my next-door neighbor. Good luck! It's interesting to see how technology impacts the search for donors, even if only one specific case is presented.
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8Exactly, digg is a public tool, this is the first I've seen here, and good for this person to find such a tool that reaches across a wide variety of people. What ever happens to this digg submition after all the "spam" reports people have been filling, It has already reached the front page, and hopefully someone who can help did. Good luck.
- kokorhekkus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Googled a bit and it's because a) bone marrow type is a herited trait and b) mixed heritage is rare in the bone marrow donor registries (one quotes 2% with mixed background).
- flippedcracker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5@arunforce : i am half flip, half white (hence my username)
- briando, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9If this guy and his cousin are in such a position that they feel finding a donor in time through conventional means won't happen, then, spam or not, I support him.
- XLmedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thank you. You can read more about the search and why it's so difficult to find a match by visiting http://www.helpharrison.com
- twiztedambience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Maybe for once Digg can actually do some good and literally save a life. It certainly beats having something "newsworthy" to read for 15 seconds as you scroll through your RSS feeds...
There's nothing wrong with a little public/private service now and then which helps someone. And if this great idea continues, maybe digg will need to create a seperate section for these --- so what? More power to those who find success with this.
Shame on any of you who are putting this down as spam. In fact, the very nature of this post is news in itself. It definately sheds light on how hard finding donors can be. - kokorhekkus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Also found one real mixed heritage case that illustrates the problem: Rod Carew (baseball player) had a daughter that was half panamanian and half jewish. None of the 2 million donors matched her and she couldn't be helped.
So even if this doesn't help this poor kid - lets use this to do our little bit to raise awareness that mixed heritage bone marrow donors are needed since they are so rare.
Some reading:

http://www.communitybloodservices.org/bone_marrow_donor_92_donor_story_1.htm - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow. Some seriously heartless diggers.
1) It doesn't conform to the definition of Spam. It's not trying to swindle you out of your money, sell you a product or trying to make your penis bigger.
2) It's trying to get the word out that MORE PEOPLE NEED TO BE TESTED for the potential of HELPING TO SAVE A LIFE!
And the fact that people like Kevin45 are HAPPY that the story was buried and off the frontpage really makes me ill. I almost wish there was a God so I could see people like you burn in Hell.
Hopefully the FSM will commit you to an eternity of eating Noodle-Roni. - RobTyree, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yes, race makes a big difference in organ and tissue transplants. It is especially difficult to find a matching donor for people with a very direct 'hybrid' heritage like this kid, since generally speaking you will have to find a donor of the same heritage to find a match.
- ericab819, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is news. This family needs help. I can't believe people are complaining that posts like this will clog up some blog community. Who cares? I say that they need all the exposure that they can get, and that this post deserves a chance on this forum.
good luck to harrison's family. I hope you find a match quickly! I live in Oakland, and will think of you guys everytime I pass CHO. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+8I hope you can find a donor for your cousin. COme on people!. Let's all work together to give little Harrison a real chance at life.
- ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4These diggers have absolutely no ***** clue what they're doing. This isn't like some organ transplant where there's a giant waiting list to get accepted. This is something rare that needs real public exposure to work. Some random person has to see this and say "I can do this". If the article gets trashed, that's that much less of a chance of that random person seeing it and showing up.
In summation: ***** you. - ringo380, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4FreakTrap, that's exactly the mindset that's getting this story buried. This isn't an everyday thing, or like somebody on a waitinglist trying to get ahead in the line. This is a rare occurance that requires mass exposure to function.
- Coffeedemon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5genetics?
- superyounan1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6i hope they find a donor. If i was a match, i would volunteer
- XLmedia, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Thank you
- markman07, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7Time to unbury
- ProfChaosOmega, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6guys, its an expression. im not literally sending my heart.
- Alison999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it isn't, but maybe that's the point, if ppl get tested then more ppl can be saved. unless u r evil.
- chamel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1kevin45
How do you sleep at night. You are the very definition of total looser. - twiztedambience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually your comment was pointless since anybody with a brain in his/her head could have figured that out. This response is pointless too.
It looks like the only thing with a point then about all of this is saving the life of someone who could die without some help... hmm.. - twiztedambience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Let us know if you could help with a donation. If so I will be the first to promote your reply to this situation. Keep the awareness going, and lets try and get some good, proactive info/ideas into Digg.
- Himself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's not balanced. Internal contradiction is not beneficial. You have a disordered soul. You need to receive a large donation of love. Good luck with that.
- Himself, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its being marked as spam by those steeped in "the culture of death". They believe life is without value. Relativism run wild. These are the same people fine with children slaughtered in abortion clinics in the name of license, and the same people uninterested that "contraception" chemicals primarily act as abortifacients.
- DrumsNWhistles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Spam is Viagra and porn sites. Trying to get the word out about a story reported on the mainstream news and submitted to the HEALTH category of digg is not spam. This site has become pathetic.
- twiztedambience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1you are very insensitive, especially given the fact that I don't even see SPAM written, or written that many times, on most real spam pages which try and sell a product.
I'd love to see you write SPAM all over the digg of a playstation 3 enthusiest's post of an article talking about a "sneak preview" of a new game since never see that done on things like that. Instead you chose to do that for someone who could lose a loved one if there is no donor. - twiztedambience, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I agree with ringo.
But why not take that further?
Why not let things like this into digg? Digg has already shown the tendency to create new categories if postings become popular. Why not make "help make a difference in the world" type things a seperate category? It would also be a great way to pressure this website raking in great revenue on ads into doing community service.
Ads are one thing -- they profit someone. Pleas to live are another thing. - ExSlashdotter, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5They're saying it because its not a news story per se. Its somebody posting to get attention (in the fashion of the guy yesterday going to quit his job).
I can see where they're coming from on that, but still... who can say no to a 2yr old with cancer - sachuanu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with pretty much anyone supporting Harrison - and i have a reason to...He is apparently the son of my cousin's cousin-in-law and her husband...Please help him if you can...if you can't then I'm sure you have something better to do (hrmhrm "Kevin45" *cough*) than sit around hoping that a helpless 2-year-old child dies of leukemia. Kevin45, if you really like having people die like that why don't you go join the Al-Qaeda?
- arunforce, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Wait are you saying your half filp/half white? Or are you saying, if you were half-filp, half white?
- Jrr6415sun, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3yea, it's also not funny cause the joke has been used sooo many times.
- frequenicity, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1TY Rob.
Hopefully something that will be made easier with the advancing of stem cell research. -
