- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -1/+15I lost 25 lbs in 4-5 months when I first started taking adderall
appetite suppressants FTW - FlyingCaveman, on 01/07/2009, -0/+12I thought this was going to be another one of those cocaine studies.
- newms32, on 01/07/2009, -0/+11Did you read the article, or even the description? The point of this is to reduce appetite, not to let people eat too much food and stay skinny.
- enantiodromia, on 01/07/2009, -0/+10did you understand the article? this drug interaction keeps you from eating too much. it removes the desire to keep eating after you are "done".
that's exactly the kind of pill you should want, because it means people are eating less.
this is not an "eat all you want" drug, this is a "all you want is just enough food" drug. - BeShirtHappy, on 01/07/2009, -3/+12I seriously doubt there will ever be a "pill" you can take that will cause you to lose weight... without there being some serious side effect. Unfortunately, diet and exercise really is the only way (other than surgery).
- roosterjm2k2, on 01/07/2009, -0/+8What people forget so easily is that most people don't need a pill to "get rid of the weight".
They need a pill to get rid of the addiction. Food addiction in overweight people rated between alcoholism and heroin addiction. Studying brain patterns in scans, they can measure dopamine response to addiction (dopamine being the chemical that creates addiction). The studies show just how harsh the addiction can be. Add to that the way that dopamine works, in that the more you get, the less sensitive you become to it and the more you need of it, and you have a feedback effect.
The problem lies in the fact that you have to eat to live. How successful would an alcoholic be at curing himself if he were required to drink a little every day. Or a heroin addict who was required to hit a little every day. We have to eat every day... telling an overeater to only eat a little is like telling an alcoholic to only have one shot...
Now, exercise has the wonderful ability to actually increase dopamine reception... counteracting the addiction. It's why excersize is a part of the AA method, and a part of any rehab clinic for drug use. However, once you get to a certain size, exercise is painful. Try running with a gut, doing a pushup with a 300 lb body... etc. Not that it's impossible, but it's harder.
I'm fat. I weigh 350lbs. I blame nobody or nothing other than myself for it. Genetics played a part, but I fed the machine. Some people metabolize better, but that doesn't mean that I get to blame that because I have no delusions of not being responsible for where I'm at. I don't want a magic pill. However, I recently was put on adderall for ADD issues and guess what... I'm losing weight. Not because Its magically burning off the weight, but because for the first time in years, a third of what normally satiates my appetite is making me full. Even looking at food doesn't have the same effect. I can make a small plate of food now without thinking about it, and without feeling the urge to overflow the plate. I can look at a half-eaten plate and say "ok, im done" and have no more desire to finish the plate.
Put that together with the exercise that I do (Walking, swiming, sauna, etc) and the weight is coming down. Not fast like a crash diet, but steady and healthily.
It's easy for someone who's never been fat to judge others. I don't blame you. I used to do the same with cigarette smokers, ridiculing them for being weak and unable to keep a cigarette out of their mouth. When you understand the chemistry of addiction, though, you understand that while smokers and fat guys like me are equally responsible for getting where they are, the addiction is something that you can't dismiss as a simple "weakness". If you smoke, replace the "urge" you have to smoke with the urge to eat. Just imagine that every time you want a cigarette, you wanted a snack... but you wanted one high in fats and calories (those are linked to the most dopamine release). How long do you think you could keep your figure? Smokers will stand out in the snow/rain/sleet/hail/heat to get their fix. Overeaters will do the same... we just don't have to. It's easier to keep snacks nearby... and much easier to do it unnoticed, since there is a certain level of shame in it.
Being in the state I am now, I'm embarrassed at the things I did to sneak food past family/friends so nobody knew how much I was eating. I would eat late at night, and almost by crying that I was doing it - WHILE I was doing it, but the need to do it was so strong it overwhelmed the logical part of my brain that knew I shouldn't be doing it.
Moral of story... It's our fault for being fat, but looking for ways to help satiate the addiction to overeating is far from "taking the lazy way out" as some are looking at it. If there was a pill to cure any other addiction, would you be so callous about it? - WordsnCollision, on 01/06/2009, -1/+8Fat as a house... close enough?
- urbandistrict, on 01/07/2009, -1/+8We've had research on this subject for years. It's called Project: Amy Winehouse.

- newms32, on 01/07/2009, -2/+7"Synthetic meth"? lol
- newms32, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5Okay, what are the biological reasons for it to be impossible? There are no laws that say every drug must have an equal and opposite side effect. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people who are betting millions that you're wrong.
- rkuel, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5I think we should address the underlying problem of how these mice got so fat in the first place.
</sarcasm> - AmyVernon, on 01/06/2009, -1/+5@jenocide - I couldn't help it; I lol'd
- roosterjm2k2, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4It's amphetamine salts. Note its not "methamphetamine salts" ... I know this might be challenging, but when you take the "meth" out of "methamphetamine", it's no longer "meth" ...
And its generally prescribed for valid reasons. I take it for ADD... Add to that it's better than ther other options because it doesn't "dull" you like most of them do, it just allows you to focus when you need to... you can still zone out and let your mind run when you want, it's just easier to reign it in... - holeepenguinpee, on 01/07/2009, -1/+5"The primary risk of the ECA stack is in the effect of ephedrine on the heart. Ephedrine has been linked to deaths in people with valve damage, heart problems and heart disease, but also in previously healthy young adults when taken in high doses. It is not recommended that stimulants be taken in users with a pre-existing heart condition. Additionally, there is some evidence that the long term use of amphetamines can lead to heart damage, but this has not been shown for ephedrine use." wikipedia
Yeah great idea. - Harbinger67, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4...marijuana is an appetite stimulant.
- sjmulder, on 01/07/2009, -1/+5I too, exhaled slightly more uncontrolled.
- pak314, on 01/07/2009, -1/+5this drug will reduce their appetite in the first place so there is more food to give away to places where people are starving.
- elister, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Yeah it mostly revolves around the fact that, if you have a bad heart or known heart condition, dont take this *****. Hell you shouldn't even drink coffee, smoke tobacco, etc, etc.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -2/+5My doc gave me some anti-depressant pill or something because of the side effect that it makes you not want to eat. The downside, it makes you not want to eat or have sex or do really anything. I mean I lost 50 lbs in 3 months and I didn't do anything special, I just stopped eating. Just didn't eat. Except carrots, celery, water, and 35 cal bread. Everyday with a vitamin pill, had only 200 calories a day and jogged 2 1/2 miles 6 days a week. Sure I couldn't sleep, sometimes fainted, cramping, constipation, and dreamed about food all the time, but damnit, it worked. And my food bill was super cheap.
- gsgdiggs, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4I got to say I am there with @AmyVernon this comment made me chuckle man!
- psykiv, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Another vote for Ephedrine.
Thanks to the ECA stack, diet, and ridiculous amounts of exercise i lost over 120lbs in less than 8 months.
There was actually a two week period during the beginning when I really started to take Ephedrine when I lost 20 lbs in two weeks!
Too bad the last 30 lbs I've lost have come off super ***** slow. The first 90 came off like in 4 months. The last 30 have been the other 4 :( And I'm already at the point in my exercises that if the weather is decent enough, I don't even sweat after a four mile run :( - Zephik, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4NOT marijuana, thats for damn sure. You'll also go broke from buying poptarts all the time. That or Taco Bell. Taco Bell is munchies heaven.
- sjmulder, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4I skimmed over the article, and you were right. Sorry.
- sobri, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3The alcohol's to help with the anxiety. See, it's a balanced diet.
- zip000, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Taco Bell used to have this extra large nacho platter that was meant for 2 people...oh I loved that when I was...er...in college.
- spokenkaraoke, on 01/07/2009, -2/+4adderall is very effective, i really know someone who is ADD who takes it, skinny like ruby on rails.
- enantiodromia, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2@holee
people have been taking Ephedrine for at least 10,000 years. it wasn't until high school football players started abusing it and dying did it get a bad name. - sgtbutterscotch, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2This would be great news for anyone if they were a fat mouse.
- bmystry, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2I really doubt fat people are running around punching poor people for their noodles and beans.
- soulonfire928, on 01/07/2009, -2/+4Yeah that's healthy. You know you're only supposed to lose 1-2 pounds a week? Why the ***** would your doctor prescribe something that would cause such a drastic reaction solely for weight loss? From what I gather, it wasn't cause you were depressed (since you aren't even clearly sure of what the hell you were taking). Exercise and eating right people-dropping weight that quick almost always leads to putting what you lost back on, plus some.
Sounds like an irresponsible doctor/complete ***** if you ask me. - Ne007, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2And to just think...this is only 10 years away...I'm soooo excited.
- Navicerts, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2"So, by that logic, if a no drug alternative to fighting cancer were discovered the drugs would automatically become a bad thing?"
Pretty much IMO. Don't get me wrong to each his own I think all drugs should be legalized.
However, if I had two options 1 with no drugs to solve a problem and no side effects and 2 the use of drugs with side effects it seems like a pretty easy choice to me. Both options get me where I want to be and one of them has negative side effects. I realize I am not in the majority on my opinion here perhaps it is because I witnessed all the drugs they put my grandmother on before she died. Although the drugs may have extended her life the quality of life went downhill because of the balancing act that was going on with medications.
I don't even take asprin for a head ache and I distrust doctors in general because of past experiences with misdiagnoses (regarding my own health) in which I was given medications with side effects that did not help me at all (more than once!). In addition I was actually infected with hep C AT the hospital BY doctors when I had a blood transfusion. The medical industry is far from flawless.
So you see to me taking any sort of medication has a large risk factor as I don't have the chemical and biological knowledge to understand the full effect of the drugs myself.
Granted I have never had a problem with weighing too much perhaps the challenge of loosing weight would be enough for me to deal with those side effects but I would like to think I could solve the problem by a more natural means. Who knows....
In any case, yes - I'm tainted. - elister, on 01/07/2009, -1/+3Ephedrine, specifically the ECA Stack, a combination of Ephedrine, Caffeine and Aspirin. If your young, 150lbs over weight, understand the basics of diet and exercise. It will spike your metabolism and you'll lose weight fast.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ECA_stack - TheMachine1, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2I was reading a study where people who get all their protein from wheat are likely lysine deficient and such deficiency could increase anxiety.
- soulonfire928, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Well of course you can. But you shouldn't.
- Jacare, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2practically every stimulant suppresses appetite.
- FLarsen, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Drugs that fight cancer?! What a new an novel idea!
There is ten's of thousands of years of evolution that contribute to proper cell division given a healthy life style. Anything else is just trying to manually manipulate something that is far too complex to comprehend (i.e. it will have a down side). - nowhereelse, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2So that's why those Buddha idols are always fat!
- AaronS2000, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2*idle, this isn't a singing contest.

- diggdong, on 01/07/2009, -3/+4I lost 358lbs eating mice for a whole year. Works great. Now I know why they use them to test drugs. Strange side effect, though, I ***** cheese.
