- Mummo, on 04/08/2009, -1/+20Drinking coffee and not working out completely eliminates muscle pain
- HeDiggMe, on 04/08/2009, -0/+17I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in the world who doesn't like coffee.
- BrettFromTibet, on 04/08/2009, -2/+12I would rather skip the jitter and have a couple beers after, thanks...
- internetisscary, on 04/08/2009, -1/+10i always need a cup of coffe to have enough energy to work out anyway, so this is perfect.
- StevieJanowski, on 04/08/2009, -1/+10Coffee, check. Workout, uhh maybe tomorrow
- arandia, on 04/08/2009, -1/+10I usually have a cup of coffee an hour before a run.
- inactive, on 04/08/2009, -1/+8Drinking coffee for me would lead to squirts and sharting problems.
- smindsrt, on 04/08/2009, -0/+7I'm not a *big* coffee drinker but if it makes me feel a little better after a workout then I'm going to give it a try.
- Javarrito, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7so........ rexxhunt
do you usually just randomly accuse people of making ***** up
Seriously, though, look it up. Caffeine is a diuretic. Which, in laymen terms, means "***** dehydrates you." - quomen, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6Caffeine and most stimulants aren't very good before running because they dehydrate you. They work well when lifting, but you best abstain from it during endurance runs.
- numberneal, on 04/08/2009, -0/+6well milk alone can do the same thing based on the proportionately equal protein and carb count.
- popzero, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6Yeah, I feel the same way. Hey, wait a minute... There's two of us?
- andyboyd, on 04/08/2009, -2/+7Wonder how coffee after the gym affects muscles? Who am I kidding anyway? I've never been to the gym!
- 41k1d0k4, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4Smoking weed before working out may lessen the likelihood a workout will happen.
- Nboy514, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4Welcome to the internets.
- schnikies79, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4This is dumb.
First off, caffeine dehydrates, so if you run like I do you know not to drink it. Second, muscle soreness isn't a bad thing. - CB810, on 04/08/2009, -2/+6Count me in. I'll down a latte before hitting the gym
- BlackJackJester, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4I haven't seen this before, so I'm glad it made it to the front page. again.
- MEatRHIT, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4I wouldn't recommend that, glutamine supplements help restore the amino acid (glutamine) your body uses to repair damaged muscles... assuming you are working out hard enough to deplete your body's natural reserve.
What the caffeine is doing is just blocking the one of the chemicals that causes the inflammation thus reducing the pain you feel. But, your body still needs to use amino acids to repair the damage you did by lifting hard. - Jeepinator, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4Coffee before a workout is not a good idea. Maybe your muscles hurt less, but that's because you crashed in the middle of the workout and significantly lowered your effort. Drinking large amounts of caffeine before something like a long run will ruin your run. It dehydrates you and doesn't provide real energy.
- BlackJackJester, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3I'm not a personal trainer or anything...but I'm pretty sure that the soreness is a byproduct of lactic acid buildup in the muscles from using them a lot. If you do certain exercises a lot, the muscles build a tolerance, hence why the worst soreness only tends to occur after doing workouts you don't do on a regular basis.
The 'burn' is the muscle fibers breaking - which then rebuild stronger over a period of about 48 hours. - BlackJackJester, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3I can see how a lot of people don't life coffee. The stuff you get at starbucks, or pretty much any retail chain barely qualifies, as it is usually burnt to ***** and old as hell.
If you're willing to pay a premium, you can get fresh beans, lightly roasted, and make a cup so good it fights crime. Anything 'dark roast' is basically another word for 'burnt'. So if you like burnt toast, maybe you'll like burnt coffee. - MEatRHIT, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3From your own article:
"Although these findings seem not to have a clinical importance in healthy volunteers, they may raise safety questions in patients with reduced coronary flow reserve, as seen in coronary artery disease, particularly before physical exercise and at high-altitude exposure," the researchers wrote.
Eat that ZMann - quomen, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3I can tell that most of the people commenting don't work out.
- rabidsnowman, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4Sample size of 25, Are you serious?
- rundymc, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3Won't be saying that when your back gives out moving the furniture
- quomen, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3Actually, you want a 2:1 ratio of carbs to protein in your after workout. Chocolate milk is the perfect recovery drink.
- mycoplasma, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3I'm pretty sure that every time I drink coffee before working out I end up getting nauseous.
- schnikies79, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3Naa, I agree 100%
Coffee taste like twice-boiled donkey ass. - swagv, on 04/08/2009, -6/+9How many versions of this on digg do we honestly need?:

http://digg.com/health/Coffee_Lessens_the_Pain_of_ ... - MEatRHIT, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2You do realize that caffeine has a half life of a couple of hours right? I shouldn't use wiki as a source but: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caffeine#Metabolism_a ...
- yerdaddy, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2That's because the ones that do know this is ***** and aren't bothering.
- BlackJackJester, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2This guy speaks lots of truth. Black coffee has only a couple of calories. Caffeine addiction is merely physical, and amounts to tiredness and maybe a headache, depending on severity. You can be clean within a week or two cold turkey, and nothing an advil can't take care of.
2 cups in the morning won't lead to an addiction, and also shouldn't mess with sleep patterns (half life of caffeine is I believe 6 hours). - alclone, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Gonna have to disagree with this:
1. The number of calories inside typical black coffee or coffee mixed with fat free milk is -45 and 20 respectively. The metabolism from the caffeine would speed it to -50 calories. Coffee itself has 5 calories... meaning its negligible.
2. Damaging muscle tissue is how muscles are built. Furthermore, people don't typically exert themselves that much and they will maximize exertion with the hyperactivity that coffee causes. Caffeine isn't a painkiller, so people will not increase exertion.
3. Sleep is definitely important, I agree, but that is completely besides the point. - alclone, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Well if people want to burn calories, they'd go with coffee. A cup of milk is at least 70 if one is drinking fat free, or 135 if 2%. Black coffee is 5 calories... not factoring in the -50 calories that caffeine causes.
- dazparkour, on 04/09/2009, -1/+3I'd rather skip the running and have a coffee.
- BlackJackJester, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Funny, since caffeine has the same effect on your brain as coke...but about 50x less potent ;).
- rundymc, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1One cup of coffee won't dehydrate you, not enough caffeine in it.
As to your other point, why is it acceptable to be dehydrated while weight training? - capnawesome, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2Awesome. Keep 'em coming Digg...I love these coffee-addiction justifications.
- Superdude22, on 04/09/2009, -1/+2how do you know what that tastes like? And, since I like coffee...umm does that mean I should give your suggestion a taste? Oh and how do I add cream and sugar?
- ZMann, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1and I just read about a study suggesting that you should NOT have caffeine before exercise because it limits blood flow to the heart!
"Caffeine Limits Blood Flow To Heart Muscle During Exercise"

- quomen, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1You constantly have a water bottle next to you replenish your fluids.
- Jeepinator, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1BlackJack is correct. You hurt from breaking down your muscles not from rebuilding them.
- rdldr1, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1Wow, I'll give this a try. Save some money by not buying glutamine.
- agentinfinite, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1add cream and sugar with a butter knife
