- homer524, on 11/05/2009, -1/+14I foresee a second wave of panic, but the Third Wave is when the invasion begins.
- EMFK, on 11/04/2009, -8/+20Dr. Frenk's presentation is sobering and perhaps, will get me motivated to get the H1N1 shot.
- LongShlong, on 11/05/2009, -6/+15Quick, Big-Pharma! Make and SELL us more flu oinkment!
Make sure you do it EVERY year after that!
***** the flu, you pansies... Take Vitamin D. I had the flu for less than 12 hours before I realized wrestling hurricanes, power-bombing Jesus and ripping phone books in half with my eyelids was a better use of my time. - bizzywho, on 11/05/2009, -4/+12Second wave? So there was a first wave? All I saw was another flu season...
Let's get serious though. We're not gonna see military scientists in white hazmat suits putting people in isolation tents throughout the city.
Remember:
2001 - West Nile Virus
2003 - SARS
2006 - Bird Flu
2008 - Swine Flu - Frankzulla, on 11/05/2009, -1/+9That means more opportunities to use swine flu as an excuse to stay home. Excellence.
- tryptonaut, on 11/05/2009, -8/+15Quick! Everbody panic! Feed into the government fear propaganda!
- shayben, on 11/05/2009, -1/+7Funny how the next headline in digg's front page is this:
http://digg.com/general_sciences/10_Failed_Doomsda ... - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/05/2009, -1/+6His point was that every couple of years there is some new hysteria over some disease or other, but it never actually seems to end up being of serious concern.
Swine Flu appears to fall right in line with that pattern. - pygmy, on 11/05/2009, -1/+6NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
- lewystud, on 11/05/2009, -1/+6sky is falling
- Alchemic, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5What credibility does this guy have? Look up his career he is more of a politician than a doctor? Why buy into this *****?
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/05/2009, -2/+7Sucker.
- elliotys, on 11/05/2009, -3/+8The vitamin industry is twice as ***** as big-pharma.
- Peggles, on 11/05/2009, -2/+6Every case of flu in Nova Scotia has been the H1N1 strain.

I have it. Feels a lot like the regular flu to me except I had a pretty high fever for the first few days after catching it. The worst part is being stuck at home. It's not nearly as bad as the media is scaring us into believing, unless you have an underlying medical condition. - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5How about this?
***** vitamins. ***** flu vaccines if you are not a child, old, or pregnant.
Eat some fruit. Drink some water. Get some sleep, and get on with your life. - LilJimmyNordin, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Dr. Frenk also mentioned that the second wave would be far more dangerous, directly targeting the human GLAYYYYVEN
- Alchemic, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4It is good to see that some people still have a memory.
- jayjayjoni, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Rage Virus is more deadly than Swine Flu.
- tgc1, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3SHUT DOWN EVERYTHING!
- pygmy, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Quick, tell Egypt to kill all the pigs in the country just in case the swine fl-
oh wait... - blqysmg, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3H1N1 is not as lethal as the regular flu. In fact, more people have died from simple falls than from the H1N1 virus. I'm sorry, but it's just not that bad. He says that MOST PEOPLE have moderate symptoms. Unless you are already compromised by an auto-immune disease, you will feel bad for 10 days then get over it. Then you'll have the anti-bodies to fight it off for life.
- jsffive, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3And directly under this article on the Digg page is "10 Failed Doomsday Predictions"...
Coincidence? - SpeedSteamBoat, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Dr. SpeedSteamBoat foresees dozens of waves of swine flu. It will strike constantly but particularly during the change of the seasons, like some type of flu-like disease. It will give many fevers and take few lives. People will forget that they were supposed to worry about it at one point, and it will become ENDEMIC in the global populace!
/spOOoooOoooOoky voice - tama00, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2╰▄━▄╯YEAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!
- maxtangent, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Isn't it odd that Obama declared a National Emergency over a virus that kills fewer people than the seasonal flu?
FAR more people are slaughtered on highways, yet that isn't enough to declare a National Emergency. - kemp34, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Lupus is a national emergency!
- Shadouness, on 11/05/2009, -4/+5More opportunities to use it as an excuse to have people getting the shots.
More reason for people to fear. - TrevorBradley, on 11/05/2009, -1/+2I have an autoimmune disorder and am taking the same prescription pills they give to transplant patients to slow down their immune systems so that they don't reject their new organs.
I love you back! - Niacin, on 11/05/2009, -3/+4I hope H1N1 kills all you inferior mammals to make room for those of us that have an actual immune system. Stop washing your hands like an anal-retentive germaphobe, put down the sanitary carrot-sticks and improve the genepool.
Or play on the 3rd rail. - abt5000, on 11/05/2009, -1/+2So he is predicting we will have another flu season, like we do every year?
- Benoldays, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1i cant believe you guys are still going on about piggy flu, New Zealand was one of the first countries to get "infected" due to a unfortunately timed school trip to Mexico.
the media made a big hoopla out of it for a month or so then it died down to the fear mongering ***** that it is.
didnt stop the sale of millions of doses of tamyflu to stupid people at $70 NZD (about $50 USD) a pop though, most of which was never used and has a limited shelf life.
clear winner = drug company - MaxxusFlamus, on 11/05/2009, -2/+3first wave of H1N1 was this past spring.
Bird Flu is very very different from Swine Flu. Let's not mix these up.
H5N1 (Bird Flu) Can kill very effectively. More than 50% of the cases result in death.
It just so happens that in most cases, something that is deadly isn't likely to spread as rapidly as the flu. Something that spreads rapidly- isn't as likely to be deadly.
On a case by case basis- H1N1, not a huge deal. There are several instances of healthy young people requiring immediate hospitalization/death and it's again- a case by case basis.
It IS a concern though from the standpoint of the medical community though. New viruses- regardless of how benign they seem- is always a cause for concern. - TwwIX, on 11/05/2009, -2/+2Pfft! Nothing can penetrate my tin foil body suit.
- RK5000, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1How about a movie about Swine Flu with Harrison Ford cast as Dr. Frenk. Drama-thriller? Kidnapping? An ordinary doctor in extraordinary circumstances . . .
- Foodeater133, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1If its anything like it's supposed to be it will come in several waves (like the spanish influenza) with the last one being the most deadly mainly because the people with healthy immune systems who don't catch it now will catch it later when everyone who has caught it now has developped a viral immunity of sorts is my guess.
At least thats what we have to hope anyway. I don't really have an opinion one way or another. A vaccine is going to be harmless to take, just a weakened virus. If I get the chance to get a vaccine I'll take it, if not who cares we just have to keep living life.
Hint: By caring enough you let the government win in it's war of potential distractions that nobody even gives a ***** about anyway.
By caring about this we would fail to notice the fact that swine flu is very contageous and a lot of people will have swine flu after the vaccine so we will all catch it then because there is already a shortage in vaccines so not everybody can get them. When the last wave hits and we haven't had the artificial support the first wave exposees have had than our body will struggle to make the antibodies whereas theirs will work more easily and their odds of success while having said disease improve.
Who is the target audience for the real swine flu? The people too poor to be able to afford the shot given to the rich. It is another approach by the government where this time YOU are the enemy simply because of a poverty stereotype. What is the quickest way to generate a majority of followers? Eliminate the people who oppose. Who opposes? People who are anti prohibition and believe in freedom.
We the people. - mverta, on 11/05/2009, -2/+2Get out of the pool. Nature has selected you for extinction. Kisses.
- MixMastaKooz, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1What if the government/news media/health care industry didn't try to educate the populace or take preventative measures for possible outbreaks? We'd have their heads on a stick yelling, "Why didn't you do anything?!?!" I'd rather these groups engage the public (the spread of any disease can be prevented/slowed down by changing people's behavior like washing hands, covering mouths, using condoms (HIV), etc.) than have their thumbs up their collective asses. Anyhow, the history of another h1n1 virus, the Spanish Flu, suggests we should expect mild spread/symptoms followed by a lull, then it spreads/kills with a fury. I'm personally glad the government/news media/HCI is being pro-active.
- TrevorBradley, on 11/05/2009, -3/+3I'm in the high risk group here in Canada and got my shot last week. Things are getting a bit brutal out here in British Columbia, with the number of infected doubling since last week.
How bad the infection and mortality rates are going to be, it's not going to be possible to say until the end of the flu season. Compare the few deaths for H1N1 so far to regular flu (fallaciously) if you wish, but regular flu doesn't really start up until December.
BC is well into it's second wave.. but there are other places in the world where things are looking "Mexico bad"... Try doing a google news search for "Ukraine flu". - dawnraid101, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1Frenk or Frink 0_o
- Slackersrule, on 11/05/2009, -2/+2Swine flu gave me AIDS.
- Thumper13, on 11/05/2009, -5/+5OMG I am sooooo scared! My friend just had it, and he was sick for 4 WHOLE days!!!!!!
I'm gonna get 5 shots so I am super protected. - RagingReid, on 11/05/2009, -1/+1I'm still waiting for the Second Wave of Bird Flu, not to mention the Third Wave of Monkey Flu and the Fourth Wave of Possum Flu.
- TrevorBradley, on 11/05/2009, -2/+1The reason why the first wave(s) are so ineffective is that the virus needs time to evolve and adapt to its new environment. It still has too many swine and avian genes to be too destructive.
Now does that actually mean it *will* change into something as deadly (or a fraction as deadly) as 1918? Who knows... Best not to panic, but take the precaution and vaccinate the population in an expedient but orderly fashion. We need to be prepared for when the next 1918 comes around.
