- sergeantmudd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21I knew this anoxeric chick. What finally got her to stop was hearing a speech saying anoxeria destroys your metabolism so in the future, you're even worse off than before, that you are actually making it harder to stay thin. I always found it funny that her body-image derived fear broke her anoxeria.
- 1807, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Ya know, it used to be that eating disorders were more common amongst women but lately, as a male college student, I see more and more guys taking interest in their physical appearance. I see guys who show signs of eating disorders but claim they're losing weight for a sport or slimming down for the summer. It's not just a girls problem anymore.
- dinorama1234, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11While eating disorders are manifestly about weight and body image, they are also about anger and control (eg I can control what I do or do not put into my body, I can show my anger and pain by slowly hurting myself and making you watch). I also read once that anorexia was a slow form of suicide, in which the afflicted person slowly makes his or herself smaller and smaller until they simply disappear.
- TheBlackNinja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I really hate it when girls think being thin is being pretty, I really do not want to kiss or do anything with/to a skeleton with skin on it.
- Hawker400, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I think it's funny that this story is about anorexia and bulimia - yet all of the Adsense links on the right side of the page are for diet sites like Jenny Craig and "I lost 40 pounds in 2 months" type sites.
- nagumi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9yes, but the 16 percent of obese teens don't generally die within 20 years.
20% of people diagnosed with anorexia nervosa will die from complications within 20 years. 50% will recover. The other 30% live in a limbo of disease and health. Anorexia is also on the rise - in fact, with 50% of US 11 year old girls claiming they're on a diet, it's rising FAST. Not to mention that the 1% figure is for people with a current diagnosis. Many of the girls never get diagnosed - they just die. Anorexia, as a mental illness, has a higher mortality rate than any other mental illness, including major chronic depression. More anorexics die of anorexia than chronic depressives of suicide.
On the other hand, obese individuals, although they do major damage to themselves, have much more time to repair the damage and to reverse their behaviors. Although obesity is far, far more common, anorexia is more dangerous in both the short and long term.
I was anorexic for three years. Now, I have a peripheral and autonomic polyneuropathy (nerve damage causing me to lose sensation in my extremities and be dizzy ALL the damn time), hyperinsulinemia (too much insulin resulting in low low blood sugar - think reverse diabetes), glycogen depletion (resulting in extreme weakness 24/7 to the point of almost needing a walker), osteoporosis, a weak heart and probably more stuff the doctors haven't found yet. I've shortened my lifespan by decades with three ***** years of bad eating. Not only that, but I'll be like this till I die. It's all chronic If I'd been morbidly obese but then lost weight I'd have issues, sure, and diabetes, sure, but just like my grandma who recently died of diabetes complications due to her obesity at the ripe old age of 82, I'd probably have an OK life.
I wish I'd been an overeater. Then, I'd have a second chance. Instead, I can barely walk. - elsalgo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11I wish. I'd be the healthiest human on the planet.
- dinorama1234, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8You make it sound like people with eating disorders simply need to look at the food pyramid. These disorders have psychotic components. Namely, body dysmorphia, in which the afflicted persons cannot see themselves or their bodies in a realistic way. It doesn't matter how thin they might be, they still see themselves as being too big. It is fundamentally irrational, so a good pep talk, education about food and exercise, etc. won't work. Period. These conditions are called illnesses for a reason. Self-righteous minimalization isn't the answer...not for this...not for anything.
- digirat, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Bulimia. Twice the taste - no calories.
- nagumi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Nuh uh.

Naomi, in Jewish Israel ;) - TheGilmanator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6That's so incredibly wrong that I have no choice but to digg you up.
- azurechaos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yeah and virtually put your body in emergency + panic mode so that it starts eating itself.
- nagumi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Exactly right. The AMA in fact has been talking a lot about this. Eating disorders, mostly anorexia and an exercise disorder in which the male feels "puny" and so overexercises to the point of, well, hugeness and it it becomes the focus of their lives. They even see a weakling in the mirror.
- nagumi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Same here. Recovering from anorexia. That ad creeped the hell out of me... I'm glad they're paying attention to the issue but I'm even more glad I don't have to see that on the screen here in Israel. It'd ruin the whole movie for me.
- VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Don't die for a diet? Calling anorexia and bulemia "diets" gives them too much credit.
- Hawker400, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10but if the opportunity presented itself, you wouldn't turn it down
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Er... well.. your body does gather nutrients from the sun in a fashion. Vitamin D if I recall correctly? Been awhile since high school... or since I was out in the sun :p
- davodavo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you don't believe this, look at the women in classical Greek and Roman paintings and statues, or paintings from the Middle Ages. They're much fuller figured (and more attractive IMO). The ideals of beauty are the opposite of what's easy to achieve; back then and up through the middle ages, food wasn't as easy to come by compared to today. Voluptuous women with wide hips were the ideal - it represented an abundance of food (again, hard to come by) and wealth, and showed that a woman was suited for childbirth (the more children a woman could have, the more desirable she was).
- Dustin00, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Dieting sucks! Exercise more!
- sarahb459, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I think the proper term is manorexia...
- hiPpymIck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://eatingdisorders.about.com/od/eatingdisordersinmales/Eating_Disorders_in_Males.htm
- LowRentDiggs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Exactly, eating good food and exercising will keep you at a normal weight. Cut out added sugars and white starches if you need to lose weight. It'll make you feel better also.
- skyfire1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Then one day a guy thought of a way to have sex with raising brats. They call it the condom.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Over the course of human history there was never enough food for everyone and people had to actually struggle for it. In the last century or so there is a pretty sad phenomenon of people having too much to eat or avoid eating for cosmetic reasons which actually lead to even greater problems than before. I have to admit that humanity never ceases to amaze me on how it actually creates problems so that have something to deal with. I bet than when we figure a way to have no poor people around, some people would start to suffer for being too rich or over-neglecting their riches for social reasons, oh the humanity .....
- raymore, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah that video ad bothers me. It almost makes me sad. I mean wtf, how, why? The human brain is so ***** in depth and complicated, more than we will ever know.
- BlackCow, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You gain weight in the winter and lose it in the summer. Welcome to the club. At least its consistent.
- saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Alcohol IS sugar, in terms of what it does in your system, you know.
- BESTenemy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Allow me to quote my favourite comedian on the subject:
...
Am I the only one here who is tired of listening to these pretentious girls calling it a disease?
It's a DECISION, not a DISEASE! Cancer is a disease. Parkinson's is a disease. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease. Leprosy is a disease. Polio is a disease, etc... If anything, it is a sickness at best.
What kind of ***** up values does someone have when they eat a meal and then puke it up intentionally? Or someone who just simply doesn't want to eat. There people starving everyday who would give anything for a decent meal. However, some snobby ***** only thinking of herself couldn't care less. Purging on food to vomit up an hour later.
Normal people enjoy eating... I have no sympathy for them. Don't eat; I don't give 2 *****... pass the gravy bitch!"
"I don't want to eat!"
"Go ***** yourself. Why don't you go lie down under a train, right after you don't eat."
- George Carlin
...
My friend's suggestion was to have an exchange program. Ship annorexic girls to the third world and get some starving kids back here instead, that can appreciate a decent meal. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3There are many pro anorexia and bulemia websites, and a very funny MSN users group. The "secrect" code word these ***** use is ANNAMIE, tossing it into google will find you some sites that are pure comedy gold.
Everytime one of these idiots starves themselves to death all I see is a victory for evolution. - davodavo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Fathers actually didn't take much part in their children's lives until adolescence anyway. And men wanted children, hence the ideal being women more suited to have several in their lives.
- Coldstreak, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7Really? I thought she could have stood to lose a few pounds
- hichnii, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1Detox diets are on the rise. Walk into a health food store or pharmacy and you’ll be presented with a huge variety of detox kits. Some are designed to cleanse your digestive system or your liver, while others promise weight loss.

http://eatingdisorders.about.com/ - noamsml, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I always thought I should try to market sensible eating, using only water as a thirst quencher, and high-duration, low-intensity cardiovascular exercise as the next fad diet. I wonder whether it would sell.

http://teamglobal.usana.com - Gzero, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I remember something about Atkins being a bad idea but forgot why.
- detoxdiet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There a lot of Americans who are really out there when it comes to dieting. The diet craze has a lot to do with the media hype about top models and movie stars. Everybody wants to look like Britney Spears or Nicole Richie, but that is not possible for all of us. If everyone of us were to concentrate on risking our lives for a diet, then what would the world come to?
Proper and healthy nutrition should be more important than diets. How can we get people to see the seriousness of being healthy and get rid of the hype about being thin? Society is responsible for the dying for a diet concept that anorexia and bulima patients see as being normal. Where did we go wrong. There is nothing wrong with dieting, but doing it appropriately is the key. Don't go overboard.

I don't even think the 50% fully recover. There are still thoughts...constant thoughts. Even if you don't physically go through with anything again.
I battled anorexia for almost three years. It was a control thing, not a "pretty" or "popular" thing. I'm at a healthy weight, but I still have thoughts every day, and I will for the rest of my life.
My least favorite curves happen to be my boyfriend's favorite curves. He helps me a lot. :) - ccherlet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Don't eat fast food.

http://teamglobal.usana.com - zhixiong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Didn't Atkins died obese? Google or wiki his cause of death.
- zhixiong, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The Iron Guru, Vince Gironda once said, Nutrition is 80% success.
- jesirose, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1How is this news?
- Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I hate it when I get some fat on me. I go biking, work out, and eat well until it's gone. Then after a month or two I get lazy and spend more time drinking beer/eating (especially during winter) and get some fat on me again. Oh the vicious cycle...
- hackiavelli, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1It's interesting the kinds of things we worry about as a society.
The Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders group estimates that around 1% of adolescents have an eating disorder. The CDC estimates that 16% of adolescents are obese. The level of concern is completely disproportionate to the level of occurrence. - psbpv3o, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4I don't understand why people can't eat like normal human beings.
Here is an average (my) diet.
Breakfest: A protein, a grain, a fruit (eggs, toast, and an orange)
snack: dairy, fruit (yogurt, berries)
lunch: protein, grain, vegetable (pbj sandwich, carrots, water)
snack: whatever
dinner: grain, protein, veggie (steak, rice or grain bread, broccoli and other mixed veggies)
dessert: ice cream, bananas, whip cream
It's not that hard. The food is good and I feel normal at all times (it's not like a feel like superman, I feel like a normal person should feel, not disgusting and sick). Just workout a little bit, which should be sensible and include a little education as well. But it's not like you have to base you're life on this kind of *****. Just don't be a dumbass and eat a box of cookies while you sit on your ass watching t.v. that you're not even entertained by as you complain that your fat you *****. or starve yourself because you think that your body magically gathers nutrients and gains muscle from the freaking sun. God dammit.
sorry. - IllBeBack, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1You guys are right. Lack of exercise is what is behind the so-called "obesity epidemic".
- dylanrush, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Skinny chicks are hot...
