- fastfood15, on 12/18/2007, -1/+12i was going to really enjoy this article. I mean i thought i was going to revolutionize my life.
but then it didn't have pictures... - pcslugster, on 12/18/2007, -0/+7Someone sit up straight for hours on end. Tell me how your back feels. I just took an Engineering Ergonomics class, and the best thing to do is not sit in the same position for extended periods of time.
- m0rph, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5Or set the handy "Seat Straight" wallpaper:

- bkrishnan, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2Oh great! Now I'm gonna feel self conscious about my posture till I forget this article!
- PFinn, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2dugg for the really lame joke at the end of the article
- Inox555, on 12/18/2007, -0/+290 degrees isn't the least stressful seating position...

lol - mrz0mbie, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2Alot of those points where exactly what my physio told me. I was there for lower back problems so this is all very good advice. After about six months of taking this advice my back feels ALOT better so its definately worth taking note of these points.
- stonebear, on 12/18/2007, -1/+3Are you doing everything you can with what you have? Might want to consider that before throwing money at it. If your monitor is on the same surface as your keyboard, so that you look down at it, there's your slouch; especially if you use bifocal, or trifocal, glasses. Make sure your monitor is elevated to eye level so you are forced to sit up straight to look into it. Also, make sure the resolution is not set too high, so that you lean forward without realizing. Desktop real estate is important, but it's better to get a second monitor than keep the resolution too high on one.
- hayseed, on 12/18/2007, -0/+2I recommend looking at the photos before digging this down
- KniteWulf, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1Thanks for that tip. I will surely use this website to correct my "posture"!
- Szat, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1I always stand up correctly, but I always slouch when I'm sitting at my computer. I work in a mail room and I lift boxes all day. This definitely puts strain on my back. In fact, my upper back/shoulders hurt right now!
- Abominous, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1Only time where I slouch is when I drive. I just make a mental note to make sure I can feel the seat on the back of my head.
- hayseed, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1Link not working - please fix, i am a sloucher.
- p51d007, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1I've been in a business where I lift 30-100 pound objects on a daily basis for 26 years.
NOT ONCE have I had a back problem. Why? Well, when I was in my teens, I worked in a television
repair shop. The owner yelled at me one time to NEVER lift with my back. Stuck with me all these
years. Thanks! I've never had a back problem in my life.
My neck on the other hand.....thanks to a car wreck when I was 25 (car flipped, skidded, hit a tree and flipped back over), sounds like I'm cooking popcorn when I twist my neck. - ChadN, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1After hurting my back (while lifting), I did research and picked up one each of these Steelcase chairs (I got the 'Leap' used):
http://www.steelcase.com/na/leap_products.aspx?f=1 ...
http://www.steelcase.com/na/think_products.aspx?f= ...
They are both very nice; I'd suggest the 'Think' since it is light, and cheaper (I got it without armrests, which saved a bundle). The 'Leap' is more adjustable, whereas the 'Think' just mostly conforms. Both bend with your lower back, and let the seat slide forward when you lean back (which is *awesome*).
BTW, I disliked the Herman-Miller Aeron chair. The plastic lip under your leg digs in and was very uncomfortable after awhile. Lots of people like the Humanscale Freedom chairs. The Gel seat was nice, but nothing else impressed me much. Try to sit in as many as you can first. I'm very happy with my investment, FWIW. - MetalLizard, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1What do I do if I have a genetic thoracic kyphosis of 83 degrees?
- jonathannelson, on 12/18/2007, -0/+1oh gosh i need this so bad. i slouch too much when i'm at the computer. does anyone have any recommendations on there favorite type(s) of ergonomic chairs? herman miller has one i really like: http://www.hermanmiller.com/CDA/SSA/Product/1,1592 ...
- hellocn, on 12/18/2007, -0/+0A good article,I will now sit down and keep my back straight.
- MikeFallopian, on 12/18/2007, -0/+0Obligatory grain of salt (slouching wouldn't be so comfortable if it was bad for you): http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/11/06112 ...
- emitind, on 12/18/2007, -3/+3If anyone is having back posture related problems, I would definately recommend the "ShouldersBack" posture correction support. Works a treat... erm have a look at http://www.shoulders-back.com
- reaper59, on 12/18/2007, -0/+0Yea, except the people I'll be saying this to dont even understand english so fat lot of good this will do for their backs.
- MikeFallopian, on 12/18/2007, -0/+0Whoops, link got cut off. Try this, and happy slouching: sciencedaily.com/releases/2006/11/061127112844.htm
- likwidfuzion, on 12/18/2007, -1/+1Don't break your back so you don't become a brokeback?
- saboo1618, on 12/19/2007, -0/+0Love this article. I have had super back and neck pain for months and have thought about going to see a specialist. I just bought one of those foam pillows...super expensive, but well worth it. It's a Temperpedic pillow I believe. Stress, it's inevitable I guess.
- mjenifer, on 12/23/2007, -0/+0Very concise and beautifully written article. I will refer to it often. Thank you!!!
- zrang, on 12/18/2007, -0/+0I'm sitting in one of those now.. They're comfy, sure, but I'd suggest trying them out for yourself and REALLY sit in them and make a list of what to look for rather than sitting for a few seconds and making a hasty decision on a first impression. The Aeron is a nice chair but it won't prevent you from slouching if you really want to slouch, you've got to change your habits to fix that.
- eeevildictator, on 12/18/2007, -3/+2Is that really necessary?
A chair like that may align your body but it is doing the work so you don't have to. Consequently, your back muscles remain weak and won't naturally give you good posture elsewhere. Its more of a band-aid than a solution.
I would recommend that as a measure to be taken only if you have tried and failed to correct your posture already.
It is a choice, not a chair. - bigd063, on 12/18/2007, -3/+1Is it bad I read the title "Don't Break Your Back! Tips to a Healthy Prostitute"?
- thefobbysystm, on 12/18/2007, -3/+0a good article, but they could really use some simple diagrams of what they're talking about. Words describing postures just doesn't do it for me.
- Root94, on 12/18/2007, -6/+0I misread it as Don’t Break Your Back! Tips to Healthy Prostitutes. :]
