- iggybdawg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Yeah, circumcision should totally be an opt in procedure, i.e. not offered unless asked for, and even then the doctors should make sure the parents know stuff like the AAP doesn't recommend it.
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5What's done is done. Let's just let people decide for themselves from now on, okay?
- ZWarren69, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Since becoming an atheist, I have often thought of this. What are the disadvantages, if any, of not being circumsized?
- silencerider151, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Depends on if you're too lazy to clean your penis or not.
If you're not, there's no real disadvantages. - SammyJr, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6What a tragedy.
The parents are just as much to blame as the doctor. While pursuing the foolish ideas of "fitting in while in the locker room" and "looking like daddy", they've probably condemned their son to a sexless existance. - heatherbee, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Oh this is so sad. What's even more awful is that people think these things are just freak accidents that don't happen often...but that's not true. This sort of thing happens often. Men are often 'injured' by circumcision in ways that were unintended. Some lose their glans, some lose too much skin, some suffer urethral damage...sometimes, the whole penis ends up coming off. It's a terrible risk to take. There's always a huge margin of error when you're trying to cut something SO tiny, fragile, and sensitive in a patient that is wide awake, not given anesthesia, and doesn't understand what's going on.
- wolynnger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Babies should be held and loved, not cut on their first days in this world. Did you know that the large majority of circumcisions are done with NO ANESTHESIA?? Imagine what this baby felt who had his glans hacked off, but remember that all circumcised babies are traumatized (regardless of anesthesia administered) as they are strapped down to the "circumstraint" and cut into. Many go into a state of shock, many cry so hard their breathing and heart rates are severely impacted. And then we wonder why they don't nurse well, why their sleep is disturbed, why mother/infant bonding is compromised.....Please spread the word that circumcision of baby boys is torture and must be stopped. There is NO VALID MEDICAL REASON FOR IT!!!!!
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Could someone help me understand how Digg works?
This story now has 30 Diggs. Is there a set number it takes to become "popular"? Are the Diggs offset by Burys which raise the bar for becoming popular? If so, can one see how many Burys there are? Does the age of the story factor into it?
Thanks for any insight. - twolfe26003, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I would like to introduce some comments from http://petition.nomorebris.org - a petition directed to the leadership of the American Reform Judaism movement and it’s rabbinic assocation, to accept alternative Brit Milah (Jewish Circumcision) practices:
“If penis cutting is such a powerful symbol of religious dedication men should elect to undergo the tradition not force it on an infant”
“Jewish American vitality and continuity will be advanced only by education in our European Jewish and Jewish American heritage, not by removal of infant foreskins. Circumcision is anachronistic, sexist, and inconsistent with modern Jewish American belief and values. I support Brit Shalom ceremonies welcoming newborn boys and girls without damage to genitals”
“There are so many elements of tradition which we choose to live without (stoning, gender oppression, etc.). In light of modern evidence about the value of the whole anatomy, and in recognition of basic human rights, perhaps our moral sense can let us adopt a tradition which lets a mature male choose the fate of his own body parts.”
“Imagine a religion where a man was required to act out a “good deed” by cutting the penis of a person who has not elected to get their penis cut”
I would encourage parties with similar beliefs to join the petition, at http://petition.nomorebris.org - tinijocaro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Circumcision is an old, outdated procedure that hasn't and never has had any place in a "modern and civilized" society. You're removing the best parts people!
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4pczero, it looks like you signed up here just do Digg this story and comment, which is very heartening, especially to hear that you live near the hospital. You're absolutely right that in the information age we can stop this. Stick around.
- SammyJr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I'm glad it made the paper. I'm not too far from you, in Bloomington, and our paper won't touch it with a ten foot poll. Hopefully, the circ rates in Mattoon and surrounding communties will take a nosedive.
- pcrzero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4if you underwent foreskin restoration you would realize the foreskin is critical for protection of the glans. I'm one month in and feel better, definite change in glans texture. www.restoreyourself.com is the taping method which is cheap and effective but takes 4 years for full skin growth.
- acidkore, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I sure know I won't let my son have a Bris like I had. Can't let his penis look like those of the damn Jews.
- pcrzero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I live 5 min from this hospital. Front page of my local newspaper. This barbaric practice needs to stop. We're still living in the dark ages. With the information age we can stop this.
www.nocirc.org - iggybdawg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3His parents should share the cost, they consented to this elective surgery.
- iggybdawg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3If it's for your son, do you really need a good reason NOT to cut healthy body parts off of him? The default action should just leave him with all body parts that he comes with.
- alexace, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Please stop spamming. Make your case in one comment, not 8.
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Digg This. Nobody should lose the head of their penis during surgery that was completely unnecessary in the first place. The word needs to get out. We can't ignore it just because it's painful to think about what happened to us.
- westhe32nd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I disagree with you on this one actics. Although I'm with you 100% on the circ issue, I feel that the parents, as the guardians of the child, should research ANY surgery they may perform on their child. Ignorance is NO excuse. Personally, I feel ZERO pity for them after this. The boy deserves everything.
- x911oz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4jesus actics calm down with the comments. this is actually quite strange hill to die on.
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6Thanks for posting. We can spread the word by getting this on the front page.
- pcrzero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3you've dug some very interesting articles. Friend'd :)
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Parents should research, and should know better than to approve totally unnecessary, cosmetic, ablative surgery on a child's sex organ.
And while they are wholly responsible for their choice, so too a physician wholly responsible for his choice to operate, and to provide competent medical care.
I find it easier to excuse parents for being (often misled) into this mistake, than to excuse the providers, since it's their BUSINESS, they profit from it, and it's 100% their job to know that there's no reason to do this. - witchymama2, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3My children will remain intact.
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3NBC picks up the story: http://www.nbc5.com/health/13714537/detail.html
Has anyone seen coverage of this on television? I imagine there have been a few blurbs, but wonder if anyone can confirm that. - SammyJr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3First of all, I think you are lying since there really aren't that many American adult intact men in this country. The chances of you finding one with a wife who is displeased with her husband's intact penis and is willing to cheat is very low. Multiple women? Almost impossible.
Second, why should anyone care about the sexual opinion of a woman (or man) who cheats? Cheating is trashy, unenlightened behavior. Its no wonder that someone that lowbrow wouldn't respect natural anatomy. - SammyJr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Limit of $500,000? That's bogus. This kid deserves a lot more than $500,000 for the destruction of his penis.
- westhe32nd, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I agree, their motivation is profit. They get money from the parents, then additional money when they sell the mutilated foreskin. The physician should definitely be held at least partially accountable, but I feel the parents are at least 80-90% responsible. My wife and I are expecting a child. Whether it's a boy or girl, we know (s)he will be safe from this disgusting practice. No doctor in the world could convince me otherwise.
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Taken together, the voices for genital integrity cannot be ignored. Speaking up makes a big difference. Don't stop until the cutting stops, friend! :)
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I wish I could be sure you are joking. Obviously, babies don't ever volunteer for a circumcision.
- tinijocaro, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I used to live in Bloomington when my first son was born and we DIDN'T circumcise him (St. Joe'sHospital). Best decision I've ever made for my children. I also taught at the Junior high school there.
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4The parents can be faulted for choosing totally optional, unnecessary surgery for their son, but it's also true that they picked it off a "menu" from the health care provider. In a restaurant, people assume that what's on the menu is actually edible. In health care, people expect their physician to not offer inadvisable surgeries. The parents couldn't have made the bad choice they did if it wasn't offered to them!
- SammyJr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2My son was born at Bromenn.
Did St. Joe's try any scare tactics on you? To Bromenn's credit, they asked once prebirth and never again - good for an American hospital. I've heard stories of mothers being solicited every time a hospital employee or doctor entered into the room. - joshshu, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2men get mutilated and become gays
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2unhappilycut,
I see you joined Digg today and Dugg this story!
I think you'll also like many of my past and future story submissions too, when you see them. The more people who loudly proclaim the violation that was their involuntary circumcision, the sooner young males will be protected. Only so many speaking up can be ignored. Stick around, add your voice. - actics, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yes. Also, men get mutilated and become heteros.
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You raise an interesting issue. But it's still wrong to blame parents for accepting an offer to perform surgery on their baby from health care professionals. They rely on health care workers to be competent. Health care providers should be treating circumcision like any other elective, unnecessary surgery, which is that you don't do it routinely to neonates.
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3More coverage, local, with a little more info:
http://www.jg-tc.com/articles/2007/07/19/news/doc469edde7e929a511952004.txt - alexace, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3I volunteered to be curcumcised as a baby. I wanted my rights as a baby. You and your commie friends can pry my penis out of my cold, dead hands.
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3That's an oddly put question. Circumcision removes sensitive areas. I guess one advantage is that when you remove body parts, the removed tissue can't ever become infected or cancerous. Of course, that's not usually a good reason to remove body parts.
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5Come on diggers... this is fresh news...this is important... parents need to know about these risks... this needs to be on the front page.
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -5/+5More coverage of this preventable tragedy:
http://www.wbbm780.com/pages/695147.php?contentType=4&contentId=700283 - actics, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Thank you for joining the discussion and digging this story!
We've got to get the word out, whether religious or secular, circumcision violates the rights of children. - actics, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4Ok...9 Diggs... How many does it take to get on the front page? Parents need to know what can happen if they get sold this elective surgery for their newborns.
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3More coverage. This one's from a medical gadget website:
http://www.medgadget.com/archives/2007/07/ouch_botched_circumcision.html - VeryBoredNow, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2I can't tell you how many women I've been with that liked it more circumsized than their husbands filthy weeners.... I might have banged your wife because you chose not to do it.
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAH - actics, on 10/11/2007, -5/+3One more thing... check out my other stores... I think you'll want to digg a few more of them, too!
- actics, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1What is your point?
- alexace, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2I'm curcumcised and I feel fine. Never had any of these "magical" sympoms that you so eloquently claim occur. I think there are bigger things in the world to worry about. Like what color shirt I will wear tommorow.
