Of course, this gift horse has rotten teeth and waaay too much energy. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17Sweet, do the vitamins cancel out the carcinogens? I'm all over this one.
(I drink way too much Diet Coke, I guess I might as well start getting something out of it ;) ) - VtmnR, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14It looks like it has good intentions... but I don't think it'll really solve much either.
A for effort. - spraguep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9That's like companies that use hydrogenated oil as filler in their multivitamins...

- TheDrunkMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Wrong. The diet version with the artificial sweetners is healthier than the regular with all that sugar.

"There seems to be a lingering perception that nonnutritive sweeteners
are bad for you. But research hasn’t shown any significant health
concerns. In 1977, the FDA proposed a ban on saccharin because of a
suspected link to cancer in rats. It turned out that the research was
flawed. There’s no credible evidence that saccharin or other
nonnutritive sweeteners cause cancer."
"There is no evidence to suggest that the consumption of foods
containing [aspartame], according to the provisions of the Food and
Drug Regulations and as part of a well-balanced diet, would pose a
health hazard to consumers. In addition, other scientific advisory
bodies such as the Scientific Committee for Food of the European
Community, and the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) of
the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization and World Health
Organization have reviewed all the available safety studies and have
found aspartame to be safe." - ciaziraphale, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Orange and apple juices have plenty of vitamins, and taste better.
- andydumi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7I do like the 7UP all natural. So maybe this is at least a step in the right direction.
- Kokichi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Aye. It's so annoying when people go around saying that a diet drink is worse than the regular. It's another one of those cultural myths that allow you to separate the educated from the sheeple.
- hackwrench, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The other coke story doesn't appear factual to me
"You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down."
Uh, since I've never vomited from overwhelming sweetness, I find this statement very "out there". - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yage...what an awesome name...can I just call you Banisteriopsis for short?...or maybe caapi ;-)
I wonder if anyone will get your comment.
Turns out that Sodium Benzoate, in the presence of an acid, is converted back to Benzene!
Sodium Benzoate is, of course, a very common preservative in certain foods in the UUS, and is found in Coke, Pepsi, and many carbonated beverages -- which also usually have phosphoric acid....which will do nicely!
Even Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid), if taken with something with benzoic acid in it, will do the conversion of it into Benzene! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I don't care how many vitamins and minerals it has...Diet Coke still tastes like *****. Period.
- ZackScott, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8What exactly does a diet caffeine-free drink provide? Just flavored water? It's about time they put some vitamins in it!
- blapierre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Everything you eat/drink is a "poison". Google for the toxicity of water.
It's not the substance that makes a poison, it's the dose. - ZRamm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3But what will it do with Mentos?
- Yage2006, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Nice so you can have your vitamins with your cancer causing benzine.

http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=595143 - blapierre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's not the first. 7UP Plus (or something) has been out for a year or two.
- TheDrunkMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Here's what Health Canada has to say on the subject:
"There is no evidence to suggest that the consumption of foods
containing [aspartame], according to the provisions of the Food and
Drug Regulations and as part of a well-balanced diet, would pose a
health hazard to consumers. In addition, other scientific advisory
bodies such as the Scientific Committee for Food of the European
Community, and the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) of

found aspartame to be safe."
Asparatame is broken down into 2 normal amino acids. It is perfectly safe unless you have phenylketonuria, a certain genetic disorder that you need to be on a special diet for anyway.
"The FDA Consumer magazine, in its May-June 2005 issue, simply
recommends chossing "diet soda, low-fat or fat-free milk, water,
flavored water, or 100 percent fruit juice" as alternatives to regular
soda " - mislam, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Yea Coca Cola must have heard about the "other" coke story today http://digg.com/health/What_Happens_To_Your_Body_If_You_Drink_A_Coke_Right_Now
So here comes the healthy coke... - zephc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Pepsi Perfect, please!

- bananaguyc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"will be the first nutrient-enhanced carbonated soda to be offered by a major brand, said Beverage Digest"
--Not true, I'm sure a lot of people have heard of 7-up plus, not to mention writers for magazines focused on beverages:
http://www.carbwire.com/2004/06/02/7-up-plus
Not that we should expect this to be anything special. We already have countless energy drinks on the market which are basically vitamin-enhanced sodas. Also, the more "soda-like" the beverage typically, the less vitamins are in it. - twiztedambience, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yea this is foul play. notice how cnn is linked to... it's a nice standard thing to link too. perfect for PR...
As I said in my previous post...
Has anybody realized that this digg post is Coke's PR response to this digg, posted within the day? http://digg.com/health/What_Happens_To_Your_Body_If_You_Drink_A_Coke_Right_Now
The above article, which got over 2000 diggs, basically talked about how coke destroys your body.

- ricardopicam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, everything the evil corporations sell to us poor consumers is evil. Don't buy anything; grow your own corn. While I'm not defending corporations en masse, free enterprise is a wonderful thing. I happen to like my computer, cell phone, and Diet Coke Plus. To me, it tastes better than plain Diet Coke. That's not to say it will be to everybody's liking. Don't many of you realize that we all have different taste bud structures, etc? Tastes do differ. Please don't assume that the world revolves around your perceptions. As for safety concerns, don't drink it if you think it's bad. I have read extensively about artificial sweeteners throughout the years and try to make an educated opinion. It's my opinion and I don't try to force it down anyone's throat. I believe that the risks are minimal and I'm willing to take the risks (and I am extremely risk-adverse). What I find annoying is having other people's opinions forced on me, whether it be the books I read, the films I watch, or the soft drinks I consume. If the evidence were overwhelming that the stuff causes cancer, okay, but in light of the numerous studies done, I have to go with the science. Could it be wrong? Of course, but too many people are shooting from the hip and no amount of evidence can persuade them otherwise that something they abhor might not be so bad. The "organic is good, everything else is bad" crowd don't realize their own prejudices.
I, for one, thank God (or the spaghetti monster, or whomever) for diet drinks. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 13 (I'm now 54). At the time, diet drinks were just coming out (Tab, Fresca). Tab was one of the few pleasures that made my disease barely tolerable. I still like the taste of Tab; it's a little bitter, which is what I like. Diet Coke Plus tastes almost the same as Tab to me. I rarely buy Tab because it is never discounted the way Diet Coke always is. For the record, I drink close to a two-liter bottle of diet soft drink every day (since my teens). It is the one pleasure that I don't have to limit due to calorie intake. The best diet soda in my opinion? Vernor's ginger ale. - burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm not sure if that's the case here -- it wouldn't surprise me. Here's one that I don't think was a coincidence:
About a month ago, there was a FP story on Digg about Starbucks blocking... was it Haiti? From trademarking 2 types of coffee, costing the country a relatively astronomical amount.
The next day, I went to Starbucks, and got a coupon for a free coffee. On the coupon was a short little story about the doctors Starbucks hires to look after the coffee farmers in poor countries.
Holy PR. - hichnii, on 04/02/2008, -0/+1Detox diets are on the rise. Walk into a health food store or pharmacy and you’ll be presented with a huge variety of detox kits. Some are designed to cleanse your digestive system or your liver, while others promise weight loss.
http://detox.weebly.com/ - brihar73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So, you stop drinking the evil soda, take all your multi-vitamins, try to live a healthy life, and then... BLAM! You're hit by a car while crossing the street. Or terrorists decide to poison your wonderful bottled water. Wow. A lot of good that stuff did you. A lot of things are bad for you and involve risk; The polluted air you breathe, driving to the store, sex, etc. Just do what you can and let yourself be happy.
- godmode, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1why dont they just include all that crap in normal coke

All I want is a Pepsi. - TheDrunkMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"As a food additive it is used as a preservative, effectively killing most yeasts, bacteria and fungi. Sodium benzoate is effective only in acidic conditions (pH < 3.6) making its use most prevalent in foods such as preserves, salad dressings (vinegar), carbonated drinks (carbon dioxide), jams (citric acid), fruit juices (citric acid), and chinese food sauces (soy, mustard, and duck). It is also found in alcohol-based mouthwash. More recently, sodium benzoate has become apparent in many soft drinks, including Sprite, Fanta, Sunkist and Dr Pepper."
There have been very few reported cases of benzene contamination in soft drinks, however. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3and as it turns out, Donald Rumsfeld pulled some dirty tricks to get the poison, Aspartame approved by the FDA, since he was the head of the company that was making it (Nutra-sweet)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool. I drink too much soda anyways. May as well have something beneficial in it.
- adrien, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
I think that Diet Coke shouldn't feel as sweet as regular Coke. It would help people lose the habit of eating or drinking sweet food.
That's a more important than adding vitamines. - nofxjunkee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Daniel591992:
used to drink a lot of pepsi, stopped drinking soft drinks for a few years and then in the last 2 years i started drinking coke... thumbs up. but not for diet coke, or diet anything. - CHARLSTORMFRONT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1People are going to drink soda even if it is not good for you or your teeth. Adding vitamins cant hurt. Many kids and adults don't get enough vitamins. I have been taking vitamins for many years and it gives you extra energy. I think it is a great idea but should not be promoted as healthy.
