||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||| - ahawks, on 01/06/2009, -0/+14Fantastic, I've had Type 1 for 2.5 years :(
Edit / Followup:
For ***** sake people, there are more diabetics than Type 2. You cannot refer to Type 2 as just "diabetes". This study was done on Type 2's, and does not relate to Type 1's such as myself. - loper, on 01/06/2009, -1/+15Luckily I have type 1. uhh luckily...
- jgubbe, on 01/06/2009, -7/+20Like Diabetes was going to make you smarter.
- ahawks, on 01/06/2009, -0/+10High 5 fellow type 1's!
- soupdawg30, on 01/06/2009, -0/+9Don't you hate it.
I just assume all articles related to diabetes are for type 2 diabetes. People forget that type 1 exists. - manuelhp42, on 01/06/2009, -0/+7It doesn't seem too representative, with only 41 patients being studied, all of whom had type 2 diabetes. We are having a discussion about this on TuDiabetes:
http://tudiabetes.com/forum/topics/diabetes-dulls- ... - RyanChappell, on 01/06/2009, -1/+8Sounds like the "mental slow down" is just part of the fatigue that comes with the disease. Couldn't they put up a blazing sensational headline like that for 50 other diseases that cause fatigue??
Thyroid, ADHD, CFS, Fybriomyalgia, MS, Lyme, Narcolepsy, African Sleeping Sickness, Malaria, anemia, sleeplessness, vitamin deficiency . . .
Fatigue is the least of your worries if you have Diabetes. - syobwoc, on 01/06/2009, -0/+7same here loper, oh how so luckily....
- soupdawg30, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6Woot Woot, how lucky of us.
- cawpin, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6That is so not true. I know several people who had/have Type 2 diabetes and not one of them is or was overweight. It certainly doesn't help, but weight is nowhere near the 99% you claim as a cause.
- cawpin, on 01/06/2009, -0/+6Yeah.....so lucky. I hate it.
- drunkenoaf, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4Come on scientists on Digg. Anyone care to speculate on a mechanism for this? Some of your cognitive faculties fine; others not.
Glucose is fairly reactive, and destroys the vasculature in excess-- leading to most of the diabetic complications-- e.g. retinopathy, polyneuropathy. Some brain area (or brain area vasculature) more sensitive to this bit than others? A hormonal imbalance secondary to diabetes? Are obese non-diabetic people similarly impaired? - lisaawesome, on 01/06/2009, -4/+8Hmm maybe this explains my father's mental decline.
- Darko, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4High 5 to my fellow type 1's!
- XeRoX2k2, on 01/06/2009, -0/+4as a diabetic i can tell you, more sugar is the same as stomping on the gas while the car in in neutral, the gears are spinning but you ain't going anywhere
- stuartjmoore, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3You disgust me.
- cawpin, on 01/06/2009, -1/+4That's funny, because I always think of Type 1, since that's what I have.
- Lordpenguin007, on 01/05/2009, -3/+6Horrible
there is too little done to prevent diseases which destroy lives every day - RyanChappell, on 01/06/2009, -0/+3I propose that it is related to fatigue.
- Paranor01, on 01/06/2009, -1/+41. It's spelled Diabetes
2. You don't check your blood pressure, you check your blood sugar levels.
Please learn what you're talking about before you type anything... thank you. - drunkenoaf, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Insightful. The simple ones are the best.
- Paranor01, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2A logical explination for this would be how consumerism has pushed junk food, processed food, "fast food" on us so much, we can't afford to eat healthy so it's easier to get overweight with so many sedimentary jobs these days (ie: sitting at your desk all day on digg making an ***** out of yourself like jriggs420 with his boo-hoo comment). I mean *****, it's more expensive to eat like we did 100yrs ago (relatively speaking of course). If we all ate the way we're supposed to, rather than with junk/fast/processed foods... it'd cost us $20 a meal @ home! so your logic of the past doesn't fly anymore dick... boo-*****-hoo for you I guess
- soupdawg30, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Could be lack of glucose getting to the brain. Most people with type 2 run high glucose levels in their blood which means the glucose is not getting to where it needs to be.
- AgentG96, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Type 1 since age 1 here. Hello!
- ig88b1, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Everyone hates it, but at least our brains are not affected. Usually type 1 is seen as worse than type 2.
- cledford, on 06/19/2009, -0/+1Great article. Don't forget the diabetic socks! http://www.choicediabeticsocks.com/
- dacunni1, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2Morons like the two of you... You don't have to be obese to get diabetes. I know two people with diabetes and neither are obese or even overweight. It is largely hereditary. I mean Jay Cutler was just diagnosed with it; does he look obese to you?
- Djstawberryjam, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2wohoo type one for teh wins, lets hope they didnt mention type one because it's not effect, or they are lying to us, if so they must think we are stupid....ignore that.
- XeRoX2k2, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2ha ha it's walrus guy
- RyanChappell, on 01/06/2009, -0/+2It does sound kind of "well duh," but I mean it is related to the general fatigue symptoms of Diabetes, as opposed to brain damage or something, but the mechanism for the fatigue is blood sugar imbalance?
- xavyre, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1I am not fat, or overweight at all and I was diagnosed with diabetes. Don't be an idiot.
- xavyre, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1I had a thought about this news but my damn diabetes made me forget what I was going to....
- linuxrebel, on 01/07/2009, -0/+1Let me see if I've got this straight. If we had put GW on insulin in 2000 we could have avoided all this crap?
- Paranor01, on 01/06/2009, -1/+2Ok, this drives me nuts. I am tired of all these people who have a hate on for "fatties". Believe it or not, but most people who are overweight did not intentionally get that way. Yes, there are some who cannot control their weight because of diseases like Thyroid disorders, but many have become overweight because of depression and low self-esteem. You get down, you eat, before you know it... you're bigger than you are. Then you eat more because idiots and ***** persecute you because you're overweight, or something else takes hold to keep you in a depressed state which makes you eat more.
You all seem to go on and on about racism & prejudices all over the place, yet no-one (or very rarely) says anything about stopping it with people who are overweight.
Yes, we put the food in our mouths. Yes, it is our body and ultimately our responsibility in keeping it healthy... but FFS people, give us a break so we can feel good enough to do something about it!
(digg me down, I know I will be because no-one wants to hear truth about how they're anywhere near to being part of the problem, and I'm just a whining fat man [loads of sarcasm] ) - CrotchCrusader, on 05/27/2009, -0/+1My grandmother was able to control her diabetes with diet and exercise.. http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1745894/c ... for more info
- jemka, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Diabetes is now more bad than we thought and should STILL be avoided. I'm glad to see scientists using their time wisely.
- RyanChappell, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1Also, I applied for jobs at my current employer, interviewing 3 times over 5 years before getting offered this job. Each time they gave me the Wonderlic "Personality" Test which is a timed 10 min 50 question IQ test. The first two times I remember being my sleepy normal self, and making 20 something despite nailing it and making close to 40 previously at another employer. This last time I slept 12+ hr the night before and drank a 20 oz diet mt dew with 91mg of caffeine and made it into the 40s answering questions not sure what the score was, but I got the job. Not sure if the score mattered as much as my skill set being vastly improved, but I am sure fatigue affects performance measures in studies as well!
- BabyWookie, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1I had some elevated blood glucose levels on my bloodworks in the past couple of years. My doc thought that I might be pre-diabetic, but follow-up tests showed normal levels. My melon is definitely not as sharp as it used to be though. I attributed it to pushing 30.
- hansk, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1diabeetus was spelt that way cause thats how wilferd says it.
i agree with you about 2.
i feel well within my rights to express my ignorance over the net...thank you. - buddyw, on 01/06/2009, -0/+1More sugar = More smarts?
- inactive, on 01/06/2009, -1/+2Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life son.
- jriggs420, on 01/06/2009, -2/+2Boo-*****-hoo!
Tell me then where were all the obese people 100 years ago? Are all the conditions you've pointed out unique to the last 5 or so generations? Seems like a fairly recent phenomenon to me. - as2009, on 04/11/2009, -0/+0Good post on diabetes.
