  • Rain12913, on 04/30/2009, -3/+20You've contradicted yourself. If hand washing and avoiding coughing on others are both effective in preventing the spread of infection, than these masks do indeed help.

    Hand washing helps because it removes viruses that may be present on your hands, thus preventing said viruses from entering your body when you either eat or touch your nose and face. Touching your nose and face is quite difficult with a mask on, and that certainly helps seeing as most of us do so unconsciously throughout the day.

    Also, people who are carrying the flu without knowing it (which is completely possible considering the relatively minor symptoms that are presented in most people who have it) are ensuring that they don't cough and sneeze on other people by wearing these masks. Since people won't know they're carriers until long after they've likely infected many others, it can't hurt to encourage people to wear masks whether or not they're feeling sick.

    Try to avoid making sweeping, general statements, they're often incorrect.

    The only effective measures continue to include hand washing, avoidance of other sick people, avoidance of coughing on others, etc.

    The face masks won't help you.

    The most important thing to remember is: Do not panic.
