- Nydas, on 10/12/2007, -1/+93Thank goodness. *Cracks knuckles*
- nyx210, on 10/12/2007, -4/+62No it doesn't. It enlarges penis size.
- Jonny5alive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47You read that at the top of this freaking page.
- clubmasta2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+53It actually gives you cancer
- killerofkiller, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42*forwards link to mom* See it Doesn't give you Arthritis..... "Stop cracking your knuckles, you'll get Arthritis"
- kuj007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+30Link to referenced Howstuffworks article on why your knuckles crack in the first place.
http://science.howstuffworks.com/question437.htm - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31"98% of all statistics are made up"
That's *only* the 900th time ive heard someone say that on digg. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13I love waking up in the morning and using the edge of my bed to crack my back
- GiggleStick, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13So armbar, you've never cracked your knuckle it seems.
- hectorinwa, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Apparently, it affects your memory as well.
- Jarett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8sweet. one more new year's resolution i won't have to live up to.
- spikeismoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Digged you down for thinking the age of content in this article is not relevant to people today. Ignorance at it's best.
First time i have read something like this before, and i'm finally glad i have some decent comebacks when people tell me i'll get arthritis clicking my fingers. If someone says "Don't click your fingers, you'll get arthritis in your hands." to me again, i'll simply reply "Don't jog so much, you'll get arthritis in your knees." - xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Hangover much, selrahc?
- rickytan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I don't know about you guys, but I get all my medical advice from "FAQFarm"
- bobpaul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"The dugg website says:
"Cracking your knuckles wears away the cartilage between the joints over a long period of time.""
The dugg website also contains no citations and appears to be simply a collection of reader submissions. I wouldn't trust it's accuracy. Most of the submissions are simply personal experience, which means nothing a scientific discussion. - xoxuxox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5No but it will give you arthritis.
- ODSTKuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Cracking joints is the ultimate prank tool to use on your friends.
You can crack your neck, pretend to go limp. Your friends will freak out.
To make it more realistic soil yourself. - macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There's also a Wikipedia article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cracking_joints - HanSolo69, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"There has never been a meaningful study done that has shown knuckle cracking to be harmful to the finger joints. 25% of americans crack habitually."
25% of americans USE crack habitually is what i read that is. and from where i come from that's true, maybe a little low if anything. - Xinareiaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4lol, I always roll my knuckles on the bottom of my jawbone for cracktactular popping goodness, it annoys the hell out of everyone :P
- loquax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Now, does jerking off really cause hairy palms and blindness?
- slicedoranges, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Yeah my science teacher told me this years ago, and I never forgot.
- largobargo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Don't crack your *****. Trust me on this one. I am impotent because I cracked my ***** too many times.
- CaptainSpeaking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Let a chiropractor do that.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Hasn't this been known for well over a decade now? (or longer)?
I remember when I was a kid (I'm 26 now), I would always get nagged about cracking my knuckles, neck, whatever else... read some article about how it's all BS wives tale... showed my mom.
Haha, she wasn't happy :) Guess it kinda hurts the adult ego to have a child show ya up :P - ptryan123, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've heard that cracking one's neck is more damaging -- a friend of mine had some vertebrae fused after 20 years of habitually cracking his neck.
- armbar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6"It enlarges penis size."
I can attest to the truth of this statement. - maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3peanut-butter and crack sandwich!
- ricree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can anyone actually find a link to the referenced study? All we have here is a story that talks about a story that talks about the study. I've been looking, and I found the site for the journal, but I haven't found the article itself yet.
http://journals.elsevierhealth.com/periodicals/ymmt - ricree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Ok, this article is even more of a mess than I thought. The study that is referenced is itself referencing two other studies to get the effects of the damage. As far as I can see, the article that they referenced does not actually have any original tests itself. The two studies that it references are:
(18.) Swezey RL, Swezey SE. The consequences of habitual knuckle cracking. West J Med 1975; 122:377-9.
(19.) Castellanos J, Axelrod D. Effect of habitual knuckle cracking on hand function. Ann Rheum Dis 1990; 49:308-9.
The article itself is
Brodeur, Raymond. The Audible Release Associated with Joint Manipulation. Journal of Manipulative & Physiological Therapeutics; Apr95, Vol. 18 Issue 4, p155, 10p - sardion2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wish we had a "Redundant" thumbs down option.
- lupinglade, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well, who thought it did? santa clause never came on xmas :(
- shoeshine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I used to crack my wrists all the time. I have tendonitis in both wrists now. A 3 hour Guitar Hero session tends to make my hands useless for the rest of the day.
- tulaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Dugg down for marking something old as inaccurate. I have always been told, and had no reason to disbelieve, that cracking my knuckles would give me arthritis. I learned something new, even though the knowledge may have been around for decades.
- Toast1185, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks un-sourced article, I can rest easy now :)
- catullus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1am i the only one who thought that link said www.fagfarm.com ?
- CaptainSpeaking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sure, I guess his grip is obviously stronger than mine, but you know, for different reasons. Keep in mind that they also grab people by their kimonos, and other things that help develop your grip force.
Individually speaking, my digits are pretty firm, and that has helped me a lot playing piano. - hypeiv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1each one of my kung fu instructors knuckles pops each time he makes a fist (which he probably does about a hundred times a day during his practice) and I am going to go out on a limb and say his grip is stronger than yours... so I doubt popping makes your hands weaker
- CaptainSpeaking, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Last time I cracked my finger was during my piano class, three years ago. My teacher almost whacked me, and I haven't cracked a finger ever since. Even if I attempt to crack one of my fingers, I can't, my joints are way too hard and it hurts. And also, everybody says I have a strong grip...
I guess that's a benefit of not cracking your fingers then... - Blueberryhills, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1One citation is from kuj007's link to "howstuffworks", and why do people complain that it makes your fingers stiff? I don't say it's dangerous, but it's not just fine either...
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I can attest to this, as I crack my knuckles *all* the time. I have a notably weak grip for someone my size, but my fingers are insanely flexible towards my palm. They go almost straight down and I can touch my wrist with my fingertips if I help with my other hand. On the other hand (har har) my pathetic grip is a pain in the ass when I practice aikido; the basic "grab other guys wrist -> other guy does technique -> swap roles -> keep doing it until you're told to do something else" routine, since my grip tends to come loose the second he/she moves a muscle. ^^
- djm91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ive been trying to stop cracking my knuckles for so long... now i just do it without even noticing
- KniteWulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cracking the sternum hurts. Take a word of advice don't DIY.
- gostars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thanks.
Now if I can just get this hair out of my palms. - roominator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and carpel tunnel
- KniteWulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've NEVER experienced my fingers being weaker as a side effect. And I crack my knuckles alot.
- emehrkay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1*cracks big toe*
- myheaditches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1And some people think that if it's on the internet it's complete BS unless it fits their ideal world.
