- pumpkinstuff, on 08/19/2009, -2/+233I thought the Onion only wrote satire?
I guess I was wrong - chieflbm, on 08/18/2009, -0/+230Too close to the truth. Yikes.
- bengtc, on 08/19/2009, -3/+187FTA
"Why, there's no reason we can't work together to deny health care to everyone but the richest 1 percent of the population."
"That's what America is all about," he added.
I am not seeing any satire in the article... - PhilMoskowitz, on 08/19/2009, -2/+123They should kill Medicare while they're at it since people are so afraid of socialism.
- pintomp3, on 08/19/2009, -1/+100I just ordered my own fire engine. I can't wait to get started on paving my own roads!
- DOCNM, on 08/18/2009, -3/+82its funny cos its true
- Hetman, on 08/19/2009, -3/+78I agree. Who needs public school anyways. I am graduated and have no kids. I can afford a private school system if I do have kids. Screw all these socialist programs.
- FujoGusto, on 08/19/2009, -1/+62I think the next logical step would be to privatize law enforcement and create the Crime Insurance Industry to cover the cost.
- ryrocker, on 08/19/2009, -3/+58"But what we can't seem to agree upon is how to best keep it broken, while still ensuring that no elected official takes any political risk whatsoever. It’s a very complicated issue."
even if this weren't an onion article, im pretty sure thats something nancy would say - Hetman, on 08/19/2009, -1/+52That would be awesome though. It would be like gangs of new york. We could just sit outside someone house and make there neighbors pay for our service or we would let the fire spread to there homes.
- DarthVolta, on 08/19/2009, -0/+48You're both idiots.
- srickard, on 08/19/2009, -1/+48Unbelievably true!
- dobbinmon, on 08/19/2009, -8/+54hey right wing christian conservatives, jesus dished out free healthcare... big whup wanna fight about it?
- pintomp3, on 08/19/2009, -9/+5424% of Republicans don't know that Medicare is a government program.
- TigerStar337, on 08/19/2009, -10/+53Somalia is a Republican paradise. There is no police, no government officials meddling in business. No TAXES! No LAWS! There is no public health system. In Somalia, you are free from the Nanny-state. Bon voyage you lucky Republicans. Don't forget to write! Oops, forgot! There is no post office either
- dagnabbit, on 08/19/2009, -2/+44At first I was like :D but then I was like :-(
- mithrasinvictus, on 08/19/2009, -1/+35It's no coincidence all those commie firefighters paint their vehicles red.
- pintomp3, on 08/19/2009, -2/+32He's getting buried for being too lazy to google it himself:
http://belowthebeltway.com/2009/08/18/one-quarter- ... - Fleagleman, on 08/19/2009, -2/+27I found the "Most Children Strongly Opposed to Childrens' Healthcare" even more enjoyable.
- LinuxLars, on 08/19/2009, -0/+24Well, remember the opposite of PROgress, then, is CONgress.
- firesphotons, on 08/19/2009, -6/+28I believed in you Mr. Obama, felt like JFK was running or something. That was until you revealed yourself as a pussy, why is it the "decider" mentaility can never be in someone fighting for the people? Anyhow, it's all theatre now, the left/right reality show, where nothing is accomplished but the dispursement of huge salaires to politicians from both sides that suck dick. Perhaps one day a revolution will occur, only to spawn another wave of fresh faces to be corrupted into ***** the masses, then the cycle repeats again. It's great being 50 because I just don't give a ***** anymore, might as well give in to the " ***** everyone but me" people I share this once great nation with, it's the new American way.
- tnoy, on 08/19/2009, -5/+26We're digging people down that want sources for information now?
Wow... - Ghostwo, on 08/19/2009, -2/+22Everything on the internet is true, without exception. Asking for sources is pointless, and obviously meant to offend.
- davyusa, on 08/19/2009, -0/+20WOW you're a flaming idiot. I logged on for the first time in 2 years just to bury you.
- SpectralGhost, on 08/19/2009, -0/+19"A house divided against itself cannot stand" -- Abraham Lincoln
- roodammy44, on 08/19/2009, -5/+24No, that would cause them to agree on charging similar rates so they wouldn't have to compete.
Have you ever heard of Cartels? Since you know so much about market forces I'm sure you do.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cartel
So.... How do you propose smashing a cartel where if you refuse to buy the product, you die? - Jaedon, on 08/19/2009, -0/+18There is no such thing as free healthcare...
If anyone honestly thinks free healthcare is what is being proposed by either party, go read the bill again.
Nothing in this bill focuses on the real problems involved in rising Medical costs. - 17999, on 08/19/2009, -0/+17The thread is over.
/golf clap - Rhendal, on 08/19/2009, -2/+19@tnoy
http://www.phoenix.edu/courses/mth/mth540.html - unfilterthought, on 08/19/2009, -2/+19feel free to stop driving on those government funded roads then.
- cfuse, on 08/19/2009, -1/+17You'll note that he got nailed to a cross for it.
- Shwaavay, on 08/19/2009, -14/+28Source?
- Fleagleman, on 08/19/2009, -1/+14That's nice. You know this is an Onion article, right? Don't trip over your soap box on the way out.
- s73v3r, on 08/20/2009, -0/+12Exactly. Look at the Cable/DSL internet markets.
- CoolSilver, on 08/19/2009, -0/+12Most times they sit anyway.
- prisoner24601, on 08/19/2009, -2/+14I'd respectfully suggest you are using the wrong analogy. As a very right-wing conservative (on many issues) who is also surprisingly open to the idea of universal healthcare, I'd strongly suggest you make your point when talking to "my kind" using the Department of Defense instead of any other federal entity/program.
When you start with a program that conservatives tend to dislike/distrust/view immediately as inefficient or "fundamentally broken" you lose our attention. We generally think social security is a black hole for cash, that the post office is disturbingly inefficient, that Medicare wouldn't even be needed if everyone would just get a job, etc. etc. etc.
But we LOVE our military. Oh yes, we get goose pimples at the sight of an aircraft carrier docking in San Diego and soldiers climbing out of a Blackhawk.
So use THAT. You can start a very correct, valid and even (dare I say it in the context of all the yelling and name-calling these days...) sophisticated and nuanced discussion of the fact that it simply makes sense sometimes for the government to do some things that private industry can't. But you need to start in the right place.
Any for heaven's sake, DON'T call it socialism! Don't even use the word until you've gotten at least 5 or 10 minutes into the conversation, and then be SURE you've established the principle that you are NOT suggesting any fundamental shift in democratic principles. You are simply pointing out that healthcare is ONE SPECIFIC area that we are all discussing, and that it is worth at least CONSIDERING that our society should view it much like we view national defense.
That's how you'll get my attention. - Orochiyagami, on 08/19/2009, -0/+12obviously these 2 don't know what the onion (fake news) is or just didn't click on the links to read the real articles @_@
- nullcodes, on 08/19/2009, -2/+13Yeah and lets have privatized military too... why should people who don't want to be protected have to pay for those who do?
- SATCHMOblivious, on 08/19/2009, -2/+13i thought this was a normal article at first. then i thought i saw a typo. then i saw the onion. then i lol'd. then i got scared.
- Keggluneq, on 08/20/2009, -3/+14" I have to scratch my head because about 82% of Americans have health insurance"
1) A lot of those are either on Medicare.
2) The rest have health "insurance" only until they get sick. - PeanutCheeseBar, on 08/19/2009, -0/+11That's gold, Jerry! Gold!
- reticulate, on 08/19/2009, -0/+11I'm going to assume you've never heard of price-fixing.
- davyusa, on 08/19/2009, -2/+12first of all, you should take note of how you use the word "we". you should get your get your head out of your ass and realize that the world doesn't revolve around you.
having health insurance might not be something you consider important, but it is to others. do you enjoy cherry picking what services the government should and shouldn't provide according to how much you need it? pathetic. - reverant, on 08/19/2009, -3/+13Gosh dang it, why does the government suck so much? Can we re-roll and get a new set of politicians that aren't politicians?
- Orochiyagami, on 08/19/2009, -0/+10this is an onion (fake news) article
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Onion
fake news!
read the articles not just the headline @_@ - inactive, on 08/19/2009, -1/+10Yeah let companies rip you off as much as they like and put any poison they like in your food and air. screw the government.
- Expl0siv0, on 08/20/2009, -1/+10its funny tan its true
- Ghostwo, on 08/19/2009, -5/+14I thought the onion only did satire, not real events...
- Rhendal, on 08/19/2009, -2/+11"You liberals always have this argument."
Hey remember a few years back when someone would say they didn't agree with the war and they'd always get the response, "What? You don't support your troops?"
This is the same thing, only using facts instead of assumptions. - Peko, on 08/20/2009, -1/+10I find it weird how (a hopefully small percentage of) gun owners feel the need to frequently espouse specifics about their guns and what they plan to do with them. Maybe it's an internet tough guy phenomenon - or some 'gun tough guy' variant. But it's weird to me how there is always a gun nut on the internet talking about the make and model of their guns, what nightscope they have, what rounds they have and how they plan to shoot terrorists or burglars.
I dunno - I have no issue with responsible gun ownership. If a person owns firearms, is trained and experienced in proper usage and safety and is able to meet their usage with the proper mental/emotional discipline - more power to 'em.
But here's the thing. When a guy starts gun-masturbating on the internet how they're going to shoot a burglar with their AK they've pretty well demonstrated how they aren't capable of the appropriate mental discipline.
So I propose a rule for gun control. If any gun owner starts jizzing publicly in some sort of gun-nut fetishization fashion - they don't get to have a gun until they have passed some sort of remedial training. -
