- seaofcheese, on 07/21/2009, -3/+21Way to make it a liberal issue because conservatives don't have gay sex or sex outside of marriage.
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -0/+9Are you sure it's intolerance and not just pure ignorance?
- SpykerSpeed, on 07/21/2009, -2/+10Wow. Can't AIDS be a heterosexual problem too? Why do we have to blame this ***** on the gays all the time, who only represent 1% of the population as it is?
Heteros can be promiscuous, too. - UV0001, on 07/21/2009, -4/+11What if your spouse is HIV positive? By having sex with them you can still contract it.
- charm803, on 07/21/2009, -1/+8@Baracklypse
Oh, so you only accept the "good" conservatives? How convenient. - charm803, on 07/21/2009, -2/+8I don't think you understand how AIDS works.
- charm803, on 07/21/2009, -3/+9I was going to say you're proof that your mom should've had an abortion, but I'm not that mean.
Instead, I'll point you to Ryan White, who died of AIDS he receive from a blood transfusion.
Thank GOD!
Right? Is that what you're saying? - cfuse, on 07/21/2009, -1/+7I thought they didn't have gay sex outside of public restrooms?
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -2/+7This "personal responsibility" crap is a very, very thin veil. What conservatives really mean when they say "take responsibility" is "you're going to be punished much more severely than you deserve." It's sadism.
- spriggig, on 07/21/2009, -2/+7Buried for ignorance and head-in-sand syndrome.
- ApokalypseNow, on 07/21/2009, -1/+5@Barackalypse
No True Scotsman, eh? - dusanmal, on 07/21/2009, -7/+11It is not intolerance but exactly the same mechanism that have spread AIDS in more tolerable American society: personal risky behavior and refusal to take simple preventative measures that are on every single billboard in Africa in a language clear to a 7yrs. old. Gay people may be underground there but common sense should make them wear condoms. They didn't do that in America, they are not doing it in Africa, over- or under- ground. That is the problem and it lies not in the surrounding society but in the afflicted community itself.
- WickedAngelR6, on 07/21/2009, -1/+5Spreading myths that raping virgins will cure it certainly doesn't help either.
- cfuse, on 07/21/2009, -1/+5We're more like 10% of population (if you only include those who self identify - If I slept with a woman that wouldn't make me straight, and the reverse is equally true. STDs don't give a damn what you think you are though).
The primary reason that gay men cop a large quantity of flak for HIV is that anal sex is a strong vector for infection. Anal isn't exclusively a gay activity, nor is it the only way to become infected. It's just the easiest way (behind sharing dirty needles in injecting drug users).
All of that being said, HIV is endemic in Africa. It isn't about promiscuity or orientation any more because it is *everywhere*. - cfuse, on 07/21/2009, -2/+6So you're pro gay marriage then?
- spriggig, on 07/21/2009, -1/+4Also buried for ignorance and head-in-sand syndrome.
- tgjerusalem, on 07/21/2009, -0/+3... yes, regular condoms work perfectly well for gay men, and WTF is with straight society and "gay man = anal sex"?? There are lots of ways for two men to have sex that doesn't involve anal. Not all gay men even like it. And many straight people do. And the creepy obsessive focus on what our sex lives are imagined to be is really disturbing and gross.
- SpykerSpeed, on 07/21/2009, -3/+6Do straight guys never engage in anal sex? Sorry, never got that memo. In fact 99% of all straight porn out there involves anal penetration.
- irvin666, on 07/21/2009, -1/+3HIV/AIDS does not care what your sexual reference is. It can not read your mind and think of themselves "Gee, this guy is straight, we better not infect him!"
- cfuse, on 07/21/2009, -0/+2They just hold hands and listen to that Katy Perry song.

AIDS can also take up to 6 months or longer to show, so even if those precautions were taken, it's not fool proof.
A more responsible way would be to take precautions with your sex partner each and every time.
Some people, like myself, plan on never marrying, so I get tested every 6 months, even when I'm not having sex. It would be dumb to follow your advice and only get tested when I'm going to get married, since it's never going to happen.
(But then again, I'm a girl, and I don't just sleep with random guys at the club. ) - MrRtd, on 07/21/2009, -3/+5Again it's organized religion and homophobes spewing out hate, and this article makes sound like African men are stupid (I'm sure they're not). If aids was a punishment for being gay, why aren't lesbians afflicted with high rates of HIV/Aids infection?
- inactive, on 07/21/2009, -4/+5Oh shut up, you childish homophobe. Your offensive opinions aren't needed here.
- lewhich, on 07/21/2009, -3/+4Liberals like haggard, folley, that senator ... why am I trying to reason with a douche?
- gimpbully, on 07/22/2009, -0/+1All sexual encounters carry the risk of STD, regardless of the participants. Are you in favor of legislating bedroom activity or just that which you find distasteful?
- tgjerusalem, on 07/21/2009, -1/+2When the community and society you live in has absolutely no room for responsible, mature relationships between men, no way for these relationships (and the psyches of the men who need them) to develop with dignity and the support structures of family and church and government, you're going to get a lot of men who engage in irresponsible, immature relationships.
This is not inherent to relationships between men, it is inherent to relationships between people who are systematically and continuously abused and degraded. These are the Ted Haggards of the world. These are men for whom the prospect of building a life with another man, of finding husbands rather than tricks or secret lovers, seems impossible.
These are men for whom it is all but compulsory to take a wife and have children and feign heterosexual desire, or even hope desperately that with effort heterosexual desire might spontaneously appear. When this inevitably fails, there is no dignified or socially responsible alternative, only trysts that are shrouded in secrecy and guilt and humiliation and fear of being ruined, arrested, even killed if caught.
How the *HELL* is the average person supposed to build a good life for themselves under these circumstances? Some do, some are uniquely strong, or uniquely fortunate to find pockets of community in which they can overcome the psychological and emotional crippling that having your ability to give and receive love treated as a sexual perversion will cause. But when you have that much ***** dumped on you from every corner of your world, it’s massively stacking the odds against you.
You don’t have many men cheating on their wives with other men, if gay men never felt obliged to try and be straight in the first place. You don’t have many men who seek only brief and furtive sexual encounters with strangers when they have the option of actual relationships, of a future together. Some will, yes, just as some heterosexual men will as well, but not many.
***** up people often behave irresponsibly, both towards themselves and other people. Give us the option of creating relationships and lives as queer people with dignity, self respect and the respect of our communities, stop treating us like ***** and you’ll see a hell of a lot more people being responsible. - ihatehippies, on 07/23/2009, -0/+1source plz
- Yage2006, on 07/21/2009, -1/+2I guess having people think that raping virgins makes the aids go away does not help either.
Probably does not help either that allot of these people still believe in witchcraft. - charm803, on 07/21/2009, -2/+3Didn't you hear? It's Obama's fault.
- airchomper, on 07/21/2009, -2/+2Because Lesbians don't put it in the butt.
- WickedAngelR6, on 08/03/2009, -0/+0http://www.cnn.com/2009/LIVING/06/04/cnnheroes.bet ...
- YoungRamblings, on 07/21/2009, -5/+5Yeah, you know how it is... It's easy to buy a condom when you want to bang a girl... But when you want to bang a guy? Oh no, you can't use of those SAME EXACT type of condoms, because - you know - being gay is 'underground.'
Christ this article is a pile of ignorance. - gimpbully, on 07/21/2009, -1/+1a real libertarian here! Stay out of my life, but make sure you keep civil rights away from those I find distasteful!
- thecoolestguy, on 07/22/2009, -2/+1--Do straight guys never engage in anal sex?---
I said 'tend to' not "always", or "exclusively". Straight guys only have anal sex with women. It is the recipient of anal sex that is at most risk of getting an HIV, so straight guys while being able to transmit HIV, are less likely to acquire, while homosexuals tend to have both a heightened risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV due to engaging in both receptive and insertive anal sex, leading to much higher HIV infection rates among homosexuals. - igyigyigy, on 07/21/2009, -2/+1I thought you *couldn't* use the same type of condom because normal condoms rip during anal sex?
Unless there's a way for homosexual men to have sex that doesn't involve anal... - thecoolestguy, on 07/21/2009, -5/+1NO THEY ARE VICTIMS. INTOLERANCE IS THE PROBLEM, NOT PERSONAL IRRESPONSIBILITY.
- Barackalypse, on 07/21/2009, -9/+4Doesn't this reverse over a decade of hearing how "HIV/AIDS isn't just a homosexual disease"? I'm thinking the meaning behind this is that homosexuals have been relegated to join the special victims class, which is where liberals ultimately place everyone they think needs their protection.
- Barackalypse, on 07/21/2009, -8/+3Its solid advice, since marriage requires a blood test before the certificate is issued, and anyone not infected at that point who doesn't use IV drugs or have sex outside of that marriage is unlikely to be exposed to the disease in any other fashion. HIV isn't easily spread outside of sharing needles or sex.
- maroger, on 07/21/2009, -7/+2Buried for more "aids/hiv" propaganda *****. Mbeki's inquiries were never answered. Condoms are not common sense. They are the intrusion of the medical industrial complex's money-making machine into the lives of a minority population that is psychologically vulnerable to questioning their actions. They are not sinful, they are not disease-causing.
- Barackalypse, on 07/21/2009, -9/+2Those men are hypocrites, not necessarily conservatives, since they were acting in a manner conservatives do not approve of, while at the same time criticizing that behavior.
- thecoolestguy, on 07/21/2009, -11/+3homosexuals are on average far more promiscuous than heterosexuals, and the type of sexual behavior they tend to engage in is far more dangerous (anal sex).
- Barackalypse, on 07/21/2009, -13/+2It IS a liberal issue, because liberals are the only ones making an issue out of it, owing partly to conservatives believing in personal responsibility and partly to the fact that a fair number of them view HIV as punishment for irresponsible behavior.
- iceba, on 07/21/2009, -17/+0AIDs is a proof that premarital and extramarital sex is not a right thing to do
- DavidNiven, on 07/21/2009, -24/+6If you want to get rid of HIV/AIDS, then don't have sex outside of marriage or use IV drugs. Such a strategy is free, works every time it is tried, and is so easy a liberal can do it.
