- Andronicus1717, on 10/12/2007, -20/+83Um actually the "barbarians' weren't circumsized, nor were the pagan romans. Circumcision is mainly a product of Jewish and Christian tradition, with secular appeal in various locations. Furthermore SammyJr, circumcision most typically takes place at infancy, and I think it's a little premature to call babies fools, they kinda have to earn that designation.
- mxfreak92, on 10/12/2007, -6/+60wear a god damn condom
- fnaqzna, on 10/12/2007, -16/+67You know what works even better than circumcision?
Condoms.
But what the hell... It's your child... mutilate or educate.
Which choice seems more humane? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+67Men are born this way for a Reason. Stop with the bs, leave boys how there were born, and meant to be.
- Onikun, on 10/12/2007, -9/+55Thats a stupid way to prevent HIV, thats like cutting off your breasts so you don't get breast cancer. Circumcision is mutilation anyway.
- schroduggity, on 10/12/2007, -8/+50this has got to be the absolute lamest flame war ever on digg
- mxfreak92, on 10/12/2007, -13/+48not to mention all the pleasure recepters that are lost

You are absolutely right. Penn and Teller had a great *****! piece on circumcision. Seems it has been taken off Google Video though. - Ruckgesicht, on 10/12/2007, -11/+41What a terrible practice. I figure that if my son wants to have part of his penis chopped off, he can do it when he becomes a legal adult and is capable in all respects of making such decisions for himself. But since I haven't mutilated myself in any way during my own tenure as a capable adult, I doubt anyone else would pratice anything so irrational when approaching the issue rationally.
Everyone has the freedom to be religious, but I think that right stops at their mutilation of helpless children. If parents today claimed that they were pulling off their kids' toe and fingernails no one would allow them to do it, so why do we allow them to do things like this? - Tazmaster, on 10/12/2007, -9/+38Hey guys! Cutting you penis off at the base can greatly reduce your chances of contracting any sexually transmitted diseases even more than circumcision. [/sarcasm]
Circumcision is fine for those who's religion encourages it.
However, it pisses me off to no end that doctors and nurses at hospitals encourage and, in some cases, pressure the baby's parents to have their infant boys circumcised for "health" concerns.
How about teaching young men what to do with their penises instead of mutilating it when they are babies! - BrainInAJar, on 10/12/2007, -10/+39removing the entire organ will cut HIV infection even more...
removing breasts will also reduce the breast cancer rate.
Doesn't matter if it decreases infection rate, it's still barbaric. Find another way - Steek, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34***** gets down in there cause maybe they dont clean down there its their fault, and condoms dont stay in place? where the hell did that come from iv never heard or had that problem.
- floejoe, on 10/12/2007, -5/+33I prefer uncircumcised, however I am circumcised myself, but I don't think it really matters to many women, at least not the ones that are not just a one-night stand wham bam thank you m'am.
I think men get too attached to their penises and find any perceived 'flaws' to be their own flaws. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+35@kushnud, if you cut your dick off there is 0 chance of penile cancer.
- ZachSullivan, on 10/12/2007, -10/+36How come it's a human rights violation when you circumcise a woman but it's a matter of course to do it to men? Why don't you let a boy turn at least 16 before they decide if they would like a chunk of their penis ripped off?
- quickgold192, on 10/12/2007, -7/+32"Circumcision & abstinence are both horrible tools at preventing STDs"
Actually, abstinence is probably the *best* tool at preventing STDs. It's just rarely used. - maiku00, on 10/12/2007, -8/+32@rompom
I know that I would never cut the skin off of my kid's penis. If they want to mutilate themselves, for whatever reason it is, they can do it when you are old enough to research the pros/cons and make a decision for themselves. I think it is absolutely barbaric that children have it done to them (as it is irreversable operation) when they don't even know whats going on or have any input into the decision. - PueSi, on 10/12/2007, -6/+29Circumcision is way overrated.
If you want to have less risk of getting HIV wear a condom, you don't have to peel your dick for that.
As for condoms not staying in place, i have never experienced any problems with my penis. - Onikun, on 10/12/2007, -8/+29I agree, if I ever have a son I'll let him decide when hes older, its not going to make a difference. People who say its a preventative measure don't know what they're talking about. You're supposed to clean it. Its like cutting your ears off so they won't accumulate wax.
- Klinky, on 10/12/2007, -14/+35W-T-F? Circumcision & abstinence are both horrible tools at preventing STDs. Note this study is in A-F-R-I-C-A. While it may be true that the risk of HIV transmission is reduced when someone is circumcised this shouldn't be much of an issue if someone is careful about their sexual partners & has decent hygiene. Also the fact is that while cutting the risk in half, the risk is still quite there. The odds of 1 in 2 or 500 in 1000 are not ones I'd risk taking. If, however, you have an entirely miseducated population that doesn't understand/care that having random unprotected sex with people in a very dense AIDs population is a bad idea, then circumcision may be valid as a preventative measure.
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -14/+34Does that statistic mean anything? Not as much as you might think.
Did they look at if people who were circumcised were more likely to come from an environment which would allow them to grow up more educated, and therefore be more likely to engage in risky behavior or take steps to mitigate some of the risk?
Did they take into account that circumcised men probably come from a more religious background and therefore *might* be less promiscuous?
Maybe for some reason circumcised men are more likely to masturbate instead of going out in search of some sweet lovin'.
The problem with these statistics is that they usually fail to look at the demographic of the people that have the different traits they are studying the relationship between. - RobTyree, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22I refuse to believe that a few million years of evolution is wrong, and that men should have been born without a foreskin. With proper care, there is absolutely no reason that uncircumcised men should be any more prone to infections, cancer, or any other illness. A preliminary finding of a 50% reduction is certainly interesting, but were questions regarding condom use, sexual activity, and hygene part of the study?
In fact, there are many cases where circumcision causes problems far more than it helps - for example, I have a nephew who will likely grow up with a slightly disfigured member that may require further surgery due to a careless doctor who got a bit aggressive during his circumcision.
If it were my kid, I'd much prefer to worry about cleaning frumunda cheese than the possibility that he could grow up with a damaged unit. If he wanted to lose 25% - 50% of the sensitivity of his tool just to look more like his friends in the locker room and have a greater risk of suffering from premature ejaculation problems be getting himself snipped, that's a decision I'd leave to him when he's old enough to make it.
If you want to get rid of AIDS in Africa, the answer is simple - educate the Africans to exercise proper hygiene and proper use of condoms. The implementation of that simple answer may not be easy, but it will work. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+29You couldn't learn to wash your dick and had to have it cut off instead?
- spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23"We're also born with appendices."
So should we remove that just after birth too? - ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+24"Did anyone else notice the WHO Director of HIV/AIDS Department is named "Kevin De *****""
No, but I did notice he happens to be a Dr De *****. - themarkshow, on 10/12/2007, -15/+31cut off your dick or get AIDs....idunno... either decision sucks.
- FunkyWitDaSysTm, on 10/12/2007, -5/+21the benefits of circumcision have only been nominal (make a difference) in countries lacking mass sanitation. if you keep it clean (ie, you bathe more than once every few months), you have nothing to worry about aside from a TINY (or not-so-tiny) inconvenience.
really. how hard is it to wipe it off a couple of times a day? i mean you pee at least that much, just take a bit of TP to it, and you;re good! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20The HIV/uncircumcised relationship was first noticed back in the mid eighties.
These studies simply confirm data that is already in hand.
The pro vs con of circumcision is a different matter. - Mugsleymug, on 10/12/2007, -16/+31maybe if i wanted to have an incredibly desensitised knob that i could clean with a wirebrush.
if you are scared of getting stuff stuck in your foreskin, have a ***** shower. - missflibbles, on 10/12/2007, -6/+21Even with a desensitized penis, a circumcised man is still capable of having an orgasm.
Women have the clitoris removed, as well as the vagina sewn up so it will be tighter for her future husband.
While I don't agree with male circumcision, female circumcision is much, much worse. - Jasruler, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19Yea, it is a very sloppy experiment, and in no way follows the scientific method.
- w0rd, on 10/12/2007, -4/+19You seem to be quite the expert on the uncircumcised penis. Not having one yourself obviously raises some questions...
- umfskibum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"I've never met a circumcised male who regrets it."
Well I don't see how they'd regret it, most guys are circumcised at birth and have no personal means of comparison. - Jasruler, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20This study is massively unscientific. IIRC from reading a more in-depth article about it, they basically just took a bunch of guys, recorded if they were circumcised/uncircumcised, and then let them run around for a period of time, and then recorded who had AIDS and who didn't.
In order for this study to really hold up they would have had to take a bunch of men who were both circumcised and uncircumcised, and subject them to samples of HIV, and a control. This, obviously, presents some mild ethical problems. - friedcalamari, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20Where did I leave that damn butcher’s knife? *runs to basement*
- AnteChronos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Joined within the last 24 hours with a name that could be construed as racist, and making disparaging comments toward an entire continent in a manner that *also* seems quite racist? Welcome to my preemptive block list.
- selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16 Most people are circumcised at an age when they have no choice though.
- karuberutsu, on 10/12/2007, -12/+25Raptor you are stupid as *****. A shot is not the same thing as chopping off the end of your dick. And circumcision only gained popularity because all the little christians thought it would help keep their kids from masturbating (hah, right).
The ONE AND ONLY reason you would ever need to cut your forsekin is phmosis (where it is too tight, never gets stretched enough through childhood and is too tight /painful to clean as an adult. Even then, there is a much minor operation that will loosen it a bit).
I've been cut at birth and it's pissed me off to this day. I would much rather have suffered a tight foreskin than have none at all. - manageMyRights, on 10/12/2007, -5/+18In the UK there is virtually no circumcision and a much lower AIDS rate than the US.
We know how to prevent AIDS: abstinence, outer-course, condoms, getting tested, and sticking with the same partner. Cutting off part of my penis.... no thanks. - SammyJr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Option 3: Wear a ***** condom.
Option 4: Monogamy - spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Can't speak for the rest of the world, but girls in Europe just don't give a crap
- manageMyRights, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17Your kids should also have a labectomy (removal of the loose tissue between the chin and nose including the lips). It prevents disease and makes cleaning your teeth easier.
http://hcsoftware.sourceforge.net/jason-rohrer/writing/nonfiction/labectomy/ - umfskibum, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Jesus, I HATE the argument that being uncut is "gross" and "***** gets down there." It's like any other part of your body - if you have the skin there, you learn how to clean yourself. If a guy were to suddenly go from cut to uncut, maybe there would be some issues with training yourself to keep it clean. However, as a practical matter, those that have the skin generally should know how to clean themselves down there.
And condoms won't stay in place? Where did that come from? Condoms should stay on unless you're buying a size too big, they don't slide off the skin on the end any more than off the skin on the rest of a penis.
Finally, it should go without saying that there are a ton of nicknames for cut and uncut *****. - Onikun, on 10/12/2007, -9/+20No i'm not a chick. I got my berry and twig and the tip of my twig is intact.
- selrahc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11You just have to find girls that haven't seen so many penises. My girlfriend doesn't care, but then I guess shes not really with me just for the penis.
- tendulkarteja, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@SammyJr : "Wear a ***** condom"
Curiosity: Are there other types of condoms?
