- WiseWeasel, on 10/16/2007, -0/+30Or maybe (more likely) it actually works the other way around, and they've found a particular strain of bacteria that thrives in the gut of people who eat a lot of chocolate...
- BroncoKid, on 10/16/2007, -0/+22I blame my smoking addiction on my lung bacteria. Bastards.
- aavellPX, on 10/16/2007, -0/+18Research funded by Nestlé.... and Nestlé sells chocolate, among other things.
- wush, on 10/15/2007, -0/+15..the bacteria were quoted as saying
- thesmrt12004, on 10/16/2007, -0/+11I'll trade you some of my spinach bacteria for some of your chocolate bacteria
- Randude, on 10/13/2007, -0/+10They studied 11 people! That hardly sounds statistically valid.
- allaboutdatiki, on 10/17/2007, -1/+9Chocolate is a gift from above.
- Jennyd6, on 10/14/2007, -0/+7They have an interest in why people crave chocolate. Maybe they can harvest these bacteria colonies and implant them in other products that people (who don't like chocolate) crave. A few years from now, anyone that was indifferent to chocolate suddenly craves it all the time. And we can all thank Nestle.
Hey, stranger things have happened. - ICSU, on 10/16/2007, -2/+8Oh, the American (Western) culture of blaming everything else but yourself..
- treeromeo, on 10/13/2007, -0/+6A study by the Swiss, eh?
- acdcfanbill, on 10/16/2007, -0/+6Yea, I punched myself in the gut because of this.. I'lll show those bastards down there!
- mal1964, on 10/13/2007, -0/+5Endorphins rules all fun time
- kedohmen, on 10/13/2007, -0/+4I knew it wasn't my fault I needed that Chocolate goodness!
"I'm not fat, my bacteria is."
The ladies will buy it, right? - adiggct, on 10/14/2007, -0/+3who wants some bacteria?...
- Ramble, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3I think it might be more likely that more chocolate creates a different selection pressure inside your gut which helps other colonies of bacteria flourish.
- acrodev, on 10/13/2007, -2/+5There is more non-homosapien genetic information present in your gut than in the homosapien genome. What we consider a person is as much a result of their microflora, literally trillions of cells, in conjunction with an ape-like creature. Without their digestive help, the apes would not be such accomplished omnivores. Interestingly, the appendix was recently posited to serve the purpose of storing a "backup" of the gut bacteria to "reboot" the digestive system after significant illnesses.
- Axim, on 10/13/2007, -0/+3correlation doesn't imply causation, on top of the fact that this study is .. chocolate specific? wouldn't it be cocoa that is the active ingredient here, meaning a wide variety of foods would potentially have this effect? or maybe this is another way to defer responsibility..
what next -- oh wait chocolate is an aphrodisiac? so that's how i got that girl pregnant! - M0b1u5, on 10/15/2007, -0/+2No - blame your big fat stupid brain. If you can't overcome the lamest excuse ever, then you are a poor excuse for a human being.
- insanebrain, on 10/13/2007, -3/+5Shure blame something else. . instead of yourself.
- ArrakisDune, on 10/13/2007, -0/+2Great. Now fat people who sit on their arse all day have another thing to blame it on.
- HayString, on 10/14/2007, -0/+2I'll do that! Got any other vegetable or fruit bacteria? I could use some.
- 11Heather, on 10/13/2007, -3/+4The bactaria made me do it! Sounds like an...interesting theory.
- sfpfc, on 10/13/2007, -2/+3being big boned will no longer be an excuse for obesity, now its bacteria
- Lboogie, on 10/14/2007, -0/+1Great observation (saw that too). You always have to be cautious of the sponsors of research as they usually have a vested interest in the outcome (in this case "some people have to have chocolate for optimal health"). Much as I'd like this finding to be true, I really question its validity.
- DogGunn, on 10/13/2007, -1/+2I'm pretty sure I like chocolate because it tastes good on my tongue, not because of my guts... Who the ***** thought up that *****?
- mrjeffery, on 10/13/2007, -2/+3After a long period of diet and exercise, ive gone from 182 lbs down to 150. For the past few weeks though i've craved chocolate like never before literally buying 2 - 3 bars at a time and eating them over the course of a normal day. These findings about the chocolate lovers (low cholesterol etc) would actually explain a lot in my case anyway.
Or im just the greedy chocolate feasting ***** i've always been - bmartin, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Buried for subjective religious mumbo-jumbo.
- bmartin, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1This is propaganda by Nestle. Don't you think it's a bit suspicious that they funded a study involving 11 people, turning up "evidence" that people can blame something other than themselves for their chocolate addiction?
- Indyanna, on 10/14/2007, -4/+5Junk science. Buried.
- Jennyd6, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1The metabolic types are tied to the system, as a whole. The different strains of bacteria affect the system in different ways. I would like to see which caused which. The chocolate caused the increase in the different bacteria colony or the different bacteria colony caused the cravings for chocolate. Either way, this small study doesn't prove much of anything.
- knobtwiddler, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1physorg... hmpf
whats becoming of these consumer scientific zines lately? they publish any ***** thing. - sirloin, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1jesus no wonder america is doing so porly in science, THEY ARE CLAIMIGN A LINK, this is the first step, quit trying to out sciecne people smarter than you, seciously. DId you read why they didnt pick women?
Did you read on how they will do thi again with women?
no
down vote for you then. - gcnaddict, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1I doubt punching yourself in the gut will cure you of gonorrhea.
- sirloin, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1wow you a scientists???
No sorry but when i hear correlation is not causation, which seems to be the only science some people learn, it sounds to me like they are suggesting their is zero basis for further study. IE no their competely wrong because it just corrolates. sort of like the rise in cig smoking corrolated to a dramtic rise in lung cancer.
and as for flawed conclusions
"Study finds that people are programmed to love chocolate
For the first time, scientists have linked the all-too-human preference for a food — chocolate — to a specific, chemical signature that may be programmed into the metabolic system and is detectable by laboratory test"
I'll point out the big wards. "linked" and "may" both words fit nicely in your corrolation staement.
so they arent claiming causation, they are claiming corrolation.
so learn to use the oft misused sciecne phrase correctly. - UltraPenguinX, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Researcher 1: "I wonder why people like chocolate so much..."
Researcher 2: "Because it tastes good?"
Researcher 1: "No, that can't be it. Let's use SCIENCE!"
Researcher 2: "Isn't that a needless waste of money?"
Researcher : "And how!" - sirloin, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1yeah and these are caused by a simular chemical to that which is found in cannabis.
chocolate is very high in anandamides, that atatches itself to the same receptors as cannabis
which isnt a cuasation but could explain why the depressed want chocolate and why chocolate makes you feel better.
and I'm not talking hersheys, even the new sepcial reserve, which while getting better, is NOT CHOCOLATE. - inactive, on 10/13/2007, -0/+1Yeah! Digg that....
I wonder if that same correlation is present in addictive personality types....like me..... - solemnraven, on 10/13/2007, -1/+1dupe from wired see: http://news.wired.com/dynamic/stories/D/DIET_CHOCO ...
- flowaus, on 10/14/2007, -3/+3I wash myself with a rag on a stick...
- Jennyd6, on 10/13/2007, -0/+011 chocolate lovers and 11 indifferent to chocolate. Still that's only 22 people. Not a large sample. It's also tainted by "who" they studied. All subjects were men.
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -1/+1Dark or Milk chocolate?
- Jennyd6, on 10/13/2007, -0/+0Right. If there's any truth to this study, the next question is: what came first, the chocolate or the bacteria?
- shameera, on 10/15/2007, -0/+0quite true to some extent........
- PathDaemon, on 10/13/2007, -1/+1Yeah, submitters shouldn't try to reinterpret their articles. Bacteria's barely mentioned here... it's an article about different metabolic types.
- livingwater, on 10/15/2007, -0/+0http://www.sunfood.com/cgi-bin/order/index.cgi?id= ...
- alais, on 10/13/2007, -1/+1Guts?
- inactive, on 10/13/2007, -1/+1Dark please, and a latte to go with.....
- rhabd0mancer, on 10/17/2007, -4/+3Rush Limbaugh has a vast community of Vienna sausages in his gut.
- kalkin, on 10/13/2007, -2/+1agreed. it would be too easy if chocolate were addictive because it tasted great. some people seem to look for answers where there are no questions...
- ItsBadBeingGood, on 10/13/2007, -1/+0this one ate a lot of chocolate too :)
