- ClassicJBC, on 10/12/2007, -5/+89The biggest impact that people don't grasp from organics is where they come from. If it's a local or domestic grower, then great, but if you have to ship some fine organic Chilean grapes, then imagine the extra CO2 and pollution from the transport of those organics. If you can buy local organic (e.g., from co-ops), then that's your best bet. Otherwise, it's a toss up. Just my two cents.
- drewpost, on 10/12/2007, -5/+75"chipotle's is owned by macdonald's. enough said."
Not anymore. They were when they started up but they no longer are. They serve delicious food at good prices. They also get very involved in the communities they have stores in. IE: The Chipotle by my high school partnered with our canned food drive and gave a free burrito to anyone who brought in 3 cans. They started about 4 years ago and have been doing it every year since! They bring in thousands of cans and people get some good food in return! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -19/+79chipotle is the food of gods
- mateo60, on 10/12/2007, -5/+55Ok, stop your bitching everyone. You're making a very bold statement by saying that "real" sit-down Mexican food tastes better than "fast-food". No *****. We all know that. Someone was complaining about "Americanized" Tex-Mex. Guess what, "Texas" is in America, Tex-Mex is Americanized Mexican food.
In Texas, Chipotle is a fantastic restaurant if you're needing something fast. There are sit-down places that are better obviously, but compared to a Taco bell or Taco Cabanna? No question. Chipotle is absolutely healthier than virtually any mainstream fast food restaurant as well. You can get a burrito with beans, rice, chicken, salsa and guacamole that will keep you full for half of the day, however that's a lot of calories because it's a big-ass burrito.
I no longer live in Texas and I miss Chipotle often, especially if I want something fast. - burtonbe, on 10/12/2007, -3/+49Here's some interesting excerpts:
"Today, all of the pork Chipotle sells in its burritos and tacos comes from hogs raised naturally on family farms, without antibiotics or hormones."
Sweet. I didn't know that.
"...while Chipotle uses fresh [ingredients], almost none of its produce is organic. It's simply too expensive..."
That's the problem. If Chipotle goes organic, it can't really be a traditional fast food restaurant (read: cheap food). In spite of that, I think it's a great idea. - PleaseBeSerious, on 10/12/2007, -2/+38"spun off from McDonald's (MCD) last October after eight years as a subsidiary"
You could bother reading the article before commenting - drewpost, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36I LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! I wish they would bring one here to London. We have every nationality of food here except for decent Mexican restraunts
- jhnewt, on 10/12/2007, -16/+43@drewpost
I pity whoever believes that Chipotle is mexican food. Real mexican food is far better. - xrisnothing, on 10/12/2007, -10/+33People don't seem to get that organic foods aren't just meant to be good for you, but also for the environment. Read: pesticide free. Those that care not to ingest poison aren't the market fast food is going after, though I'll agree that it would be a step in the right direction environmentally.
When you pay for organic food, you're paying for peace of mind. It's about a lifestyle, even if most Americans seem to think that it's just for yuppie, rich hippies (oxymoron, I know.) - Surreal, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23No actually, you are all incorrect, McDonald's used to own a majority interest in Chipotle. Full divestment of that stock was completed in October of 2006.
- DiggsOnlyNeoCon, on 10/12/2007, -4/+26Just 'cause it's got integrity doesn't mean you have to eat the WHOLE burrito... Most of those things weigh in around 1200 calories...
- OverThere, on 10/12/2007, -4/+21While their burritos are amazing.. I really can't stand to eat there more than 2~3 times a year. soo damn good though.
13" Flour Tortilla 330
Rice 240
Black Beans 130

Sour cream 120
= 1274 calories
http://www.chipotle.com/images/nutrition.pdf - Sparkster185, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18I went on a streak in college where I ate Chipotle every day for 26 days in a row.
It's also not that bad (calorie-wise) considering that can be your only meal for the day. - All4not, on 10/12/2007, -37/+52Organic food is a rip off. A relative of mine owned a store in CA for a few years and sold it off for a nice profit. He still doesn't use anything organic to this day and the only good thing he says about it is that it was a good profit. Another person I know that is high up in a large food company that sells both organic and non-organic doesn't use organic, because it's higher priced and it's not any better for you.
- TimDigg, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Am I the only one who's realized that perhaps they don't like Mexican food?
I love places like Chipotle, Qdoba, California Tortilla etc etc
but yet whenever I try authentic places, I'm left like....this is bland as hell...and thrice the price - Miyazaki, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16Chipotle's Chicken Burrito (with black beans, rice, cheese, and salsa) weighs in at nearly 1,000 calories and 12 grams of saturated fat.
Chipotle's Vegetarian Burrito (with black beans, rice, cheese, guacamole, and salsa) weighs over a pound and provides 1,120 calories and three-quarters of a day's worth of saturated fat (14 grams).
Chipotle's Barbacoa Burrito (with shredded beef, pinto beans, rice, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, and salsa) hits nearly 1,300 calories and three-quarters of a day's worth of saturated fat. That's the equivalent of a Quarter Pounder, a large order of fries, and a large Coke. - Ollin, on 10/12/2007, -11/+23This is coming from mexican........Chipotle is not real mexican food. Mexican burritos don't typically use white rice in them and also don't taste anything like the ones they offer in "Chipotle".
If you live in a big city you are better off finding a little family run mexican resturant if you are looking for authentic tasting food. - Greyhaven7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Chipotle RULES! I love new-born-baby-sized burritos!
This is the only food that I have (literally) driven for 2 hours to get. When we got there, we told the guy at the counter (happened to be the manager) and he gave us the food on the house.
I REALLY want one down near where I live (Newport News, VA area). I used to live in Northern VA where there are several.
Anyone who hasn't tried Chipotle's food, you need to, it really is that good. - DyDx, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15So what? If that is one of two meals for the day (myself and most college-aged people I know only have two "real" meals per day), it's not that bad. And the fat content isn't ridiculous like burgers, I believe -- at least if you forgo the cheese and sour cream. Most of the calories come from carbs and protein. And it's a LOT of protein! Great for people who like to work out.
Overall, they are not horrible for you, but any more than one a week is pushing it. They certainly aren't Subway.
Regardless, they are some of the best-tasting burritos I've ever had, so I can forgive them for being slightly unhealthy. Mmmmm... soo glad one opened by campus this winter :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12When I can't handle a whole burrito I get their soft tacos. Much less filling, just as tasty.
Sadly, eating in moderation is anathema to the American diet. - Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"chipotle's is owned by macdonald's. enough said."
They were owned by McDonalds, as much as Microsoft Owns Apple, they invested in them when they needed some help/money to grow, that was all, it was never OWNED by them.
Its called "Investing", Enough Said. - lebe0024, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Or, cut the burrito in half and eat the other half later. This only works if you don't get lettuce, because lettuce + microwave = yuck.
- keane, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11The original Freebirds (at UCSB) is also the original "large burrito" restaurant
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freebirds_World_Burrito - iammzac, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12I love chipotle, I usually go once a week. Their burritos are to die for. I wish more 'fast food' restaurants were like Chipotle.
- thewump, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8That's not the whole picture. Yes, they had ownership of the company, but it was a very strategic move. Steve was still CEO and called all the shots, but during the major growth phase of the business had the massive advantage of McDonalds buying power on everything from soda to locations. It was a very smart move that allowed Chipotle to grow from the handful of locations in Denver to where they are today.
- FearlessFreep, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9"Chipotle's Barbacoa Burrito "
Far as I know, 'barbacoa' traditionally comes from cow's head. Is that true here? - DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10"Real mexican food is far better."
Well, tastier maybe, because it's full of lard. - Hypermarkalan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I live in San Antonio. There are authentic Mexican food restaurants here. Mama Margie's, Cha-Chos, Blanco Cafe, Mi Tierra, La Fogata, Las Palapas, Salsalito's, and even the taco carts that appear all around town after the sun goes down.
Doesn't change the fact that I still like Chipotle and Freebirds. No, they aren't "traditional" Mexican food, but truly, neither are any of the other restaurants I just mentioned. They're Tex-Mex. I also like Taco Cabana and Taco Bell, and El Pollo Loco ain't bad either.
Southerners, stop being so damn snobby.
But London Mexican food does suck. Went to a place by Covent Gardens, the Texas Embassy, and some other place near Piccadilly Circus. All of'em stink. They make you pay for chips and hot sauce. WTF? - Sparkster185, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@Roryking: So because I attended college and enjoy Chipotle I'm a "fratboy"? That makes a lot of sense.
- signal15, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Now if only Chipotle would remove the trans fats (partially hydrogenated oil) from their soft tortillas.
- fugitiveALiEN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6McDonalds did not INVENT Chipotle, they invested in Chipotle until last year when they sold their stock. McDonalds out of the picture. Quit looking for irony or hyporisy.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Usually when you roll something this good, it's illegal
- M15anthrope, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8The Nurtrition calculator at ChipotleFan.com helped me change from Burrito to Burrito Bol. Also cut back on the guac, cheese, and sour cream and you have a relatively healthy meal.
http://chipotlefan.com/index.php?id=nutrition_calculator - Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6"Barbacoa generally refers to meats or a whole sheep slow cooked over an open fire, or more traditionally, in a pit covered with leaves, although the interpretation is loose, and in the present day and in some cases may refer to meat that was steamed until tender. Barbacoa de cabeza is a specialty of slow cooked cow head that arose in the ranching lands of northern Mexico after the Spanish conquest. Except for cochinita pibil, one of the common characteristics of Mexican barbacoa is that marinades are not used and sauces are not applied until the meat is fully cooked (for examples of Mexican marinades, see carne de chango and carne al pastor). Pork cooked in this manner is generally referred to as carnitas rather than barbacoa."
- shosterman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Here is a good article on when to and not to buy organic. If it doesn't load just google the title.
"When Buying Organic Makes Sense -- and When It Doesn't"

I do like Chipotle, and eat there a couple times a month, but I don't go there looking for good Mexican food. Just like I don't go to McDonald's when I want a good burger. - smackhero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@drmangrum:
"If you want mexican food, go find a restaurant with a mexican cooking."
you mean, like benihana? - robotplague, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Glad to hear they spun off from it. Really great food, but to be honest I always had the McDonald's thing looming in the back of my head whenever I ate there.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@texpundit
It lasts longer because it's sold in sealed, paper cartons. Milk goes bad faster in plastic jugs. The reason Horizon uses paper is that you're already paying a premium, might as well give you the best wrapper too. - DiggsOnlyNeoCon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6DyDx:
Stats for a chicken burrito, no cheese, sour cream, or guac:
1034 calories, 322 of them from fat
36 g of fat
3868 mg of sodium
Plus, your ideas of nutrition are totally off. If you get a ton all at once and only eat twice a day, it's terrible for you. That's because at that time, more gets turned into fat, even if your whole day is 2000-2500 calories. That's why a lot of diets say eat in moderation 5 or 6 times a day.
I love Chipotle, but it is honestly one of the most deceptively unhealthy things. - heaintheavy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7The organic movement is being co opted by corporations that realize Americans will pay more for something labeled "organic". I mean, how the hell can you have an "organic" TV dinner? Doesn't that kind of defeat the purpose?
The word organic doesn't mean much these days, I'm afraid. - Otto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Rory: Hey, way to be a total dick. Blocked!
- PleaseBeSerious, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13I would seriously reconsider your priorities.
- culbeda, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Hmm... a fast-food chained owned by McDonalds. Interesting.
The more important issue on the pork is that it sounds like they may not be using pork from CAFOs. Anyone have clarification on that?
(CAFO = Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation = A multi-story, high-density pig farm that produces so much concentrated waste that they pollute local rivers, etc..) - ChaserHimself, on 10/12/2007, -14/+18Freebirds is sooooo much better. Diggers in Texas know what I'm talking about.
- DarthTurducken, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Freebirds (Texas-only) is also good, with more variety.
http://www.freebirds.com/ - twfurballs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I ate there once a few months ago, when it opened up here in issaquah, wa - decent food, but wat I found interesting was the vegetarian burrito - good way of tapping into the vegan market
- tdogg241, on 10/12/2007, -27/+31I'd rather eat pesticides than hormones/antibiotics. At least the pesticides will kill all the pests inside me.
- antifreze, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7a better place than Chipotle is Moe's Grill (owned by Hooters). The food tastes better and you have an actual selection to choose from.
- bknollenberg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Glad to see so many of you are reading The Economist and passing off your 'think of how far your Chilean grapes have to travel' nonsense as original.
