- Humptydank, on 10/26/2009, -0/+40And Jesus said unto him, "What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?"
The blind man said unto him, "Lord, I ask thee to use a vector, a genetically engineered adeno-associated virus, to carry a normal version of the gene, called RPE65 into my retina, that I might receive my sight."
And Jesus said unto him, "Go thy way; thy RPE65, which once was mutated into LCA2, hath been made whole."
And immediately he said "Yea verily, there have been significant improvements in my nystagmus and I can now play soccer," and followed Jesus in the way. - reptarman, on 10/26/2009, -1/+30For those who say this is bad because of its use of cells/genes:
I find it strange that the God who imbued us with logic, reason, and creativity would disapprove of us using these gifts. - Genecalypse, on 10/26/2009, -1/+23-_- + gene therapy = O_O
- sanagalrc, on 10/25/2009, -0/+20O_O
- rossisdead, on 10/26/2009, -0/+13That's ***** awesome
- Chooxo, on 10/26/2009, -0/+11Amazing genes, how sweet the science!
- JCPahl, on 10/26/2009, -0/+10Science makes me happy.
- Humptydank, on 10/26/2009, -1/+10Jesus is YOUR Messiah.
- reptarman, on 10/26/2009, -2/+10Jesus would not disapprove because he restored the blind's vision as well.
- DigitalisAkujin, on 10/26/2009, -3/+10Even if you're on the science side of the God vs Science debate why are you feeding the trolls?
When an atheist starts to argue the internals of the Bible with someone religious they have already ceded ground by giving the book the legitimacy of being part of the discussion.
That's point number one. Point number two is that we should not be having this discussion at all. The real question here is "How do we rush this treatment to those that need it?", not "Would the good reverend approve?"
-2 cents - reptarman, on 10/26/2009, -0/+6from ._. -------to------ 0_0
- inactive, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3just... :)
- krymson, on 10/26/2009, -1/+4Jesus would approve.
- Curiomime, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3I hope gene therapy starts to grow exponentially and becomes more widely available for more people. I have a genetic disorder which effects my muscles, making me fatique easily and have low vision. Mitochondrial Myopathy.
Unfortunately I'm not aware of any resources by which I can try such a thing. - Rockkybox, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3That is pretty incredible, looks like viruses came in handy after all
- cfuse, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2Jesus would not disapprove because he wasn't a major ***** like some of his so-called followers are.
- Naumadd, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2I'd have to agree with you but we can't deny that part of the process of "rushing this treatment to those that need it" is navigating the barriers or obstacles put into place by those who rail against "playing god" blah blah blah. I'd give a great deal if we could have a reasonable culture where that wasn't necessary. Unfortunately, these are real issues and need discussed until human discourse begins to progress away from such ubiquitous irrational thinking that takes away from the significance of these achievements.
- iheartbakon, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2Hmmmm, nothing interesting to see here. *puts dark glasses back on*
- reptarman, on 10/26/2009, -3/+5Be creative and don't *///////////////* things.
For example:
MSNBC reports more men turning to alcohol due to improved vision. One-night stands decrease as less blind go to bars. - Agatha415, on 11/23/2009, -0/+1This is great news
http://all-about-lapband.com - Humptydank, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Wrong blind man. That references the healing of Bartimaeus. You're thinking of the blind man of Bethsaida.
- appleseed1234, on 10/26/2009, -1/+2It's no use, they make God's words work for them.
- michelsonmorley, on 10/26/2009, -3/+4One of the most interesting accounts of Jesus is when he had to heal a blind man twice. The man said that he was blind from birth, and Jesus put his hands on him. The man then said that he saw "men like trees", which means he couldn't tell the difference between a person and a tree. Then Jesus put his hands on him again and the man saw like normal people. This is cool because people with cataracts who have them removed after say the third or fourth month after birth will never see normally - not because they can't see but because they didn't develop the neural pathways. But if you once were able to see, lose your sight, then have it restored again (like these people) then your visual recognition will still mostly be there.
- FLarsen, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1"Now, after a single injection of genes that produce light-sensitive pigments in the back of his eye, he sits in front with classmates and participates in class without extra help."
This makes me wonder. Would it be possible to improve a healthy person's vision using the same or a similar method? Increasing the eye's resolution would be awesome. - scyphozoa, on 10/26/2009, -6/+6Jesus was a gene therapist??
- appleseed1234, on 10/26/2009, -2/+2Hey Beavis *uhh-huhuh*, he said genital *uhh-huhuh*.
- o1hc, on 10/26/2009, -1/+1angels - hey, God? i think Science did it again.
God - DOH!!! - ThatNeilDude, on 10/26/2009, -2/+2Could somebody cross "Beat God at His own game" off the list?
Thanks! - iXam, on 10/26/2009, -1/+1Does that make him illegally blind?
- wexmajor, on 10/26/2009, -8/+6better ban it just in case Jesus might disapprove
- Tddupre, on 10/26/2009, -3/+1inb4 obama is Your messiah
- exitsec, on 10/26/2009, -2/+0So, just how is the process of synthesizing this virus from some spit and dirt any less miraculous than how it was initially described in the bible?
- KingBroseph, on 10/26/2009, -6/+4I wasn't making a joke about congenital blindness being cured or whatever.
I was hinting at a pun where 'congenital' becomes 'genital'.
Basically the idea that a penis doesn't know the vagina it is partaking intercourse with may belong to a fat chick.
Sorry for the misunderstanding.
Have a good day. - reptarman, on 10/26/2009, -8/+3Jesus IS the Messiah.
