- badqat, on 12/05/2007, -0/+19Ever notice how everything continually changes...I think it all boils down to these studies being full of crap!
- zyl0x, on 12/05/2007, -0/+17So what? Does everything have to cure something to be eaten these days?
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+11You hit it on the nail right there. It's the death of science. Not because science itself is wrong but because the ressources alocated to promote scientific researchers are controlled by people who don't understand science.
There are millions and millions of dollars being invested in research that is flawed from the start. Simply because the researchers' hypothesis is a fallacy or because no scientific method is employed. But that doesn't prevent Mr. X, with his degree in administration, to refuse a valid research to allocate funds to something he likes but is inherently flawed.
And then you have another group of scientist who are hired to waste their time, proving idiotic theories wrong, theories and studies that shouldn't even be acceptable to anyone with a little common sense. There's an immense waste of brains and ressources in the scientific community. - Stemnin, on 12/05/2007, -0/+11I eat carrots from time to time, my coworkers think it's because i'm confusing them with cheetos.
- Pahtcub, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9How about just being healthy and not nutrient deprived?
- redmaxx, on 12/05/2007, -3/+12You mean I'm orange for nothing now?!?!
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+8I eat burgers and have no cancer! Therefore burgers cure cancer!!!!1
- bipher, on 12/05/2007, -0/+7Spot on. Most "science" these days is commissioned to prove a particular and pre-disposed point of view; as opposed to just finding something out and publishing the results. Sad.
- wakananda, on 12/05/2007, -3/+10Those who have explored juicing, raw food diet, and so forth, don't need your double-bind biases. We know.
There's a war on against any kind of nutritional healing, and it's being waged by the Pharmaceutical Industry. This kind of hit piece must be evaluated in context. - emanpa68, on 12/05/2007, -0/+6I'm pretty sure carrots are more beneficial in general then fastfood or candy?
- bobartig, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Headline is misleading. The research is demonstrating that individual micronutrient supplements don't have the same benefit as eating vegetables. The reason for this is that vegetables, through their development and evolution, contain not only essential micronutrients, but other enzymes and compounds that make those nutrients beneficial. Stripping out just the ß-carotene and sticking it in a starch pill may not have the same effect.
So, ß-carotene plus support compounds found in salad = good health. ß-carotene taken by itself = no clinical benefit.
Nutrition isn't just about meeting your vitamin quotas, it has to be approached more "holistically". The body needs to be in good working order to absorb nutrients, and the food needs to be nutritious and digestible. (Incidentally, raw food does not always maximize the availability of micronutrients within food, so it goes in the other direction in terms of silly dogma). - buddamus, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Get green hair you can work for Willy Wonker
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Also a myth. Carrots are a good source vitamin A which are essential for your eyes but they can't improve your vision. Vitamin A just prevents some ocular illnesses caused by... Vitamin A deficiencies.
- spyd3rweb, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6I can't wait for them to say vegetables and vitamins/minerals aren't beneficial to your health.
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Broccoli does.
- SirFoxx, on 12/05/2007, -1/+5All of the studies that show the benefits of Vitamin E have used the natural gamma version. All studies that try to say that Vit. E doesn't work, use the synthetic alpha version. Most Vitamin E on the market is the synthetic alpha version or even its it natural they still use the alpha version . If you want the benefits from vitamin E, either buy a natural gamma E supplement or buy a natural mixed tocopherol and toctrienol vitamin E product that has gamma as the largest part of the supplement. Plus always take with a good mulit-vitamin, vitamin C(mineral ascorbates or ascorbyl palmitate), selenium(yeast derived), R-ALA or KR-ALA(need to extra biotin with this as ALA depletes biotin) and at least 9 grams a day of fish oil. Add a good diet and you have yourself in good shape for the following years.
- shawnanigans, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4I know they cure hunger, that's good enough for me.
- sockpuppets, on 12/05/2007, -2/+6...and that's how I became a rabbit herder.
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4ding ding ding, You sir, are correct. Water cures dehydration ya know. H20, the wonder drug.
- sb66, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4Beta Carotene supplements actually INCREASE the risk of cancer for smokers and drinkers:

- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -3/+6carrots are PEOPLE!
- spyd3rweb, on 12/05/2007, -2/+5Oh wait they just did:
"Despite findings of more recent clinical studies, much of public & many health professionals continue to rely on earlier less rigorous studies to support beliefs that certain foods (or their component parts) promote health." - inactive, on 12/05/2007, -2/+5Well you know anything that cures something is a drug, right?/sar They are trying to label vitamins as drugs and regulate them.
- RedForLife, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4It's all about broccoli now..
- darthchaosrspw, on 12/05/2007, -2/+5Downplaying the health benefits of carrots...this is something you'd expect from some Rockefeller thinktank pushing the Codex Alimentarius agenda.
- HalfGiraffe, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4Be sure to read the comment at the bottom of the article re. synthetic vs. natural vitamins.
Its also worth noting that Linus Pauling was ridiculed for proposing megadoses of vitamin C as a cancer treatment and his theory was supposedly "disproved" by studies that used only oral doses (despite Pauling's insistence that IV administration was critical). Recently they've gone back to Pauling's method and found that vitamin C via IV does work. - inactive, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3I knew it Veggies are bad :<
Twinkies cure cancer and stupidity, terminally ;) - vguard, on 12/06/2007, -1/+4Sounds like more propaganda from Big Pharma.
- chaosium, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3The problem isn't really with Science, but science "journalism", which is generally run by people just as dumb if not dumber than the rest of the newsroom.
- SirFoxx, on 12/10/2007, -0/+3They studies that showed this, only had the participants use Beta-carotene, no vitamins or other anti-oxidants whatsoever. By itself, as soon as the beta-carotene gave up an electron to take out an oxidant, it became one itself. The studies really showed that taking 1 antioxidant without a wide range wasn't wise. If taken with a good multi vitamin(or included in the multi) along with R-ALA or KR-ALA, the risk would have gone down not up. R-ALA or KR-ALA are really good antioxidants in the sense that it has 38 electrons to give and can recharge Vitamin C and E, among others, over and over thereby increasing the antioxidant effect many times.
- atomic811, on 12/06/2007, -1/+4high fructose corn syrup, disodium phosphate, bht, tbhq, polysorbate 80..........yeah carrots are bad and no point in getting vitamin E I get it I should just eat processed foods because they are just as good for me....food has nothing to do with cancer.....whatever
- chaosium, on 12/05/2007, -2/+5"Those who have explored juicing, raw food diet, and so forth, don't need your double-bind biases" Ah, new agers. Such a gullible, stupid, and lucrative market.
- darthchaosrspw, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3Smoking ANYTHING is bad for you. :-p
- darthchaosrspw, on 12/06/2007, -0/+3Yeah........"plants feel pain".I think I'll start up PETB (People for the Ethical Treatment of Botanicals). :-p
/sarcasm - hiikeeba, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3Apparently we're all supposed to run around in circles screaming "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!"
- Patrikc325, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2If carrots were good enough for the R.A.F. They are good enough for me!!
- Humptydank, on 12/06/2007, -1/+3@Wakananda: Wow, you're like a little piece of the Dark Ages just wandered into the room. Neat.
@Neoporcupine: As you say, observational studies can't be trusted, and you made a big leap when you suddenly said "we don't know why carrots protect you from cancer." There's no evidence that they do, because observational studies do not rise to the level of evidence. Without double-blind trials the claim can't and shouldn't be made. The human mind is too easily fooled when it comes to these things to ever trust observational trials.
Do I think carrots are bad for you, or even not good for you? Heck no. But you simply can't make a specific claim like "protect you from cancer" without a scientific trial.
I'll extend you moral of the story only a little bit when I say mine is: Eat lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, drink lots of water, get lots of exercise, try to keep you stress levels as low as possible, and if you get seriously ill, find out what the most rigorously scientifically tested treatment is -- whether it's from the Pharmaceutical Industry or not, and use it. - chaosium, on 12/08/2007, -0/+2"That's why they got rid of the Hippocratic oath to do no harm."
You really have no idea what you're takling about.
"That's why sick people are forced to chose between bankruptcy or death. "
HAHAHHHAA you're the one Ron Paul fan for UHC? - vguard, on 12/07/2007, -1/+3The drug companies have our best interest at heart. That's why they're for profit entities. That's why they got rid of the Hippocratic oath to do no harm. That's why sick people are forced to chose between bankruptcy or death. Its all because they love us! They'd never lie to protect their profits.
- chaosium, on 12/07/2007, -0/+2Sounds like someone is masking his ignorance with tinfoil.
- Dotnetsky, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2"It takes some time to turn around a scientific community". Yeah. When they get around to actually doing something about global warming, the next Little Ice Age will already be here.
- fungsayuk, on 07/09/2008, -0/+1You should be brave enough to fight against the cancer not the carrots
http://tongue-ulcers.com - darthchaosrspw, on 12/06/2007, -1/+2Well that's a perfect reason to stop smoking and drinking. :)
- gettarat, on 04/16/2008, -0/+1Nothing eill cure cancer, it's a pity, really
http://aphonesite.com - interspective, on 12/07/2007, -0/+1Couldn't agree more!
