- dorkus999, on 10/10/2007, -4/+41Please learn to use the hyphen. It's "Cancer-killing fruit".
- AnteChronos, on 10/10/2007, -5/+20Whoosh. Since I'm being buried, I'll go ahead and kill the joke by explaining it. "Cancer killing fruit" is ambiguous. It can be interpreted as a fruit that kills cancer, or a statement that cancer is killing fruit. Also, I prefer oranges to tangerines. Shall I now clarify to you why chickens seem so fond of crossing roads?
- AnteChronos, on 10/10/2007, -18/+32Cancer killing fruit?! Which fruit is it? If it's something that I enjoy eating, I'd like to go out and buy some before it's all gone. I mean, I didn't even know fruit could *get* cancer. Huh? RTFA, you say? Ohhh, I see, it's just tangerines. Pffft. The cancer can have them, for all I care.
- MasterThief117, on 10/10/2007, -3/+16I hate to say it, but this is going to be shot down yet again just like every other "cure" for cancer.
- Kamael, on 10/10/2007, -5/+17They don't want a "cure". The best they can hope is to find a treatment that allows you to live with cancer, buying their meds forever...
Going back to the article, it's a little vague...it'll be more interesting if they clear up for what types of cancer this would be useful... - HalfGiraffe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+10There are lots of compounds, natural and unnatural, that kill cancer in the test tube. Lots that kill cancer in mice. Not many that kill cancer inside people, at least not without killing the patient.
- d00by, on 10/10/2007, -2/+11AnteChronos is right, kind of. Cancer Killing Fruit means that cancer is kililng fruit. Cancer-Killing Fruit means a fruit that kills cancer.
- 11Heather, on 10/10/2007, -4/+13How long until a drug company makes this natural ingredient synthetically? If they do, will they sell it, considering how many billions of dollars they're raking in for not having a cure to cancer?
- btgoss, on 10/10/2007, -0/+9That is the problem. There are so many types of cancer, what works for one is useless for another. As a cancer survivor I hope it works for mine, but would be happy if it works for any.
- slowth, on 10/10/2007, -2/+9I know a girl who reminds me of cher. She's always changing the color of her hair. She don't use nothing that ya buy at the store. She likes her hair to be real orange.
She uses tangerines - revenge7, on 10/10/2007, -2/+8"Fruit Killing Cancer" would lead to the same problems.
- dwright99, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5One word for you: Pomegranate
- AtHomeBoy2000, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5With how fast our technology is growing and all the research that is going, I feel there is a real legit chance of finding a cure for cancer within the next 50 years. Maybe not 100% of all cancers and probably never nothing we can do to "prevent" some cancers, but a VERY effective treatment might be possible.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -2/+7Don't worry bro, that's the first thing I thought when I read the title. How about, "Fruit Killing Cancer" or "Fruit Kills Cancer," instead?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+6The discoverers have already set up their own company.
PS: Many drugs sold are made from natural ingredients that have their active compounds purified. It is cheaper than synthesizing an entirely new molecule. - egroeggnik, on 10/10/2007, -3/+7Yeah, some of us caught (and appreciated) the humor in it.
Digging you up for the joke, and for explaining it without being difficult about it. - jasoninoakland, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5Fascinating. Resveratrol, another phytoalexin used by grapes, peanuts and other plants to ward off fungal attacks, has reputed anti-cancer benefits too. It is also modified by a P450 enzyme produced in the liver.
- t0mmy, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Good luck with the tinfoil suit to compliment your hat.
- SomaSynth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4The problem is the cost of trials and the whole approval process. It's hard to find a company willing to fund all this when at that point any other company can enter the market without going through this. Patents cannot be obtained on natural molecules.
- androothebear, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6for a second i thought this said "Cancerous Killer Fruit" and i threw the apple i was eating at my wall.
THANKS DIGG! - barfooz, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5If you say Cancer-killing fruit, it's completely unambiguous : ) Part of the confusion stems from people expecting headlines to have verbs in them...
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5*****, there goes the tangerine supply,
- Crossmenjeff, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3i think a lot of people don't understand what cancer is.
- egroeggnik, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Yeah, just like that DCA recently discovered at the U of Alberta to cure cancer as well.
Naturally occurring cures get overlooked and even actively shot down because drug companies can't patent them. It's not about the cure, it's about the money. - JacNet, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Lol, i read the title thinking that an apple had gotten cancer or something.
- tehpwnrate, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4Good point :) I guess "Fruit Extract Kills Cancer Cells" would work pretty well.
- quickgold192, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4It's the fruit-study that's being killed by cancer
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3Actually that is false. Patents can be placed on innovative uses of natural products. So you can't patent ginseng when it is used as a tea but you can patent a chemical compound found in it if has never been used for a specific treatment before.
Besides, that's what university research is for. - inactive, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3ASA/Aspirin, Acetaminophen, ibuprofen, odansetron and hundreds of cancer medicines, antibiotics etc. are no longer under patent...why are they making these drugs since they're losing Pharma money?
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4This is not a cure per say. Many compounds have cancer killing properties but when you test it in people...it tends to harm them as well.
- JoeWix, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3When I was a little kid, my grandmother used to make candied orange peels. They were wonderful. I suppose you could adapt the recipes to tangerines. I did a quick search, and found no shortage of recipes. I don't know if the cooking process would change the effectiveness of the peels, but they are quite enjoyable when prepared as a candy/treat.
- harrymcwealth, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Do you even understand how complex cancer is? Do honestly think people are so evil that they'd hide the cure to cancer if there was one because of "profits"? Hell no! If Pfizer found a cure-all to cancer they'd shout it out on the rooftop and give it out like candy to cancer patients. A company is made up of people -- they want to help others (albeit with a profit). They don't want people to die early if they can help it. There's nobody that evil that would block the cure to cancer.
- GreenxGiraffe, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2RTFA
- inactive, on 10/22/2007, -2/+4DCA is not a cure for cancer. It is a compound with some cancer killing properties. It has major side-effect and it is actively being studied by medical researchers. Stop with the conspiracy theory BS.
You don't need a patent to make a profit from a drug. Why the hell do people make aspirin? - elementop, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2No, no, no. It's about a fruit that kills by causing cancer!
- inactive, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Funny, haha or funny, weird?
- maxpower2911, on 10/10/2007, -2/+4Since when can cancer kill fruit? Is it some super version of normal cancer?
- ChibiJosh, on 10/22/2007, -0/+2In order to begin selling a drug, companies have to spend millions of dollars and years on research and clinical tests before they can put it on the market. A patent means that they're the only ones that can make they drug for as long as the patent exists. This makes it so they can recoup the losses from the research and clinical study phases. Once the patent runs out though, generic drug companies can begin to produce the same drug at a dramatically lower cost.
Without a patent, you can't have that phase where the drug company can make back the money from research thus making it uneconomical to pursue spending millions on research. - WaldoX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2add avacados to the list
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3you mean acetylsalicylic acid? I prefer tylen -- I mean acetaminophen
- Kamael, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh please, stop with the "healthy living" BS...yes, it can prevent/improve some diseases, but cancer is a very complex and dangerous disease...
My mom was a very healthy person, didn't smoke, exercised everyday, eat good food...and one day, bang, a massive brain tumor revealed. The worst kind possible. 3 months later, she passed away. Believe me when I say that NOTHING could be done about it.
Check how many people have survived glioblastoma, and when you found one, check the reasons (hint: most of them used experimental treatments, heavy drug combos, etc.) - zardoz73, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1There seems to be a news story like this once every couple of weeks now. These "cures" just seem to work in a petri dish, or in animals, but in humans--for various reasons--they don't work. Science news writers are about the laziest writers around because they know most people don't know enough science to call out their ***** stories.
- demizer, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=4312930190281243507&q=world+without+cancer&total=167&start=0&num=50&so=0&type=search&plindex=0
- capiCrimm, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1yes, but those companies also get the benifit of a brand name from the exclusive period. So while generics are cheaper, it takes some extra work to see if they exist.
- mahdaeng, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Same here! Good stuff!
- The_Dude, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'll be registering infectedtangerinepeelextract.com very shortly, so don't even try.
- Victorioso, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1The primary cause of cancer was discovered in 1931 by Doctor Otto Warburg. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for his work .
