- Xaevier, on 07/11/2009, -0/+16It may slow their mental decline but it is ruiner of lives among the young when grandma beats you while playing mario kart.
- Encephalon, on 07/11/2009, -0/+13You can throw this theory out the window if they ever start playing World of Warcraft.
- Metsys, on 07/11/2009, -0/+13Soon we'll have elderly people going around stealing cars and beating hookers to death to get their money back
- JakeBC, on 07/11/2009, -0/+10I had a witty comment, but I can't remember what it was...
- homesickalien, on 07/11/2009, -0/+10Back in my day we had a controller with a stick and 1 button and thats the way it was and we liked it.
- nick041, on 07/11/2009, -0/+7My 70 year old grandpa beat me 10 times in a row at Ready 2 Rumble for the Dreamcast back in the day. Still not over that. And he's was visiting from Romania. He had no idea such a thing even existed! Hell he held the controller backwards at first.
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+7My grandmother is nearing 80, and she has all the last generation consoles (PS2, Xbox and Gamecube)
Crash Bandicot is no match for her... perseverance. :) She isn't that good, but she has a lot of time to spare!
As for her cognitive prowess... meh, I dunno. It's not like if I had multiple grannies to compare her with, but I'd be happy to be half as sharp as she is when I get to her age. - alienufo, on 07/11/2009, -0/+6my grandma loves to play Max Payne games. Not even kidding.
- lacrimosa2008, on 07/11/2009, -1/+6Because of the question mark in the headline I knew there's no scientific proof in the article or anything I couldn't answer by myself with just common sense.
- adventureindia, on 07/11/2009, -1/+6I have never thought in this direction but seen the results on my cousin brother...
- mrogi, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5Video games slow mental decline in the elderly.
Video games accelerate mental decline in the young.
This is proof God has a sense of humor. - jaxter2010, on 07/11/2009, -0/+5I can totally see my grandfather talking ***** on Halo.
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4then don't suck.
- Xaevier, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4Reminds me of when my 40 something year old family friend beat everyone at my graduation party at Soul Caliber 2 simply by playing assassin and spamming A as fast as he could.
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4we should use old people to harvest gold on wow. then we'll sell it on ebay and make all teh real monies. genius
- inactive, on 07/11/2009, -1/+5On the other hand, it might be better for the elderly to play MMORPG's. It would keep them in touch with younger generations and allows for socializing whenever they feel like it. Most of them just sit around all day anyways
- WTFNuggets, on 07/11/2009, -0/+4Hmm. I'm going to get a headstart on this.
- loopyloopy, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3I predict more snipers in TF2

- Hellicus, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1It's just that videogames keep your mind occupied.
Kids are developing their skills and interests on their early years...
Old people also need something to do... I bet that grandpa gamers live longer and happier than the kind of grandpas that live their elder years watching "the wheel of fortune" and eating frozen dinners. - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Good luck getting grandma to sit down with a video game.
- kramer733, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1Wouldn't doing math and actually doing real home work yield better results than video games?
- RiperSnifle, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Make more games like Mafia that take place when they were young.
- nugz85, on 07/11/2009, -1/+2not if they are playing the Wii
- thejackyl, on 07/11/2009, -0/+1sick
- lucidgoo, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1I have a similar situation. My Grandma loves her PS2 and plays it more than her Wii. Loves Crash Bandicoot too! I'm not sure if it's beyond many other 80 year olds, but she is definitely still very sharp.
- karenprime, on 07/30/2009, -0/+0This is because when people are engaged in gaming, their brain works full time in strategizing and processing various information at a much faster rate in the hopes of winning the game. This causes constant firing of neurons in the brain, new dendrites are formed, memory is enhanced. Because of these active mental tasks, the brain becomes sharper. Kudos to old people who play games!
- dent42, on 07/11/2009, -1/+1"Video games accelerate mental decline in the young."
[citation needed] - shnurok89, on 07/11/2009, -2/+2people just react better when they are getting attention
elderly people are so used to the idea that they are going to be alone that when they get to be in all these social situations via a study group or by playing the wii with their grandkids that it really lifts their spirits and gives them hope
something to live for
so in a way, video games might help, but only because that is the medium in which they reconnect with people
might make them feel young again also
but thats just my opinion... and I'm no professional by far.
Edit: not ALL elderly people are alone or even feel alone, but im willing to bet that the people in the studies were, why else would they sign up for a study about video games... old people hate video games
also, i was just going on the natural fear that humans tend to have
about being alone in life - acknotSW, on 07/12/2009, -0/+0LOL, that's actually something I've considered. I've always planned, when I retire and start getting older then dirt, to go back and try to relearn all the calculus, Diff EQ, and other math that I'm going to forget between the time I graduated and the time I retire.
- acknotSW, on 07/12/2009, -0/+0My mother, father, and aunt are all in their mid to late 50's and love their computers. My parents just bought a wii in fact. They may not have the same ability to adapt to quick changes in technolegy that I have, but they are a lot better off then my grandparents are.
I don't care what age you are, sitting in front of a TV for 12 hours a day is not good for you, but when you are on the internet for that same time period, your mind is engaged. You are learning and interacting with the world. I expect that my generation will have a lot less trouble with our aging parents then my parents are having with theirs. - acknotSW, on 07/12/2009, -0/+0/now get off my lawn
- acknotSW, on 07/12/2009, -0/+0Just to be more specific, most of them sit around all day watching TV. No matter what age you are, that can't be good for you.
- nick041, on 07/11/2009, -4/+3They'll still suck ass at driving & they'll also continue to buy ***** Crown Vic's. ***** Ford. ***** Ford.
- HarborTwo, on 07/11/2009, -2/+1I wish my grandpa was still alive today so that he could have some good ol fashioned murdering fun in GTAIV
I can only imagine what he would have thought playing that game. - evgeniy13, on 07/11/2009, -4/+3There is no use of stupid video games!! Give me an anti-aging pill or something!!
