- saikhan, on 10/12/2007, -6/+192Thanks *****, now my newfound energy is being drained by your pessimism.
- b0wl0fud0n, on 10/12/2007, -4/+116Hey, the placebo effect works on me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+94I'm feeling stronger....more powerful...
HOLY CRAP I'M HOVERING ABOVE THE GROUND!! - peregoriot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+83Where's a good "brainwave" file that keeps you in an orgasmic state?
- jus1haz2, on 10/12/2007, -4/+80Is it a screamer?
- zephc, on 10/12/2007, -2/+63This sound file has powered me to OVER 9000!!!!!!!!!!!!
- trghpy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46it made me want to pee... so i guess its sorta like caffeine...
- andyrobo60, on 10/12/2007, -2/+41now all we need is beer in a sound file
- rogerjones, on 10/12/2007, -24/+63This is basically pseudoscience, any effect you feel is probably just the placebo effect.
Sorry to anyone that takes this stuff at face value. - soogy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27HYPNOTOAD
- windwaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25I've already had a pot of coffee and I don't want to overdose by mixing sound with the drip.
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -10/+32Ah c'mon Nialgriff, don't be so grumpy, it was a good joke =)
- PilotPrecise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+20It should be pointed out that there is plenty of evidence that placeobo effects can be beneficial, especially when they are related to feelings - emotions, pain, etc.
But yes, that page is a portal into a skeptic's hellhole, complete with links to other "brainwave entrainment" sites with all sorts of commercial junk. Sad because its dirt gets swept onto legitimate studies. - TheFr00n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21How it works:
If you listen to a sound with an alpha or theta wave (really low) oscillation for a while, your brain starts to sync with it. Research indicates (google it) that different frequencies induce different states - there are a number of products on the market that help you "study better" or "sleep better" using these techniques.
However, in all cases, it requires a listening session of 30-40 minutes to get any benefit because the brain takes a while to sync up to the audio oscillation - our brains don't like being told what to do.
Now, because it's nearly impossible to make a 6hz tone come out of speaker (you'd just blow out the cone if you tried), the low sounds are created by using frequency offsets: for example, you play a 100hz tone in the left ear, and a 106hz tone in the right ear. This creates a 6hz discrepancy which, when listening in stereo, sounds like a weird, swirling, helicopter kinda thing. This is why it doesn't work on speakers - you have to use headphones.
I don't know if any of you ever used Cool Edit Pro? This software had a plugin that created these kinds of sounds for you. - vraa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21If you're interested in this kind of stuff, google for binaural sounds and what not.
If I remember right, basically it's using different frequencies (by additive and subtractive methods to reach those really low-system level (haha) frequencies) to influence your brain into some resontat... I think I've lost it.
But in anycase, it's really interesting stuff. I don't know if it was psychological effects but I used to be big on this stuff a few months ago. I felt as if it helped depending on what frequencies were used. I'd sleep for an hour and it would feel literally as if I slept for an entire night. It was great!
After a few weeks of doing that though, I really crashed and I felt sluggish like none other. The body truly does need sleep! :o :( - blahtastic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+20Is it just me or does it just sound like this is several different "nature sounds" cd's played all at the same time? That and maybe the sound of a very tiny helicopter in the background...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19This one goes to 11.
- grnarrow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17Somone tell Mythbusters to investigate this one.
- wafflez, on 10/12/2007, -7/+23lol i remember the whole 'brown-noise' segment on braniac once where they got a guy to crap himself with a certain low-pitched frequency.
- Dustyb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+161) Make a sound file called coffee replacement.
2) Distribute over the internet(s)
3) ?????
4) World domination! - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -13/+26You shouldn't be getting buried.. "brainwave music" is a scam that's been around for decades, but it has been getting more prominent the past 5 years. Total *****.
- mstrike, on 10/12/2007, -8/+21My hands won't stop shaking, holy crap this really works, brb running a marathon!

The concept is weirdly simple. Play one frequency sound in one ear, and play another frequency in the other ear offset by the an amount that is equal to the frequency you want your brain to averagely operate at. You wear headphones so that the sound doesn't just bleed over. Higher frequencies tends to be more excited, lower tends to be more relaxed. If you go too far apart or too similar it's unlikely an affect will occur. There are quite a few different programs that let you create these sound files. - WaterDragon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12...and you don't even have a lawn!
- CapeKid, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Dugg so that someone can post a link to a science article going into more depth.
- testerburner, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14hahaha. Yeah, it probably works based on how much you believe in it.
- Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12I have a sudden urge to mow the lawn.
- Fracture98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Absolutely true, but the placebo effect is still a real effect. The down side of the placebo effect is that it's usually used to scam folks out of their money. This things free, so what's the harm? If you find it seems to work for you, party on.
If nothing else, it'd drown out all the people at work that won't shut the ***** up. I find that very tiring. - FizixMan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9LOL
http://youtube.com/watch?v=TBtpyeLxVkI - nnnr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I must thank this sound file for helping me level up today in WoW.
- triska, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Tried it, listened to it, now I'm back from a 2 hour sleep after listening to it.
Reeeeal caffeinating, right. - Sotong84, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Vigor +10
You have gained 20 exp points! - snlildude87, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Well, if it really does work, you can combine this with Citrus (the alarm clock) for a wake-up call.
- dggeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6It worked for me, only because of my apprehension at it being a screamer.
- zorpscorp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6yep, you can get some software to create these types of frequencies... I found one called BrainWave Generator, you can google to find thier site and a demo, and some p2p methods can get you the full one. it'll let you choose a desired frequency from presets like "alertness" or "deep sleep", or make your own. you can also add background noises like a stream or thunder so it's not some random screeching in your ears. it's pretty interesting stuff, and I too have noticed effects from it.
- gboodhoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6a tiny unmarked black helicopter one supposes...
- crashflow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6if your employees are lethargic, forget coffee music. Its time to set the tiger loose among the cubicles. Nothing like a healthy dose of running and unexpected predation to get their blood running.
- IdanE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6There's a big difference between believing that something you did affects you in a certain way, and believing in an OS.
I have a cousin who had to take his drivers exam, and he was extremely stressed. My grandfather told him that he had just the solution, and gave him a tiny little white pill, and told him that it was an anti-anxiety pill. My cousin swallowed it up and aced the exam. The next day, he found out that his "pill" was an artificial sweetener.
Something work better if you let them, others only work in your mind. If it works - it doesn't really matter if it was chemically or psychologically induced - quasipalm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6My coffee in a sound file is Dieselboy.
- cualcrees, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6must...kill....president....must...kill...president....
- snowpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Wait, this isn't going to hypnotise me so I start clucking every time I hear a bell is it?
- Nymo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5There's Going To Be A Horror Movie Based Off This..
You Just Watch.. - R3j3ct, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5you're supposed to wear headphones... there is a distinct left and right channel to this that does have an effect on... well the effects
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12Woah, turned it up a little so I could hear the background noise in it a bit more and it seems to be working a little bit. Almost seems as if it keeps getting faster, but it really isn't (I don't think).
- YesMoreLight, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7They invented this along time ago. Its called Pink Floyd's The Wall.
- deadlikeoscar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Okay, so if I have cancer and unknowingly take placebo pills when I think they are cancer fighting drugs and my cancer miraculously goes away why would I complain that I got conned into taking a placebo?
- mikester540, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hey, it actually worked for me... I just woke up and it definitely raised my heart rate and made me more alert! I was very pessimistic...
- Farik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Did you even listen to either of the files? They are completely different.
