- Sublex, on 04/02/2009, -0/+6Anyone else have this weird eye thing, where they don't like it when people touch or go near their eyes?
- gatorfree, on 04/02/2009, -0/+5My God, man. Drilling holes in his head isn't the answer.
- dazparkour, on 04/02/2009, -0/+5Where are pictures of these modern and elegant divices?
- marx2k, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4Needed more pictures
- AudioLoveMagic, on 04/02/2009, -1/+5Just legalize weed already.
- CrazedLeper, on 04/02/2009, -0/+4What if the question is: "How can we get holes in his head?"
- saerko, on 04/02/2009, -1/+4Yeah, my Wife has that. It's some sort of weird phobia where she can't even watch TV that has images of eyes close up.
- christoast, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3Another thing, one of the very few good byproducts of war is medical discovery.
- stellamaris, on 04/02/2009, -0/+3Surgeon: You're probably just brushing your teeth too much.
- SparkKnot, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2uhhh Sublex forgot the /s at the end
- dazparkour, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2If there are ill people with money, there's money in it.
If those people don't have money, start a charity that gets money from the general public but only buys drugs from your drug company.
I get told I'm too cynical. - iletumi, on 04/02/2009, -1/+3 o_ʘ؎ ᴾᵒᵏᵉ
- kharlowe, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2I did.
Until I had to have injections in my eye.
Got over it very quickly. - slugpellet63, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2Great news, but wouldn't it be even better if the medical community came up with new treatments just because they were motivated to cure people, rather than looking for diseases, the curing of which would lead to $$$ (or £££ if you like).
I wonder how many diseases and ailments are out there that could be cured, only there's no money in it? - CrazedLeper, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2Yes, but I don't think it's weird.
- Polycarp87, on 04/03/2009, -0/+2I suppose our disagreement boils down to us discussing very different systems. In the US hospitals are mostly private, and so economics is more closely linked to the medicine. Here someone is responsible for balancing a budget at the end of the day, while in the UK the government can theoretically just increase the amount of money they give to the NHS.
The article focused on research being done by a corporation, in other words their intent is to patent a superior and novel method or tools for treatment and then using their patent to make their money back (which they reinvest in further research). Obviously this system fails if there is not a profit to be made, but if a profit is made then more novel treatments are discovered which ultimately help patients. In the US there is government-funded research as well, but I really have no idea of the relative scale of private and public efforts. - lunachique, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2I don't have a phobia per se, but eyes definitely freak me out. I think the worst was when my husband made a silicone mold of my head and I had my eyes closed when he made the cast. He decided he wanted to give the completed mold glastic eyes. That meant slitting open the lids and using an Xacto knife to carve out the silicone while I held open the lids with a pair of needle nose pliers. The glastic eyeballs made a horrifying "plock" noise as he pulled them in and out to center them.
- Polycarp87, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2You are nieve. How is the "medical community" supposed to fund this research? Out of their own pockets? Most hospitals operate at a loss and are tax exempt by the government so they don't go out of business. How are they supposed to take care of patients if they are bankrolling research just because it warms their hearts? Maybe instead of criticizing others for not giving you should take a look at how much you donate to research causes.
If the medical community did not make money then there would be no medical community. Doctors and PhD researchers all have student loans and families to take care of. - slugpellet63, on 04/02/2009, -0/+2Maybe I am naive; I used to think that people went into the medical profession primarily to cure people - maybe because they had some sort of calling.
Here in the UK the purpose of hospitals is not to make a profit - it is to cure people.
There is plenty of publicly funded open research - maybe this is what the world needs more of - because I was referring to more than just the USA's medic sector. - Kaegro, on 04/17/2009, -0/+1ya, apparently Hitler was the "leader" in open heart surgery. He would get his doctors to tie down jews and POW's and cut them open, fiddle around in there and see what would happen.
The man was a monster but history is ***** up like that. - inactive, on 04/02/2009, -0/+1yeah
