- RadiantBeing, on 10/12/2007, -3/+55People always ignore the federal funding going to adult and cord blood stem cell research. This liver tissue was grown from stem cells derived from cord blood and has immediate medical applications in the testing of new drugs.
"the tissue was created from blood taken from babies' umbilical cords just a few minutes after birth." - darkdaedra, on 10/12/2007, -3/+51Sweet. This research has one clear implication - I am free to drink a lot more alcohol. As are you, especially if you are that hot chick in my metaphysics class.
- thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -3/+40@unknamed AND wizbor
Wow unknamed, you just made a huge generalization about wizbor's use of "whacko left" by telling him to turn down Rush.
Gross(in all meanings of the word) generalizations are rampant in Wing-nut(either side) political attacks. Next time, why don't ya'll both drop the diatribe and debate the facts.
Stem Cell Research shows promise: GOOD!
Cells came from non-destructive means: AWESOME!
Has immediate application to real work: HOT DAMN!
We can reduce testing on animals: PETA should love it! and I guess animals too
Future elimination of Donation questions: Good! (weight off the mind of the bereaved)
Instead of turning this into a freaking political name calling mud-fest, let's celebrate a WONDERFUL achievement in medical science! - unknamed, on 10/12/2007, -15/+50People who use phrases like "wacko left" make me sad for the human race....... next time turn down Rush so you can concentrate on what you're typing, maybe it'll make some sense.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+45Your post makes no sense.
It leads me to believe you're an idiot and you don't know a single thing about this subject. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+43Someone already succeeded in growing an entire human in a laboratory -- Ann Coulter certainly isn't the child of human parents.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27Everyone is a hot chick in metaphysics class if you drink enough kid.
- themastersb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26Next thing you know they'll be growing entire people inside women.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26The scientist's got the idea from Dragon Ball Z, I totaly know what you mean.
- kooft, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22In other news, fava bean futures skyrocket
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20A great day for science.
- Ramble, on 10/12/2007, -3/+20You're an idiot.
- VorpalK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Keith Richards will be pleased.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+20Ahh i see, since livers regenerate, it is impossible for them to have created one from stem cells.
and when doctors transplant a liver in a person, they were just lying.. they just let the paitent sit in the hospital until his liver comes back. And those that died waiting for a liver were just faking it to get out of taxes. What a scam i am glad you unconvered it. - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -11/+27It has another clear implication. Due to the lack of funding by our Republican government, we have given the revolutionary development of this science field to Britain instead of the US,
- NeilieN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Except this was not done with embryonic stem cells, and it was also done in collaboration with American scientists...
Is it too much to ask for you to be at least a little informed, or read the article before you post? - awm4, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15And a nice Chianti
- echinatl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12There are hot chicks in metaphysics classes?
- johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Cool - first, step, the liver. Next step - steak!
- gruk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12after all this time people still don't seem to understand the difference or don't want to know.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12Have another, drinky. You big drink.
- geometry, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13The thing I don't understand is what's the difference between throwing out unused eggs or using them for research? Either way, in your eyes they're dying right?
- schabrat14, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14haha thats what i was thinking! More alchohol!!!
- MatthewTheRaven, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@EricCiccone: please read the article more carefully. We're talking about stem cells recovered from umbilical cord blood, not embryonic stem cells.
Nobody is against stem cell research in general. There are people who are against a specific subset of that research that involves embryos. There is no federal funding ban against research in adult stem cells or umbilical cord stem cells.
I'm not making an argument one way or the other here, but I'm just saying that it behooves people to be educated in the subject that they're arguing about. - chicksdigme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9This is awesome news. Hopefully technology continues to advance and eliminate human sufferings and deaths.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12Stem Cells From Umbelical Cords > Stem Cells From Fetus'
- Lane, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10to the delight of drinkers everywhere!
- airship, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Make all the jokes you want about heavy drinking. But there are other liver diseases besides those caused by alchohol. My uncle died 8 years ago from jaundice. A new liver would have saved his life. This is a great development.
- elhaf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8What if we're all really just hot chicks in your metaphysics class?
- roguepirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8This is totally going to kill black market prices.
- awm4, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11We can I start pre-ordering my replacement liver.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8They need to start working on growing artificial brains for transplant, there has been an epidemic of massive brain failures in the last several years.
- Koosebane, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8It's just amazing how people can take a positive advancement such as this one and turn it into an advancement of a political agenda in a totally different category. Embryonic stem cells had NOTHING to do with this story.
Embryonic stem cell research and its funding, as well as taking the opportunity to crab about and blame your least favorite political party is OFF TOPIC and lessens the impact of this breakthrough in medicine.
Gawd, I hate politics. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Just wait til launch day and go to Ebay... they'll be cheaper than PS3s
Wow, sorry, I have been reading gaming news too much... - thcobbs, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Can you see the advertising campaigns for beer now?
Drink X number of cases and get 10% off a liver replacement! - deim0s, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9@Desolite
There's a fine line between pulling off a sarcastic joke and looking like an idiot. A line you have no idea how to walk. - EricCiccone, on 10/12/2007, -12/+17Look at all these advancements that American scientists are going to miss out on, all because Bush wanted to appease his moron Evangelical base and ban stem cell research.
Those who don't support stem cell research, you're killing those who have diseases that will be cured by the research. - drunkenoaf, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10I'm submitting your comment to Engrish.com
WTF? - kalladorn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9First of all, your asking to be buried shows the lack of confidence in your own argument. Secondly, when you state a donor organism "dying", you're stating the obvious.
Look, thousands of my cells grow and die everyday and it's a part of me, but am I really dead or committing "harm" to myself. What if I jerk off into a cup for research? I think I "killed" quite a lot of living organisms. Please look into more viable arguments than being selective of those that has some sort of prelude into dogma. - ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nazis and their mysterious experiments..
- n00854180t, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Everyone is digging ScornForSega down because Rush Limbaugh is a scumbag racist druggy and deserves to die. XD
Also, people that thing embryos == humans are just *no*. - CapnMarko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's Halloween man ..... gotta dig anything that involves growing human organs, or night of the living dead cell research .... I think the scientists are really just today's witches and they want the embryonic stem cells as a cover to drink the blood of unborn babes to increase their powers of this so-called science .... must be witches we should burn them ...
- netsui, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5OMG!!!1!!11!!. This is ungodly! They are tampering with the work of GOD!!!11!1!!!!11111!!! EVIL! DEVIL!!111. Evil evolution believing atheists!
/sarcasm - fiji5555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Okay can't resist using the old Monty Python line from The Meaning Of Life...."We've come for your liver"....."But I'm still using it!"
- shefwed82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg19225754.500-stem-cell-insulin-offers-hope-to-type-1-diabetics.html
There you go. Embryonic stem cells. You can stop with your arguments that nothing has come from that now. Thanks. - NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm normally on the George W Hatter band wagon but geez. People seem to just comment without having a clue.
- ZenMojo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5What is this...cirrhosis you talk about?
- lechatron, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Drink up, we'll make more!
- chhuparustam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2'entire organs' like, I don't know...a liver?
- NinjaBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Such as yourself?
