- TheCatsPants, on 08/19/2008, -7/+78As a brit I can say that the article just looks like sensationalist nonsense to me. Don't believe everything you read.
- explnx, on 04/27/2009, -3/+62Chill out, people. They don't want to take away regular fatties. Think "bed sores". Think "skin grafted to couch". Any parent who keeps bringing food to a kid like that may as well be feeding them cyanide.
- ilovelegos, on 08/18/2008, -6/+61Witches like to fatten kids up. Maybe this is a witch hunt. Yeah it totally is a witch hunt.
- WordsnCollision, on 08/19/2008, -8/+62Why not just levy a "fat tax" based on each family's total weight instead? The gov't will make a "ton" of dough and families will have a clear impetus to watch what they eat.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 08/19/2008, -5/+56As a person who was an obese child, I fully support this. Letting your kid get fat is like letting it smoke or do heroin and is damaging to it's overall mental and physical health. It's negligence in its most pure form.
- jgubbe, on 08/18/2008, -4/+39WTF. That's screwed you can't fatten them up for the upcoming depression your lazy and irresponsible generation caused.
- dvavasour, on 08/19/2008, -2/+33The Independent has been turning into the Daily Mail for some time now.
- Fighter4rent, on 08/19/2008, -1/+32wait are you suggesting that an newspaper is more interested in attention grabbing head lines than presenting the real story. surely not
- needlesurfer, on 08/19/2008, -4/+34Actually, I agree
Child obesity IS child abuse, sorry for all those who think obesity is trivial but it is not, it is not trivial on adult and on children it is actually dangerous, it will modify hormone secretion to a point where permanent condition can arise.
If you are so irresponsible that you think a child is a talking doll, your child should be removed from you. You are raising a human being to prepare him to be a decent human being, a human being that will be able to face life, letting him go obese is a proof you can't fullfill your role.
You think obesity is a personnal choice, so is smoking and so is taking drug and I can tell you that fat people have way much of a negative impact on society than drug users and cigarette smokers. - ChayD, on 08/19/2008, -7/+36England is an extremely frightening place to live, the government have CCTV surveillance in every home, all phone conversations are recorded and att internet traffic is monitored, even our public restroom stalls have CCTV in. The police are all armed with AK-47s, and do not require a warrant to lock you up for the rest of your life if they so choose. Even railway ticket inspectors carry tasers. All citizens and even foreign nationals are required to have RFID implanted at birth or upon arrival in the country. RFID scanners are to be found in every single publically accessible place, so basically all of your movements are tracked from birth till death. Crime is rife, and it's not safe to walk down the street even in daylight. The air is so foggy and polluted that it's impossible to see more than 100 yards in front of you even on a good day.It is cold and wet pretty much constantly and the sun hasn't shone in over fifty years. Televisual entertainment is government provided and consists of only four channels of propaganda, free speech is outlawed.
Actually that's all ***** as is most of the sensationalist crap you read about the UK. In truth it's no worse than the US. - kevdotbadger, on 08/19/2008, -1/+27There goes my brother. Awesome.
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -1/+261. This was on the front page already.
2. It was inaccurate then, and it still is -"Britain" is not threatening to take anybody's kid. - The Local Government Association (LGA) is a lobbying group. NOT the government.
3. 90% of diggers fail at rational thought. - warriorscot, on 08/19/2008, -5/+22If you beat your kids most countries take them away, if you don't feed them most countries take your kids away, the same should go for letting 4 and 5 year olds get so fat they have heart attacks. It's child abuse and at best plain neglect. People who can't raise kids properly should not get to raise children it is that simple, children can't stand up for themselves somebody else has to do it.
I wouldn't like to live in a country where we would standby and let a parent kill their children, and this is what we are talking about legislation brought about by children dying of obesity before they even start school. If freedom is standing buy and letting children die then you can keep your ***** freedom. - DivineMonkey, on 08/19/2008, -5/+21At least the UK doesn't commit acts of terror on their own people.
Oh wait... - gavinhudson, on 08/19/2008, -13/+29That's an interesting solution. Messed up, but maybe it'd save the kid's life?
- todamax, on 08/19/2008, -2/+18just imagine at the place where they keep all the fat kids... must be like a buffet for witch
- hangman16, on 08/19/2008, -8/+23Except for the massive network of CCTV cameras with facial recognition capabilities. Something around 2.5 million of them. That scares me a little.
- Gerz1219, on 08/19/2008, -7/+22A fatter population is less productive and costs more to care for medically, so society has a vested interest in a fitter population. The issue of medical costs is obviously more pronounced in a country with universal healthcare, in which the government's outlays are directly proportioned with the population's waistline -- although I would argue that even in a country with a purely free market healthcare system, a fatter population costs everyone about the same amount in the form of higher premiums being distributed among everyone with insurance.
I think taking kids away from parents is way too restrictive, but that doesn't mean the government shouldn't try to do anything to stop the obesity epidemic. It is different from other issues of personal choice because it affects everyone. - sockpuppets, on 08/19/2008, -11/+25Unless you're talking about teeth.
- xero69, on 08/19/2008, -8/+21How about requiring a license to breed? Then you could screen out the parents who would be likely to damage their own children.
- colorwindows, on 08/19/2008, -0/+13last nite hooligans overturned a dustbin in Shropsbury
- whitelights, on 08/19/2008, -5/+18Hate to say it, but I wish America would take similar measures. Perhaps not as far as taking the child away, but doing SOMETHING....
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -7/+20Nanny state is nanny
- pingveno, on 08/19/2008, -0/+13Starving (really starving, not just this-is-what's-for-dinner-young-man) is child abuse. Yes.
- brstilson, on 08/19/2008, -1/+13What about parents who starve their kids? Should they not have the kids taken away?
- Naskin, on 08/19/2008, -0/+11Fat kid in a little coat. Fat kid in a little coat... Britain, what's happening?! ...uh oh
- ashwinmudigonda, on 08/19/2008, -0/+11I take it that you don't visit home during Thanksgiving.
- Odindusk, on 08/19/2008, -11/+22I read the title as "Batman Threatens to Take Fattest Children Away from Parents"
I'm pissed that I read it wrong. - TheJimid, on 08/19/2008, -3/+14I have a campaign slogan
Don't let em' get husky or you might lose custody. - duckley, on 08/19/2008, -5/+15In America, it is the God-Fearing-Parents' right to kill their children.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 08/19/2008, -0/+10Totally a mixed arguement, because on the other side, why is it the public's job to finance their guaranteed mega overall healthcare bill by the time they pass, any rehabilitation, and unemployment for those too obese to work? I don't know the answer, tough one to balance.
- CoreyHalliwell, on 08/19/2008, -3/+13lol i do, i've just learned not to eat the whole turkey then go to mcdonald's after ;)
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -4/+14I'm lovin' it.
- monoa, on 08/19/2008, -2/+11You want to get scared? Head over to Youtube and search for things like 'police violence', 'police brutality', 'police taser', etc. It should be pretty obvious which country you should be scared of living in.
- digglet08, on 08/19/2008, -1/+10It sounds terrible, but I have no compassion for parents that allow their children to have health and social problems because of weight. Thats the most irresponsible thing a parent could do. Unless its genetic, a child being obese is completely the parent's fault. And if the kid gets really fat, BUY SOME DAMN VEGGIES! Whats it going to do, drive to the store???
- Darkaged, on 08/19/2008, -1/+10Me too, and I'm English.
- ZenMojo, on 08/19/2008, -0/+9SAY AMEN AND YOU GET A COOKIE!!!!!
- vertinox, on 08/19/2008, -0/+9Well this used to be called Natural Selection, but people got too namby pamby. I think every year you have to send your children to Africa to survive in the wilderness. If they survive, then you get to keep them for another year.
- jstone, on 08/19/2008, -0/+9Since starving kids is considered child abuse, starved children are taken away.
- textrant, on 08/19/2008, -0/+8We should take the kids away, but just about a 20 minute run from where they live and kick them out. Do this every day for a year. They'll soon drop the pounds.
- NonLeftistDiggr, on 08/19/2008, -3/+11or talk of banning knives because so many stabbings have taken place recently.
- zombiecarlin, on 08/19/2008, -4/+12Wow, since when has the US been the Epicurean center of the world. Last time I checked our food was much the same as Britain's only fattier and with more preservatives.
- Wangeye, on 08/19/2008, -4/+11Actually, it should go as far as taking the child away.
- WombleSlayer, on 08/19/2008, -2/+9Whoa whoa whoa!
Someone just expressed an intelligent viewpoint? ...Where the hell am I? - kilgoretrout88, on 08/19/2008, -11/+18That's cute. Our CCTV network is the result of our battles with the IRA (Americans, FYI the IRA are terrorists you helped to fund as they blew up our cities). We fight terrorism by setting up CCTV cameras, you fight terrorism by removing all human rights from every poor ***** you meet.
- inactive, on 08/19/2008, -1/+8good job , you actually had me going for a minute
- neocr0n, on 08/19/2008, -0/+7The article is talking about people so overweight they are in serious danger of dying soon. If that's the case its neglect by the parents and they should receive help. Also the story is a little sensationalist and the chances of this actually happening are slim.
- aznhomig, on 08/19/2008, -2/+9Om nom nom?
- diggmaddy, on 08/19/2008, -0/+7Just think how different would Harry Potter series have been if J K Rowling had integrated this story in it.
- textrant, on 08/19/2008, -0/+6I live in Manchester. 'It is cold and wet pretty much constantly and the sun hasn't shone in over fifty years.' is true.
