- gcnaddict, on 04/30/2009, -0/+9My uncle suffers from this as a result of the Iran/Iraq war. He's been plagued with depression, memory problems, and all sorts of other grim neurological disorders after being sent flying 20 feet by an Iraqi bomb while trying to save a soldier's life.
The sad thing is that no one had any treatment for the symptoms back then and no one in Iran has any treatments now. He took a path down drugs, first through marijuana, then to opium after the marijuana did nothing for him. Granted, the opium didn't do anything for him either, but he's now hooked on it, which is just another complication amongst a battery of ailments he's now dealing with.
My uncle can't be helped, but everything he went through taught me two good lessons in life: that war is ridiculously devastating and tragic on a deeply personal level and that a good number of drugs are bad and tend to only add to problems a person who turns to drugs for relief may be suffering. Granted. I'm expecting a flame war after this past sentence, but I'm merely sharing my own experiences.
(If it matters, I'm a natural-born US citizen. My uncle is Iranian) - inactive, on 04/30/2009, -2/+10Brain damage for sure, and what for? To fight for Israel in a battle that has no meaning to America.
- Sejes89, on 04/30/2009, -1/+6The soldiers in every war experience trauma of some sort and they deserve our support like any other war victim.
- seltaeb4, on 04/30/2009, -1/+5If we keep discovering adverse effects like this, we may one day have to abandon war altogether.
- headzoo, on 04/30/2009, -0/+3While in Iraq, a suicide bomber drove next to a vehicle with about 20 Marines from my company in it, and exploded. One of the Marines was wearing foam ear plugs, and the shock wave from the explosion pushed them deep into his ear. They had to be surgically removed. That shock wave is no joke, and packs a powerful punch.
- hawkspur, on 04/30/2009, -2/+3As if soldiers didn't have it hard enough as it is :(
- mick535, on 09/01/2009, -0/+1All of you idiots who haven't served in Combat or haven't experienced what it's like to be exposed to one of these blasts need to wake up. I have several soldiers in my company right now suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury and other over pressure related injuries. It's not a joke and it is all too real.
Get out from behind your computer and realize that in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars our soldiers have been exposed to more large scale explosions through IED's than in any other war in recorded history. They need as much help as they can get. For some, these injuries will only come out years after their exposure. - SierraEcho, on 04/30/2009, -1/+2Agree with WhoDonelt. I'm pretty sure they are describing PTS. I have several family members (civilians and military) that have been in war including myself. I was 10 at the time. Some symptoms my family members had match those they describe. Never been thrown up in the air by a bomb. It seems they're trying to put a new face to an old trauma and blame it on something physical instead of what it is. Humans under extreme stress. Just look at the old videos of people with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (might be able to find them on youtube) after world war 2. Pretty much the same as what they describe.
- WhoDoneIt, on 05/01/2009, -1/+1Nice job with the it and it's douche bag. Funny how eating dick is on your mind.
- dizmoz, on 04/30/2009, -1/+1For starters its -ridiculous and repercussions- learn how to spell.
second. eat a dick. - vipertech, on 04/30/2009, -1/+0Ok, so the car accident that launched the passenger 60ft counts with this right?
Seriously, we're talking repercussions of trauma to the human body. It's not like this is new. They put a "war" spin on it to get attention and possibly get funding.
Way to exploit our troops. Good game. - Shakermaker, on 04/30/2009, -2/+1It's tough on them, but remember there was no draft - it's what they signed up for.
- WhoDoneIt, on 04/30/2009, -3/+1We can't keep making up symptoms from symptoms. This is getting rediculious.
We are, for the most part, dealing with Post Traumatic Syndrome. Times change, scenarios change. However the face remains the same. You can't put a human being under that type of stress without reprocussions.
