You : i have something really special to tell you
girl : go on
you : aggghhhhhhhhhhh lolllz mudkips , post ***** or gtfo - socialexpert, on 11/22/2008, -0/+9New discoveries in science quite often leave me speechless...
- newms32, on 11/22/2008, -1/+10No, this wouldn't be a solution at all. A persistent vegetative state isn't just an inability to speak...her brain didn't process any external stimuli.
- ChileanGoD, on 11/22/2008, -0/+8I hope it has an on/off button. So he doesn't go, for example, "WOW, NICE *****!" when he meets a cute girl.
- petterp, on 11/22/2008, -0/+7any chance i could get one of those with wi-fi?
- MrCrimson, on 11/22/2008, -0/+6Actually, you are just about spot on.

This is a big article published in Esquire's 75th Anniversary and here's the excerpt:
However, very soon after the accident, a speech therapist discovered that there remained one peephole in the otherwise impenetrable wall that kept Erik sequestered in his cell of flesh and bones. Because he could still look up and down, he could still say yes and no. "Up for heaven, down for hell," the therapist told him.
"Erik, are you deaf?"
That was the first question Eddie asked him, because until then no one was sure. Erik looked down.
"So you must be tired of people yelling at you?"
He looked up and opened his eyes emphatically. - CheezyMunkee, on 11/22/2008, -0/+6Giggity
- nomadspartan, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6nice.
- DarkFaker, on 11/22/2008, -1/+7Now here is something that will benefit mankind.
- aenima987, on 11/22/2008, -0/+5I see what you did there.
- liquisoft, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4I love science.
Slightly off-topic, but when science finds methods of solving human disease or disability, everybody rejoices. But then when science provides evidence for evolution, the creationists squirm. It's like they only accept science when it is helpful to them. - MrCrimson, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4More info on Erik Ramsey and the research being done here:

A website I've been working with his father, (Eddie), on in my spare time. - BenBenMan, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4You'd want to spontaneously become hard every time you think of the letter "e"?
- chubbybubba, on 11/22/2008, -0/+4"Goddamit can you stop speaking so loudly! I'm mute not deaf!" (first words)
- timothydonohue, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3Dr. Kennedy, of Neural Signals, gave a seminar here about 2 months ago. It's pretty complicated electronics, and it still has a long way to go before it can interpret brain signals and turn them into flawless speech, but it's a start.
And for those of you that don't quite get it, this thing only monitors the speech areas of the brain. it doesn't just spit out everything you think. You have to TRY to speak, and this thing picks it up.
It's pretty cool, really, and I commend this kid and his family for being part of all of this. - newms32, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3We should be severing connections in their brains, not creating new ones.
- inactive, on 11/22/2008, -0/+3The internet has been doing this for years, right?
- Strongo, on 11/22/2008, -1/+4dumb statement
- embryoinbloom, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2not anymore!
- embryoinbloom, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1this will replace sound recognition in Windows 8
- katejohn, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1This is great!
- MrCrimson, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2It doesn't read thoughts, the way it works is tied directly into the muscle nerves that would normally do the work of speech which are undamaged but due to his specific brain damage, are "locked in" with the rest of his body.
When you put the effort into speech, the computer would reflect that effort. - MatthewK, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Just think, in the future we can all have our brains put into jars with all sorts of wires and electrodes going into it. While we may not have a body anymore, at least we'll be able to surf the 'net for eternity. Perhaps something can even be developed like The Matrix, except it'll just be our brain in the "real world," no body.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -2/+4Too bad they can't do that to replace Viagra for guys. :-D
- lennybird, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2I love techmology
- Strongo, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3do us a favor and broadcast it on the web
- Czaja, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2The man is completely paralyzed, so computer decoding what you're thinking and producing phonemes > sign language.
- Tasach, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2People don't like to accept stuff that directly opposes their world view.
- StinkyJoe, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Thaaaaat's Quagmire!
- sek52, on 11/22/2008, -0/+2Praise Science!
- litothegreat, on 11/22/2008, -1/+3couldn't this be the ultimate lie detector. implant the electrode in the brain of an unknowing person and ask them a question then listen in on their thoughts, or is the holy spirit speaking through all of us ::starts speaking in tongues::
- heywilliams, on 11/24/2008, -0/+1wow. that is truly amazing.

- Mujokan, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Could maybe help this guy, who wrote a book by blinking. Amazing story. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jean-Dominique_Bauby
Too late for this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwW9L_qzqp8 - grungegbunny, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Cybernetics on its way.
- werries, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1I'd really just be curious as to what the person in the coma thinks about.
- s4g4n, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1I can see how the government can implant this into your thoughts part of the brain.

- shownoregrets, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1This was a triumph
- smilingcandle, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Ah, that's so heartening to hear. Now, the guy can speak, sing, scream and sob in happiness.
- orangederange, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1"The cholinergic neurons in the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus (LDT) play a crucial role in the regulation of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. Because penile erection occurs during REM sleep, the involvement of the LDT in penile erection was examined in unanesthetized head-restrained rats. To detect penile erection, corpus spongiosum of the penis (CSP) pressure was measured through a telemetric device with simultaneous bulbospongiosum (BS) muscle EMG recording through stainless wires. Electrical stimulation in and around the LDT induced the following three CSP pressure patterns..."
bulbospongiosum (BS) muscle??? - lennybird, on 11/22/2008, -0/+1Sadly, there is already such a thing called Tourettes
