- skitle007, on 05/09/2008, -1/+30Way too sad. I think losing my mind is about the scariest thing I can think of.
- longchamp, on 05/09/2008, -11/+29No *****, both parents look like meth addicts.
- MattFromSeattle, on 05/09/2008, -0/+16Damn, what a helpless feeling to just have to watch your child deteriorate like that. Bad enough when it's your aging parents, but to watch your child? I don't know if I'd be as strong as these parents are.
- Asberry, on 05/09/2008, -0/+9Well that was incredibly depressing.
- HillerMylife, on 07/24/2008, -0/+9It's... the Daily Telegraph. It's one of the most renowned papers in the world. And it's not even a tabloid in the technical sense.
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8No, I'm just tired of stupid people on Digg. Speaking of which, maybe you should let your teacher have her computer back and get back to the colored pencils and stencils...
- MiddleOfNowhere, on 05/09/2008, -4/+11Well, congratulations on this witty, sophisticated (not to mention sensitive) remark.
Now if you had taken the two minutes required to read the article, you would now know that this is a very rare disease caused by a genetic defect.
But it's cooler to blame it on the look of the parents, isn't it? And you get all the brownie points from the giggling crowd - so why bother reading.
Classy. - AndreRollins, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6I agree. It must be even more difficult and heartbreaking to watch a child deal with this. My heart goes out to the family. May they have the strength to get them through.
- Flamancot, on 05/09/2008, -1/+6They could transplant nano-probes from seven's cortical node to repair the boy's brain. Where the hell is EMH when you need him...?
- Flamancot, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5ouch
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -5/+9Can I get some insight into why you felt it necessary to spout that? Does it make you horny conveying your childish fantasies over Digg? I really don't understand.
You're a douchebag. - inactive, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Losing your mind, acquiring dementia, etc. are not bad at all for the victim- after a certain point, they don't even realizing it's happening. It is however a ***** nightmare for the victim's family. Alzheimer's is way worse for the family than it is for the victim.
- Punisher2K, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Apparently you are wrong Dr. Science.
- crombat, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Are they going to make him go to school?
- Kas70, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Really sad, the poor little guy. This is a reminder for couples to get genetic testing before having children. My daughter is a carrier of alpha thallasemia. While it does not and will not affect her, if she creates a baby with someone who also passes the trait on, it would be fatal to that child. It doesn't cross people's minds usually, but these things can happen to anyone. Out of all the millions of things that can go wrong in the creation of a child, it is amazing so many turn out ok.
I hope he doesn't suffer too much and that this family takes lots of video and pictures to remember their precious time with their precious boy. - JanYpe, on 05/09/2008, -2/+5That poor little guy.
- Punisher2K, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Alzheimer's sufferers do have moments of clarity along the road to complete shut down. Having lived through it several times now I can say that they know something is happening to them.
- whataSAMF, on 11/28/2008, -3/+6your completely insensitive, you know for the first couple months you have Alzheimer's before it fully develops. Ive had a neighbor die of Alzheimer's and grandmother....its really just awful.
- Zaggynl, on 05/09/2008, -1/+4bad genes eh? hmm
- longchamp, on 05/09/2008, -4/+6Poor genes can lead to drug addiction, such as we see with this fine couple.
And drugs can cause genetic mutations due to problems during gamete formation - SavageBlackCat, on 05/09/2008, -8/+10He's making "new" friends everyday.
- Gephoria, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2A child that can't remember, ok now if I were a PASTURE i'd think of it like this, what can i get away with. i'd say get the kid high
"Don't worry, Be Happy Mon!" - MiddleOfNowhere, on 05/09/2008, -3/+5Ah. I see.
They look like meth addicts to you, so they *are*. Good we have established this now, because the article doesn't say so. But I'm sure you did some thorough research.
And because they are meth addicts (see above), they *both* develop a very rare gene defect and accordingly get a baby with a disease that less than a hundred children in the UK have. Serves them right, looking like that.
Good thinking. - MattFromSeattle, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3I'm with you duck, I've got a 9 year old step-son and my first biological son is due on the 16th, so I'm feeling a tad hyper-emotional about sad stories about kids.
- JustinNoland, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3Really? They actually look like a nice family. I mean, the hustband and wife aren't exactly stellar looking, but he looks better than most guys who read digg, I'm sure, and the vast majority of us (myself included) would tag the missus, so sorry that they don't conform to your standards, princess.
- radiantstorm, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2"And there is no known cure." Fu&k.
- zadadka, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2"The EMH is offline."
(in Majel Barret's voice) - AllYourBase3, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2sup taylor smith
- Flamancot, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1indeed that very episdoe - tho actually i caught it last night - been saving up episodes on dvr and going on trek binges every few days.
- tman84, on 05/09/2008, -3/+4I think there are maybe 2 credible papers in all of England. People think the tabloids in the States are bad, but the British newspapers are all just rags.
- Flamancot, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2word
- truthhammer, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1One of those things that makes me ask....Why?
- wexmajor, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1A fate worse than death.
- radio1mike, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Such a happy little kid. Awful...
- Zippo, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2That's got to be really hard on the parents.
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -2/+3Ditto to you.
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1What?
- duck99, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2I never used to get this emotional about anything until I had my first son...now my eyes well up everytime I read a sad story about a child.
- Zippo, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Lemme guess, you were watching Spike TV the other day and saw that episode with the death-row criminals. Yeah, me too.
- OneOfNone, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1There may be some hope for life extension. Recently researchers managed to extend lifespan of Niemann-Pick Type C mice 1.5x by giving them neurosteroid allopregnanolone. While allopregnanolone is not approved, other approved drugs (rifampicin, phenytoin, and hyperphorin found in St. John's Wort) have similar activity. Cyclodextrin is even more active in extending life of NPC mice and it's very safe as well. I am pretty sure parents are contacting those researchers and checking the options with their physicians.
- Gephoria, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2stupid people drink and ***** to much, if only it was legal for them to kill one another the world could be a happier place for me
Perfect friend for a retarded kid is somebody who can be his friend the first time every time - ntrlwmn, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1wow, how sad.
- pauliusuza, on 05/09/2008, -3/+4You spelled "I'm an idiot" wrong.
- Dagor38, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1It says in the Article that the Child suffers from Niemann-Pick Type C. This is not Alzheimer. The Headline only says Alzheimer because most people don't know what Niemann-Pick Type C is (an inherited problem with lipid metabolism).
- rexamafex, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1I'll help her get another kid that doesnt have alzheimers
- jerryn, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1Poor kid. I hope they find a cure soon.
- itsradBrad, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1I disagree. I think the mother is quite pretty. I like her eyes.
- MiamiRox, on 05/09/2008, -4/+4"Niemann-Pick is caused when both parents pass on a faulty gene to their baby."
Yeah, both parents look like they're full of faulty genes. - Surefly, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1Can't wait to see a picture of longchamp and find out what drugs his parents were on.
- inactive, on 05/09/2008, -3/+3Pft, as if any of you people really care. I sure as hell dont.
