To a billionaire that's like a penny to the average man." After reading the article though it clarifies that he's actually awarding eighty-one $100,000 grants. That's more impressive; a total of $8.1 million to be exact. The article should have been titled "Bill Gates pours millions into unconventional health research".
- akatsuki, on 05/05/2009, -2/+35The gates foundation, to my mind, is the most impressive philanthropic organization out there. They hire aggressively, manage their money aggressively, and actually use metrics for success.
- TheJuggernaut, on 05/05/2009, -1/+31I'll admit it: I think Bill Gates is a fantastic guy. He's full of geek cred, is a homegrown gajillionaire, and spends his money on major philanthropic efforts. I don't like his OS, but it doesn't stop me from respecting him.
- oneperday, on 05/05/2009, -1/+21In other news, huge monsoon floods village with centimeters worth of rain.
- Tenlow, on 05/05/2009, -3/+21Technically 8.1 million is thousands. Just very many of them. (and yes, I'm great fun at parties)
- Azerael, on 05/05/2009, -1/+13As much as some people dislike his operating system, you have to admit Bill Gates is awesome.
- inactive, on 05/05/2009, -0/+11He just needs to throw the Sith Lord Steve Jobs down a hole.
- phoggey, on 05/05/2009, -1/+12They just donated 30 million to my school, University of Texas, to build a CS building. In my mind, Bill can do no wrong.
Finally, no more walking to 5 different buildings (our dept is spread over 10).

- jgzman, on 05/05/2009, -0/+9Dude, think carefully about what 1/day wrote.
- JoeMondo, on 05/05/2009, -0/+8Have you heard about that crazy guy who thinks bread mold might be useful in curing diseases?
- BoneStamp, on 05/05/2009, -1/+9Health Research is probably more valuable than making Vista and Win 7 bug free.

- TwistyMcFister, on 05/05/2009, -1/+8Malaria research and eradication needs all the help it can get!
- JargonScott, on 05/05/2009, -1/+8None of these sound all that unconventional really. I was more hoping for things like grafting the top half of a paraplegic to a horse, because centaurs rock. Or maybe learning to implant a 3rd eye into the back of someone's head. This would greatly benefit stay-at-home moms and elementary teachers.
- AboveandBeyond, on 05/05/2009, -2/+9and this is coming from a guy who is healthy and well(touch wood), meanwhile steve jobs still doesn't give a dime to philanthropy, despite having cancer.
- borez, on 05/05/2009, -4/+11Dear Bill, I'm currently working on a project that involves shooting lasers up magnetised chickens arses to see if they cough up tomatoes. Please can I have $1 million to help me get started?
- duncan202, on 05/05/2009, -2/+9You're an idiot.
- Gr1nch, on 05/05/2009, -2/+8That typically happens when you're a self made billionaire. You don't really give that mentality up when you leave your monopoly of a corporation.
- atchon, on 05/05/2009, -0/+6It is in pounds not euros. The exchange rate isn't that great either from the article "awarding 81 $100,000 (£65,000)". The title should say pours millions in my opinion. It could also say pours thousands into 81 different grants.
- imightbewrong, on 05/05/2009, -1/+7i'm not a math major but 100,000 X 81 = 8.1 million .... its seems safe to say Gates pours millions into unconventional health research
- bloodhound01, on 05/05/2009, -0/+6sooooo wheres all the articles about steve jobs pouring money into charities? I've seen about 1000s of bill gates charity stories.
- clove7, on 05/05/2009, -0/+5Tracy: Doctor Spaceman, when they check my DNA, will they tell me what diseases I might get, or help me to remember my ATM pin code?
Dr. Spaceman: Absolutely. Science is whatever we want it to be. - inactive, on 05/05/2009, -0/+5Ugh I had to go fix my friend's wife's mom's computer a few months ago, she was still running Windows ME and I had to go searching for a 12 year-old printer driver online.

- Hetman, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4What is wrong with Genetic engineering? I agree we need to look into our medical industry because it is out of control. But these are all studies that were lacking funding. They were not the million dollar pharmacetical expirements to create a better boner pill.
- jgzman, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4Willhirsch, are you aware that the sun is inches away?
- willhirsch, on 05/05/2009, -2/+6It's a shame that these things are considered "unconventional". If everything about the research was familiar territory then there would be no point in the research. These projects are pursuing genuinely important solutions. I would much rather the projects researching crap like whether a glass of wine a day is good for your heart or bad be the ones labelled "unconventional".
- u8myfoood, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4He's innovative, so just wait for the super drug that cures everything, The Revolutionary iCure™.

- IFEice, on 05/05/2009, -0/+4If you want to talk about IT companies who support higher education, it's always Microsoft and IBM. Google and Apple is very behind in this area (perhaps due to their resources). MS and IBM offer an incredible amount of internships that gives current and future graduates experience and opportunity. These two companies have my gratitude and respect for helping my career.
- IFEice, on 05/05/2009, -1/+5Yes, whether you like it or not, Google is primarily web-software based, whose market is relatively unpredictable, and their main source of income is advertising. As much as I hate to say, Google's influence is a bit overrated (this is changing however). When it comes down to the basics, Google is just a search engine. They realize this, hence the innovative projects Google has been working on.
Net income (billions):
MS - 17.7
IBM - 12.3
Apple - 4.8
Google - 4.2
When compared to these above companies, Google is vulnerable. Remember how dominant Yahoo was? Good thing is, Google seems to know how to stay ahead in whatever it is they focus on, as opposed to Yahoo. Let's just hope that their devotion to cloud computing pays off. - navidb, on 05/05/2009, -2/+6Bill gates is so nice I want to take him behind a middle school....yeah I'm just getting into 30 rock. Great show, and good job Bill.

- ranknfile, on 05/05/2009, -0/+3GMO methodology is riddled with pitfalls and adverse consequences. I used to be against GMO, but I came to the realization, after much reading, that GMO research is essential especially with a rapidly growing world population, and rapidly changing climate which may reduce the mass of farming land, therefore eliminating any margin for error. I'm interested about that wiping plants that can actually reproduce phenomenon. Is that true? I can't find anything about that.
