- transfix, on 05/26/2009, -2/+43This must be tough. :(
- drummerguy520, on 05/26/2009, -2/+35Much respect to that guy.
- descrysis, on 05/26/2009, -1/+23"Contains some graphic images"
They weren't kidding, my heart stopped when that first image loaded up. Poor guy. - Tchaikovsky08, on 05/26/2009, -2/+20These photos are so inspiring -- what modern medicine can do to reconstruct not only faces, but lives, is truly a miracle.
It's nice to see the genius of humanity used to do good once in awhile. - flyingsquirle, on 05/26/2009, -2/+15Wow the wonders of modern science, hopefully we can help more people to gain back their lives or to begin a new one all together!
- yomer333, on 05/26/2009, -1/+14It seems like a common theme with these that the transplanted part seems "fatter" than the rest. I assume it's intentional for healing purposes or something.
Having said that, the picture of his eyelid healed shut is pretty *****. I wish I could send that guy some candy or something. - radix2, on 05/26/2009, -0/+10Well post-surgery there will be some swelling - that is inevitable. As to whether these people will ever "fit" their face depends very much on how well the nerves take. If they do get some control then they will not look so slackfaced (similar to problems that stroke patients go through). Although I hope that happens, even if it doesn't they will still feel more acceptable - and after all this is really about two things: Restoring functions; and restoring appearances.
But ***** - to live like they did before this surgery is just unimaginable to me. Mad props to them for having the strength! - GoKings, on 05/26/2009, -4/+13How sad... But props to them for having the courage to allow themselves to be photographed. It's nothing to be ashamed of.
Oh, and also dugg for Boston.Com... They really know how to do pictures and slideshows. - Lead4D, on 05/26/2009, -0/+6Does the huge floppy face ever go away or is that permanent?
Honestly, 10 years ago I've seen on the news, people who opted for getting prosthetic face parts to replace a lost face, and it looked way more convincing than any of the recent patients who have had this done. - ureshiidesuka, on 05/26/2009, -1/+7i guess weve got a long way to go before Faceoff is plausible huh?
- Kryptonitfusion, on 05/26/2009, -0/+6It was still graphic even if you selected to hide the graphic ones. :(
- Romanito, on 05/26/2009, -0/+6You accidentally the... wait, what?
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -0/+6Yeah, candies shall fix that mess.
- zip000, on 05/26/2009, -0/+5Maybe I've been desensitized or something, but I didn't find anything particularly graphic. The next to last one with the big hole in his face was the worst, but I wouldn't call it graphic exactly.
- Onion575, on 05/26/2009, -0/+5Maybe you should quit your job at Burger King and become a surgeon.
- enkideridu, on 05/26/2009, -1/+5I thought we could do better than that?
- WeirdEdsel, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3Oh Wow.
- Ragarnok, on 05/26/2009, -0/+3well it's much better than the big hole he had before, it's not only prosthetic too.
- verkon, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2"Ba-dum-tsch"
- cptcliche, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2You go first
- sunnydaize, on 05/26/2009, -1/+3its probably a combination of excess skin from the transplant coupled with poofiness (yes that is a technical term) from the healing process. God speed to both of them...I can't even imagine what it would be like to live day to day with that.
- hosj321, on 05/26/2009, -1/+3I pretty much said "Oh Wow" after every picture
- thejohnfloyd, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2Is it me or does he look a bit like Voldemort in the last few?
- trefitch, on 05/27/2009, -0/+2You've gotta respect those people, risking shame and ridicule (as well as plenty of pain) in order to pave the way so that some day, face transplant recipients wont be insulted by children on the internet.
- SPARTACVS, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2"You'll say wow, everytime..."
- SPARTACVS, on 05/26/2009, -1/+3www.instantrimsh-NO HOW ABOUT ***** YOU?
- lagmar, on 05/26/2009, -0/+2Goddamn, that makes me feel stupid for worrying about the scar under my eye...
- konstantinos88, on 05/28/2009, -0/+1u bad. u real bad..
- Torx, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Welcome back to the "normal" Mr. Maki. Im betting hes gonna get quite a few free razors in the mail. Im sure he'll be delighted to shave again.
- iamacyborg, on 05/27/2009, -0/+1That just.. causes me to cringe to think of having to live with having a hole in your face like that. It makes me wish I had become a surgeon.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1I'd wear a mask like venom from gi joe. The end results dont really gain much.
- mediaphile, on 05/27/2009, -0/+1@Broan: Two in the US, you mean. Seven worldwide.
- hayden.evans, on 05/26/2009, -1/+2Much respect to all the patients who have to go through such a terrible ordeal. God Bless
- 007isbond1, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Oh Wow.
- garlicdeath, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1Stuff like this makes me realize just how much of a piece of crap I am. I doubt I'd have the resolve to continue living if I were to look like that. The best I could hope for would be to move back in with my parents and just lock myself in my old room and just play video games to pass the days away as I dive into a life of isolation and despair. But I imagine I'd probably just off myself.
However, your post pretty much summed up my first thoughts when I saw the pics. - zdwade, on 05/26/2009, -1/+2did they have to make the pictures so big? thumbnails wouldve sufficed.
- Talphin, on 05/26/2009, -0/+1I'm a bit confused. In the 3rd to last image, the face has a nose, and in the last 2, it does not. Did they remove it? Or are those still "before" pictures?
- KatherineVolk, on 05/26/2009, -1/+2I clicked an x on the top right in my browser immediately after I saw the warning message.
- Broan, on 05/27/2009, -0/+0There have only been 2 face transplants ever, so no, you have never seen better jobs.
- garlicdeath, on 05/26/2009, -0/+0Your post made me go :(
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -1/+1He sure went for an improvement there.
- calibud, on 05/26/2009, -0/+0You can read the full story here: http://tinyurl.com/q2r4nz
Or by the full link if it works: http://www.boston.com/news/health/articles/2009/05 ... - Rivetgeek, on 05/26/2009, -4/+2AHAHHAHAHAHA... oh not you, I was watching this HILARIOUS simpsons episode. Bart just said "cowbunga dude" *wipes tear* Im sorry, you were saying?
- chipxsd, on 05/26/2009, -3/+1Dugg for the chick with the camera
- Johnny1029, on 05/26/2009, -2/+0What I meant is I've seen people do better jobs on people like this on TV geez. I can tell no one liked my comment so I don't need some ***** to come along and tell me to quit my non-existing job. I would be a surgeon IF I wasn't already going to college for something else. The truth is you're maybe the one whose working at Burger King and are so depressed by your situation that you decide to call someone out on it. Oh and saying someone should quit they're fast food job is extremely old. Why don't you put the cobwebs back on that joke and go Google another one. Better luck next time.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -4/+1where is the after I just say a few people who had unfortunate situations with their faces :(
- DonAlfred, on 05/26/2009, -7/+1Maybe they should just had let him die instead?
- MrFisty, on 05/26/2009, -10/+4Impressive. He even looks better than Nicolas Cage.
- inactive, on 05/26/2009, -7/+0I am fairly certain I saw that guy in Cirque du Soleil
