- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -2/+106I doubt that will work. How about sending your fat kid outside to play instead of letting him play video games all day.
- thegamingguy, on 11/19/2008, -5/+65How many little kids have the ability to watch an ad and then get themselves to the fast food restaurant after they were inspired? The answer is almost none. Which means that if they are craving this food because it is on tv then somebody is taking them there. So it is on the parents or guardians to stop taking them regardless of whether it is on tv or not.
- WendyThomas, on 11/19/2008, -5/+56Yes, blame the fast food companies instead of the parents who let their children eat french fries while watching TV all day. Sounds like a plan.
- trolleyfan, on 11/19/2008, -5/+48No it won't. Until "healthy" food is as cheap/cheaper than *un*-healthy - something which would probably require heavy subsidies at the least - or the amount of poverty in the U.S. dramatically falls, people are going to keep eating at fast food places...because that's the only place they can f**king *afford* to eat at.
- mattnyc99, on 11/19/2008, -2/+44in this economy? people are only going to eat mcdonald's more....
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -1/+42Yeah, let's do everything except actually improving what they eat.
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -2/+24How about a ban on stupid ass parents that are too lazy to cook for their children?
- relay2005, on 11/19/2008, -2/+21Can you say Censorship.....what is this country fricken doing?!
- nichesiteexpert, on 11/19/2008, -1/+19When I was a kid, we used to go play outside and get our exercise that way. Nowadays parents just let their fat kids sit in front of the TV and videogame machine all day long. And we wonder why childhood obesity is on the rise?
- sugarazor, on 11/20/2008, -5/+21"You can go far cheaper and healthier. "
Not really. Healthy food is expensive. - ileftfark, on 11/19/2008, -1/+16Did anyone mention proper parenting and personal responsibility yet?
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -1/+16brb going to get a baconator.
- kplo, on 04/01/2009, -0/+15it is cheap. two bucks will fill you up.
- Andy5925, on 11/19/2008, -0/+14the fatness...its killing me
- inactive, on 11/19/2008, -4/+16fast food is fine when the kids aren't so damn lazy!!!!!!
- trolleyfan, on 11/20/2008, -0/+11Well of course! Going outside is *dangerous*...don't you know it's just teaming with pedophiles out there waiting to snatch up your kids?
- gregkr, on 11/19/2008, -3/+14How about a ban on TV?
- GoneGreen, on 11/20/2008, -0/+10While they are at it why not ban all of those ***** medication commercials.
- Technoloki, on 11/20/2008, -1/+10How about a ban on kids?
- naturalpapa, on 11/19/2008, -1/+10Good idea, but maybe turning off the TV and sending the kids outside would help more?
- heyitsguay, on 11/20/2008, -0/+9It's not cost that's the problem, it's convenience. Have you tried buying actual groceries and cooking? Unless you spring for all-organic whatever, it's not too expensive. Maybe they won't be eating lobster and steak, but you can certainly get ground beef, pasta, and salads. So, why aren't people in low income brackets doing that? That's certainly a more complicated question, and not one solved by subsidizing whatever food you happen to think is best.
- cubicledrone, on 11/19/2008, -6/+15Two words: First Amendment.
While we're at it, ever try to find vegetables or fruit on the "dollar menu?" How about at the grocery store where you can buy apples for $3 each with a Disney character on the package? Oh, sure. You can eat healthy, but you're going to pay extra because this is a capitalist grocery store.
You can get two pounds of dense deep-fried ***** at any one of 12 different fast food restaurants for $4, but if you want vegetables or fruit, you're looking at a sit-down restaurant with a menu and $12 per plate. That is the problem. - Grok22, on 11/20/2008, -0/+9Fast food is expensive, I can buy a 20lb bag of potatoes for around $5. thake some potatoes, carrots and onions quarter them and toss with some olive oil and herbs/spices and bake at 350 for about an hour. very easy cheap meal thats quite healthy.
- jggube, on 11/19/2008, -1/+9It sort of works with cigarette ads (but I'm not sure if there's direct causal evidence for that or just speculation), so maybe it can help with fast food (or junk food) commercials. The problem then becomes - who gets to say who's a fast food chain and who isn't? I mean, with cigarettes it's obvious, but when this thing goes into play, I'm sure the big fast food chains will rebrand and re-structure their stuff so that they don't fall into the category of "fast food".
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8wii fit is to excercise as cod is to going to war
- inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+8That involves effort.
- AmyVernon, on 11/19/2008, -0/+7You hit it right on the head.
- joshmoney, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7Nice try but it would actually be more like -
"Yes, blame the gun shops instead of the killers who abuse their constitutional rights by using guns to harm instead of defend others. Sounds like a plan."
And if you still don't get it, Gun Shops are manufacturers of goods like just Fast Food companies. They are not however the parents or guardians of "the people." In a free society, the only one "letting the people" do anything is the individual himself. And weapons are not "murderous", intentions however, are.
/False Analogy, look it up ; ) - trolleyfan, on 11/20/2008, -1/+8Yes - and at that same store, I can buy a meal for four of nice "healthy* macaroni and cheese (note: That's sarcasm) for the price of your salad...for one. Guess which a poor family's going to buy. Face it, unless you happen to live on/next to a farm, healthy food is more expensive than the unhealthy. And if you have little money, you can either buy the unhealthy...or go without electricity that month.
- Vhaeos, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7Haha, right. McDonalds is violating your "rights" because you can't bring yourself not to down another cheeseburger?
- Crucible1001, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7@trolleyfan
For 1.50 I can make a healthy 1000-1200 calorie meal consisting of organic 100% whole grain noodles, organic spaghetti sauce, and homeade whole wheat garlic bread.
That is using parts of a 1 pound package of noodles, jar of sauce, bread ingredients, light butter, seasonings. It takes about 10 minutes of actual time in the kitchen to prepare. A breadmaker helps.
Healthy food is cheaper and tastes better if you actually know how to cook. - PerroLoco, on 11/20/2008, -2/+9My three kids see those adds. They're all in the low-normal weight range for their age and height. All you have to do is be a parent. There, did anyone mention that yet?
- a1cd, on 11/20/2008, -2/+9Oh please, these Ads are not forcing the PARENTS to take out their wallets and buy their kids some McDonalds
think about this, For a kid under 10, how many ways can they really go out themselves and buy fast food? Most of the time they are going to get it from their parents money.
And when they grow up and get a job so they can buy it for themselves, its their own choice they dont need the government to tell them what to eat and its not like some TV ad is not going to affect their decision anyway.
Some people need to grow up and do some parenting - heyitsguay, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7...or cooking? Is that really not an option anymore? I don't think you've ever really gone into a grocery store and had to pay $3 for an apple, considering they're something like a sixth of that anywhere I've seen. Store-bought groceries are cheaper and healthier than even fast food, it's just that nobody seems to want to take the time to cook anymore. And what is this about Disney? Again, I've never seen Disney-brand apples, or even anything like that. They're usually sold in bulk by farmers or other growers and don't even have a branding. But maybe that's just where I live...
- GeeksSpeakFont, on 11/19/2008, -3/+10I hope so! Nutritious eating is the best preventative medicine there is to offer!
- Recidivus, on 11/20/2008, -0/+7*****, you don't even have to know how to cook, it's not like making a casserole is that difficult. People have this skewed idea that cooking something involves endless hours of sweating away in the kitchen. You don't HAVE to buy organic for it to be healthy, just about anything you make yourself is going to be better for you than drive thru.
Also, when did kids stop eating PB&J or tuna fish sandwiches for lunch? - joebleaux, on 11/20/2008, -1/+7But... aren't there bears outside?
- cnot3, on 11/19/2008, -1/+7They already did it with tobacco products, McDonalds isn't any better for you, not that the gov. have the right to ban either.
- raybury, on 11/20/2008, -1/+7Somewhat fast, somewhat food-like. Offers ideal entry-level work to people who might otherwise think life is fair.
- IADTatami, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6One of the problems here is that time spent preparing the food is part of the economic equation.
Fast food will have to get significantly more expensive before people believe it's worth the time to prepare their own food.
For example, I like to make huge batches of beans w/rice, divvy them up into meal sized portions and freeze them for later consumption.
$6 - 1lb of bacon
$2 - 2 lbs pinto beans (I used to use red beans, but they cost $2/lb around these parts)
$1 - 1 lb rice
$2 - 2 onions
$2 - head of celery
$1 - head of garlic
$0.50 - crushed red peppers
$14.50 total
Now, I spend half an hour preparing the food and 2 hours cooking it. Assuming I'm "paying" myself minimum wage, this brings the total cost of the batch to:
$30.87
I get ten meals' worth of food per batch.
$3.08/meal
Even when you buy and cook in bulk, fast food remains competitive. - inactive, on 11/20/2008, -0/+6………………………………………………………………………………………………

What next? Daily nutrition rations? Soilent Green? - Jabrams2, on 11/19/2008, -4/+10hmmm..getting this country to NOT be fat anymore...sounds like a plan to me
- domfosnz, on 11/19/2008, -1/+7At least it's a step in the right direction.
- superdigg, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Oh please. Fast food companies are not infringing on anyone's rights. Are you a fattie? If so, YOU'RE the one shoving food down your gullet, not the fast food companies.
- sugarazor, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Or someone could buy a double cheeseburger and fries for $2 and eat instantly. It's fast, cheap, and convenient, which is why so many people eat it.
- drex8, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5I'm lovin' it.
- TheFinaleofSeem, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5Most fruits and veggies are less than $1 a pound. The myth that crappy food is cheaper than healthy food is outright *****.
- MasterQ, on 11/20/2008, -0/+5or just stop buying him fast food.
Television and other forms of entertainment that did not require any physical exertion were around long before video games. i'm sick of people mindlessly blaming other things because kids are fat. if kids sat on the couch all day playing video games and eating healthy food would they be fat? They would be out of shape because of lack of exercise, but I don't think they would be obese. The cause of obesity is the food, not video games. -
