But this will only happen in California if folks call their elected representatives. Without taking action, it's guaranteed to be crushed by entrenched interests (social conservatives, the prison guard lobby, etc.).
Please tell your state assemblyperson and state senator to support the bill. When you call, don't just state your opinion, give evidence for why this is a good idea. Tell them that it'll raise over $900 million in taxes. Remind them that it'll only be legal for adults over the age of 21 and will carry stiff penalties for youth under 21 who disobey the law. Tell them about Portugal's experience - this link, which discusses how Portugal's decriminalization program, which took effect almost a decade ago, actually decreased drug use among youth:

Not everyone gets addicted to them. I have to take diazepam for panic attacks, and I'm not addicted at all. It's the idiots that pop them like they're candy who give benzodiazepines a bad rep.

These people are in there 20s still. They do not need this much medication. However the DR must have forgotten there hypocratic oath. Because they are causing more harm to these people than good.
