- newbis, on 11/13/2009, -8/+48Slowly but surely pushing personal responsibility out of the equation...
- zombiecarlin, on 11/13/2009, -0/+37Dang, if this turns out to yield a reliable cure for obesity and all the fat women disappear, where am I going to find girls desperate enough to sleep with me?
- Tayls, on 11/13/2009, -5/+26Does this bacteria only exist in America?
- fonetikly, on 11/13/2009, -3/+23Specifically, this bacteria is called "Cheese".
- ftc08, on 11/13/2009, -0/+17tons of fat chicks.
I see what you did there. - xenuxenuts, on 11/13/2009, -1/+17Stop smoking and turn 30. Problem solved.
- liquidfirex, on 11/13/2009, -5/+21Correlation =/= Causation
- Laminarcissus, on 11/13/2009, -1/+16"Hey Mike, let's see what happens if we inject human feces into that mouse."
"Awesome! And then let's go take a dump on that cat!"
"Once again Mike, you've completely missed the point." - DrDigg, on 11/13/2009, -1/+16That is based on research from the 1930's and has never been shown to have any clinical relevance. You could even make the argument that an immune response to what you eat is a good thing. -GI doc
- inactive, on 11/13/2009, -0/+14Strange. I'm sitting here smoking a cigarette and being depressed about turning 30 in a few months.
- chuckDontSurf, on 11/13/2009, -1/+13Every time I eat cooked food? That sounds like a load of *****.
- sfasu77, on 11/13/2009, -0/+12Don't worry, there will always be tons of fat chicks for you to chubby-chase.
- uberchaoslord, on 11/13/2009, -0/+9Tons of fat chicks doesn't necessarily mean many, because the chick to ton ratio is lower :P
- metrodigg, on 11/13/2009, -0/+9It wasn't the Big Mac but the super-sized fries sent in to try and force the burger out. Luckily they will all drown in the flood of Dr. Pepper or freeze in the McFlurry.
- Ellipsys, on 11/13/2009, -0/+8I'd be very interested in what the "Western" diet was comprised of that gave rise to more fermicutes and thus fatter mice. Was it it full of American style processed foods, hydrogenated oils etc.. or was it more like a European diet which often has plenty of fat (through olive oil and butter), but lacks much of the "faux food" that is present in the US?
- FlaNative, on 11/13/2009, -1/+9"Strange. I'm sitting here smoking a cigarette and being depressed about turning 30 in a few months"
The comments by xenuxenuts are coming from within your house. - Oddish, on 11/13/2009, -0/+8"Researchers injected the mice with samples of fresh and frozen human feces"
I'm sure they really appreciated that. - apetrie, on 11/13/2009, -1/+8I don't see why looking for factors and reasons as to why some people gain and retain weight much, much more easily than others (yes not everyone has to eat like a pig to be overweight) is taking away personal responsibility. Some of us have to work a lot harder, and I personally would like to understand why even if I can't do anything about it, and maybe there are small things I can do.
I take 100% responsibility for myself and have worked hard to get my body into decent shape and understand the challenges I face being the product of two families of mostly large people. I'm not looking for a miracle pill to help me, or to get out of having to work to stay in shape, however if understanding the way my body works can help me exercise and eat more effectively then I will take all the info I can get. - gdog05, on 11/13/2009, -0/+7WalMart doesn't seem to be going anywhere.
- poopin, on 11/13/2009, -3/+10"The gut microbiota of obese mice has been shown to have significantly more of one main type of bacteria called Firmicutes and fewer of another kind called Bacteroidetes (both types populate human guts as well); in normal mice, the distribution is the opposite."
*****! It is all about lazy-ass mice without self-contol!!!! I mean, successful people like Oprah, Valerie Bertinelli, Kirsty Ally, Dan Goodman all have NO SELF CONTROL! I have no idea how they manage their famous, wealthy lives since this self-control obviously alludes them!
It is ***** insane to think that people can have a gene that gives them the propensity to be big-ass, lazy-***** fatties. Fight your genes! Fight the "gay" propensity gene, fight the "OCD" propensity gene all you lazy assed no self-controllers.
Scientists are WRONG! You just have NO self control.
Die in a burger!
/maybe a hint of sarcasm... - blankman, on 11/13/2009, -1/+8yeah except there are people who don't eat bad, and still are fat no matter what they do
- timothycrash01, on 11/13/2009, -1/+82000 Calories of lean nutritious food =/= 2000 calories of deep fried ***** filled with saturated fat.
If only nature were that simple. The bodies reaction and process of breaking down food depends a great deal on what the food is actually composed of. Fat vs. fibre is one very good example.

It isn't always simple math. - namja23, on 11/12/2009, -1/+7Now that gives new meaning to, "You are what you eat".
Fascinating find. - zombiecarlin, on 11/13/2009, -0/+6Dude xenuxenuts is hiding in your stomach eating all your calories, and stealing your wi-fi, watch out!
- adoggz, on 11/13/2009, -0/+6God, I wish people would actually read the damn articles before making ***** comments. I guess while I'm asking for the impossible i also want a billion dollars.
- flyinfoofighter, on 11/13/2009, -1/+7That means sea men eat... oh nevermind.
- nepidae, on 11/13/2009, -0/+6I hate when people use that phrase without understanding its meaning (about 90% of the time).
- veriix, on 11/13/2009, -0/+5hmm, what will win? Digg's love of science or hate of obese people. Lets watch.
- thatruth101, on 11/13/2009, -1/+6stop regurgitating information, you'll look smarter. even drinking distilled water causes a rise in white blood cells like an immune response to an infection.
The bacteria in our gut isn't from the food we eat, we're born with bacteria colonies in our gut, and we keep those throughout our life. - TheUngod, on 11/13/2009, -0/+5Soo...maybe the Futurama episode where Fry eats a bad egg salad sandwich and gets worms that make him smart and strong isn't so far from the truth either? I mean if there are things that make you get fat, why not things that make you get strong or smart?
On the other hand, this could just be another excuse for fat people. - MrSteamTank, on 11/13/2009, -0/+5Everybody can lose weight...some people just have to work much harder at it than others.
I just wish the scrawny toothpicks who can't put on a pound if their life depended on it would shut up. I have buddies that say I'm unhealthy and fat yet when we go the gym I'm lifting triple what they do in pretty much every category and can still run just as much as them. If I weigh 50 pounds more than them, can run as much as them, and am far stronger I hardly doubt they are the "healthier" ones.
How about we call everybody who doesn't look like this unhealthy because if we all really "tried" we really could all look like that. No ***** about "body type".

- Elranzer, on 11/13/2009, -0/+4There are also people who eat nothing but junk food all day, and don't ever exercise, yet they remain skinny their entire lives. There people are referred to as ectomorphs.
I'm sure we all know at least one person like that. Some of the guys in my IT department eat nothing but pizza and Bawls all day and never gain weight. - chikuten, on 11/13/2009, -0/+4≠
- flyinfoofighter, on 11/13/2009, -1/+54
- Modiga, on 11/13/2009, -0/+4It can be argued that people do natural body weight limits and what determines these limits is possibly tied into our fat cells. Fat cells remove energy out of the blood stream and store it. If fats, oils, sugars, etc. pass by and the fat cells are empty, they will grab them and store them. This actually deprives the body of energy by locking it away. Of course, if somebody refuses to consume more energy, the fat cells are forced to release energy back, that is their purpose. It doesn't mean the person won't feel a sense of hunger or starvation. Fat cells can also only absorb a certain amount of energy before filling up. Typically what they do if they do fill up completely is multiply, allowing the person to store more energy, but the body will also demand more energy. Fat cells are also pretty hard to get rid of. If you were brought up with a very unhealthy diet, ended up with lots of fat cells then you're going to have to satisfy them for your adult life.
So your natural weight could well be determined by the number of fat cells you have, where you're only comfortable when a equilibrium is reached and the energy they absorb and the energy they release balances out.
My personal experience is that my body weight never passes (or I have never seen it pass) 9 stone (126lbs) I am 5'7" tall and so that would classify me as being under weight, but I eat as much or possibly more than the next man. A few years back I got a bad case of tonsillitis and as a result didn't eat very much for a week. My weight dropped down to around 105lbs, seriously underweight. Once I had recovered from the tonsillitis I went on an eating spree. It was not a conscious decision, a meal that would normally satisfy me, left me hungry. My weight quickly returned to the 120ish lbs mark and stayed there. I'm sure for some fat people their lives aren't much different. They're overweight. They can reduce their calorie intake and their weight will drop, however, in doing that they're left far hungrier than they normally are and all they want to do is devour as much as is needed to get their weight to return to its former value. - yoshiboy, on 11/13/2009, -0/+4It's over 9000!
- roddack, on 11/13/2009, -0/+4Maybe not for a large % of them but you can not deny that a portion actually have legitimate medical reasons.
- uberchaoslord, on 11/13/2009, -0/+4RTFA ffs - it says "people who are fat tend to have more of bacteria X because it thrives on sugar and fat".
- Sail3, on 11/13/2009, -0/+3I think the most interesting part of this article is the genetically engineered mice. How do they survive without any bacteria in their guts?
- lead2thehead, on 11/13/2009, -0/+3Oh, I see. Obesity causes a rise in bacteria. That's the inverse of what the article's description says.
- RadiatedAnt, on 11/13/2009, -0/+3sure its not the twinkies?
- Zerohcool, on 11/13/2009, -0/+3Um the article is in Time dude you are not reading a scientific paper, you are reading some journalists bastardization of a scientific paper.
- Vaiper, on 11/13/2009, -2/+5My thoughts exactly.
- Rudegar, on 11/13/2009, -0/+3the flash could eat at mcdonalds !
- inactive, on 11/13/2009, -2/+5Where can I buy some of this bacteria? I'm tired of being skinny.
- thatruth101, on 11/13/2009, -2/+5mcdonalds isn't the problem. one could eat mcdonalds for 3 square meals a day, and remain skinny. It's all about the balance of calories that person burns/takes in. if you're only burning 1500 calories a day, and you're eating 2000 calories a day, you'll gain weight. a moderately active person can burn 3000 calories in a day, and in the army they give soldiers over 6000 calorie diets during bootcamp.
- namja23, on 11/13/2009, -0/+2Makes perfect sense.
