- Fabbyfubz, on 09/06/2008, -6/+61I began masturbating about 6 years ago, around the same time gas prices started going up. COINCIDENCE? I THINK NOT!
- Scienceticist, on 09/06/2008, -2/+37Sir, I don't wish to be callous, but you are precisely the person this article was written for.
- b1ffr43p, on 09/06/2008, -1/+32Ugg, you can't actually be serious.
Thiomersal is a compound with the chemical formula C9H9HgNaO2S. When individual elements bond to form compounds, they take on different properties.
Table salt is a compound with the chemical formula NaCl. That is, it consists of Sodium and Chlorine in equal parts. On its own, sodium bursts into flames upon coming in contact with water. On its own, chlorine is a poisonous gas. Yet, when they combine, they form a compound essential to keeping your cells functioning properly.
I'll agree with the above poster and suggest that you study some chemistry and stop listening to Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey. Also, please share with us at which hospital your wife works, so we can give it a wide berth. - enantiodromia, on 09/05/2008, -3/+33"Senator John McCain clouded the picture at a Texas town hall meeting in February, saying, "It's indisputable that [autism] is on the rise amongst children... and there's strong evidence that indicates that it's got to do with a preservative in vaccines."
I didn't know that, actually. - madeingermany, on 09/05/2008, -4/+33correction: The mercury-based preservative (Thiomersal ) was never scientifically proven to be any problem - but they still removed it.
Also it is very much disputed that autism is on the rise... - sugarazor, on 09/06/2008, -8/+35I cannot believe people are still believing this Jenny McCarthy nonsense. Vaccines... do not... cause autism. There has never been a single shred of credible evidence from a peer-reviewed source to ever support this claim and hippies are still buying into it. It's disturbing and sad that people are willing to endanger the health of their children and others because they think they're smarter than a doctor.
- 3gibberish4q57, on 09/05/2008, -8/+34Well, dammit, I read that vaccines cause autism in a forwarded email. Emails have never lead me wrong before. I'm just going to stay on the safe side and not vaccinate my children.
- studdenfadden, on 09/06/2008, -7/+33A friend of mine got into a car accident, boom, 2 years later he had syphilis. Think about it.
No study proved that tobacco was safe. There is a difference between not proving that something is harmful and proving that something is safe.
18 months is the age that children start to show signs of autism and the age that people start to get vaccines. - CamperBob, on 09/06/2008, -0/+25Wait'll somebody tells you what table salt is made from. You'll ***** a brick.
- LucasVB, on 09/06/2008, -2/+24Dude, read the article. It doesn't ***** matter what you think, or how spooky coincidental things are. If statistically there's no correlation between the two, then you're just plain wrong.
And using tobacco is a terrible analogy. The problem came to light immediately once we tested the correlation between smoking and some forms of cancer, and the tobacco industry tried to supress this information. But the numbers were there. The same method shows nothing for vaccines and autism, and it's not worth the risk of doubting it when we have solid data showing how the vaccine is effective and important.
So fine, you may even say there's _something_ going on thats increasing autism on the population (even though that's just too hard to measure), but it sure as hell isn't the vaccine. - absurdist, on 09/06/2008, -2/+23The comments so far on this article do nothing other than to really emphasize the truth of the article. Post hoc ergo propter hoc, correlation = causation... it's all here.
- NewWorldEH, on 09/06/2008, -3/+21Themerosal is a compound. Just because a compound contains a certain element does not necessarily mean it takes on any properties whatsoever of that element. It's the same reason we breathe the oxygen that naturally occurs in the air (O2), but carbon monoxide is fatal.
I'd suggest asking a high school student to explain a little basic chemistry to you. - darienphoenix, on 09/06/2008, -0/+17Salt contains Chlorine.
RUN! - positron, on 09/06/2008, -2/+17"Autism is on the rise" == "They do scary stories about autism on the news more often"
- ironhide, on 09/06/2008, -3/+17Well, that makes you a special kind of idiot doesn't it?
- JigoroKano, on 09/06/2008, -0/+14Some food contain salt
salt is an sodium chloride
An sodium chloride is.....chloride
Putting chloride in babies isnt a good idea.
I dont mind you people feeding it to your children, but please dont look down on me and my wife (a nurse) for making sure we dont feed salt to OUR daughter. - Darthyoshiboy, on 09/06/2008, -0/+14Correction: They do not just think that they are smarter than "a doctor", they think that they know better than medical science at large and the majority consensus of doctors.
- jaswaters, on 09/06/2008, -0/+13First, most vaccines do not contain Thimerosal (or can be requested to be received without Thimerosal) and those that do only have Thimersoal only have trace ammounts (less than .01%).
Second, studies (by the CDC, FDA, and other independent institutions) have shown that Thimerosal in no way can be blamed as the cause for autism, ADHD, etc.
Third, you are putting your health and your child's health at much greater risk by not using vaccines. I would suggest you and your wife rely a little more on research and science (especially because she is a nurse) before making such drastic decisions about an infant's health. - Fabbyfubz, on 09/06/2008, -0/+12WHOA, BUT I STARTED TO SPANK MY MONKEY AT A MORE FREQUENT RATE AT AROUND 4 YEARS AGO. DID MY SELF-PLEASURING ALSO CAUSE THE HURRICANE??? Like the Butterfly Effect, but with my wang?
- jaswaters, on 09/06/2008, -1/+13I wouldn't give my kids mercury injections either, vaccinations on the other hand...
- Darthyoshiboy, on 09/06/2008, -0/+12"Can anyone sell me on the logical requirement for that?"
Hepatitis B in newborns kills. You are in a Hospital, where sick people go to be treated. There is a possibility that someone with hepatitis B has been treated or has been in the vicinity of where your baby is being born and cared for. The medical staff (while immune themselves, thanks to the requirement for hep B vaccines for workers in most hospitals) may have come in contact with someone that has hepatitis B and may currently be a carrier. Given that there are no issues with an infant having a hepatitis B vaccine, and the overwhelming odds that your infant will die if they come in contact with the virus without vaccination, it seems like a sound requirement to me. - spikeyone, on 09/06/2008, -0/+11In the US, thimerosal (the mercury containing compound) has been removed from all routine vaccines except for the flu shot (which is also available in several thimerosal-free versions). Others may contain trace amounts (thimerosal added at one point in the process, and later removed).
After they took thimerosal out of the vaccines, autism rates continued to climb. By the anti-vaxer's logic, thimerosal prevents autism. Yeah, shoddy logic.
Some forms of mercury are bad for you. Thimerosal has time and time again not been found to be bad for you, in the concentrations it is and was found in vaccinations. - ironhide, on 09/06/2008, -10/+21Ah digg, home of anti-science and conspiracy theory twaddle.
- jewishmafio, on 09/06/2008, -0/+11What the ***** are you talking about?
- podwich, on 09/06/2008, -2/+13I'm sorry you have a child with autism. It's gotta be rough to see your child developing normally and then change for the worse.
However, you do need to read the article. While the appearance of autism and the administration of vaccinations may be co-incidental, that does not prove causation. Moreover, as the article pointed out, causation has been disproven multiple times. I know it's tempting to assume causation based on the close temporal proximity of vaccination and onset of obvious autism symptoms, but one must recognize the truth. One interesting thing is that, if you could observe what was happening before the vaccination, subtle symptoms of autism may have already been appearing. This is not uncommon, further removing vaccinations from fault with regard to autism. - joe7845, on 09/06/2008, -0/+10It is completely false that the Amish don't have autism. It is also completely false that they don't vaccinate.
- kingmanic, on 09/06/2008, -0/+10There are many variations without Themerosal, and the diminished use of Themerosal has not lead to a diminished incidence of autism. Your logic is also severely faulty as other have pointed out.
- remccain, on 09/06/2008, -0/+9"but pharmacology isn't their major area of study."
Thank you! Isn't logic a required college course anymore?
Asking a doctor about the active ingredients in a vaccine is akin to asking a mechanic about synthetic motor oil. Yes, the mechanic can tell you the reason *why* the oil is good for your engine, but I've yet to meet one that could tell me why those ingredients work the way they do. Chemistry is not their forte. - RobotBuddha, on 09/06/2008, -0/+9"Try asking for it from your child's dr. just for ***** and giggles."
Try asking the guy delivering your pizza for information on how the dairy cows were raised. The doctor's going to have a general idea of how the active ingredient works, but pharmacology isn't their major area of study. - JigoroKano, on 09/06/2008, -0/+9For the moment they are probably protected by herd immunity. The number of unvaccinated has to reach a critical amount for the disease to spread. And guess what? There is the slim possibility they could affect some of the vaccinated... which is why public schools and hospitals don't want these kids in their populations... and I don't blame them.
- kingmanic, on 09/06/2008, -2/+11Note to Alarmist: One of the high correlating factors in autism is the age of the mother. Note the fact that the average age of a woman during their first child and last child has increased. Think that might have a link. The studies by both corprate and academic medical researches say it's not the vaccines. So stop endangering other peoples children in the superstitious belief that vaccines cause autism. Poor knowledge of science results in you!
- zombies66, on 09/06/2008, -4/+13Maybe autism isn't on the rise because of vaccinations. Instead doctors and medical professional have become better at the diagnosis. Stop being paranoid! Also if you don't vaccinate your kids I would consider that child endangerment. Vaccines do way more good then harm!
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -0/+9understanding the difference between correlation and causation is an essential ability - people who don't know 'post hoc ergo propter hoc' are at a huge disadvantage. It's sad, you're right.
- spikeyone, on 09/06/2008, -0/+8Hep B is vaccinated for at birth because a large percentage of those who have Hep B contracted it during childhood.
The number of vaccines received means little to nothing. If you look at the antigens delivered, you will see that the combined total in ALL routine vaccines today is much less than in a single vaccine of the past. - mrmiggidude, on 09/06/2008, -0/+8What the ***** is he talking about?!
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -2/+10It couldn't be something obvious, could it? Like, to prevent them from getting hepatitis b? I mean, occam's razor, right?
- kingmanic, on 09/06/2008, -0/+8So you can't rule out HD TV's which have gained popularity over the last 5 years or maybe it's Bush. His aura of evil may be the cause and the time line is right?. . . Maybe it's you? Digg? While expecting major corporations to always act in the interest of people is silly, it's equally silly to suspect everything. Autism has a strong genetic component is occurs in family lines. The vaccine / autism connection has been debunked by not only pharmaceuticals which may have a vested interest (not really vaccines aren't very profitable, they only make them because the governments mandate them) but also by academic institutions. At this point with this much research most of the major vaccines and vaccine additives have been cleared. Frankly it may simply be what was "retarded" is now "autistic" skewing the stats. As well advances in prenatal and neonatal care in the last 50 years ago now means those who may not have normally survived a premature birth do and that may be related.
Research has cleared most vaccines, more can be done to clear of them but to refute the research and cling to a an idea despite the science saying you are wrong is pretty counter productive. - bobbi21, on 09/07/2008, -0/+8.. uh yeah.. what's so hard to believe about that? This is the basis of all science.
i.e.
A= in recent years, the rate of abortion has gone up
B = in recent years the temperature of the earth has gone up.
If we don't have any real studies, you'd conclude that abortions cause global warming. or global warming causes abortions. Which I hope u'll agree are all idiotic theories. Just because 2 things happen at the same time doesn't mean they're related.
A= I carry around this special pen in my pocket every day.
B = I have never been attacked by tigers
Therefore My special pen prevents tiger attacks. You're using the same exact logic for MMR and autism. Seriously, why do you have such a hard time understanding science? we learn this in grade school.. - jbella, on 09/06/2008, -3/+11But you see... that is the problem.
There are so many horror stories.. but no correlation to the vaccination schedule.
Personally. I think it's the #3 Huggies that causes autism. Seems like there is a pretty strong correlation with babies developing autism shortly after switching to #3 Huggies. - NoQuarter, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7Plenty of vaccines are effective given post-exposure. People get tetanus boosters after doing something they consider risky (standing on rusty nails, etc.). The same is true for Hep B - the virus has an incubation period of up to six months in which the immune system can respond to the vaccine (which contains only part of the virus) in preparation for when the disease takes hold.
- kingmanic, on 09/06/2008, -2/+9It's not really, they are a one time (or annual in the case of flu) product that costs a lot to cultivate with lean margins. They are profitable but things like Viagra are more so as they are easier to make and sell for much more and are used much more often. Vaccines are big pharama's "charity" to humanity. Vaccines and civil engineering have done more to extent life and prevent human misery then almost anything you can think of.
- inactive, on 09/06/2008, -3/+10Save money for the funeral then.
- yogiincork, on 09/06/2008, -0/+7nursing is a honorable job, but certainly does not mean she has any authority in medical research/chemistry
- enantiodromia, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6you sound very well educated
- deadbeat75, on 09/06/2008, -1/+7I wonder how many kids have died from preventable diseases because of Jenny McCarthy. Even with relatively safe diseases like measles, fatalities are not unheard of.
- Kbriggs, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6Maybe an over diagnoses problem.
- shig, on 09/06/2008, -2/+8http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/thimerosal.htm
Read. Read it for yourself... it's the only way. Read the vaccine information card that lists all the ingredients to the liquid you're injecting into your body. - Laminarcissus, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6Nothing, he's dead.
- joe7845, on 09/06/2008, -0/+6There are many right-winger anti-vaccine conspiracists, and plenty of pro-science liberals. I don't appreciate the "hippies" bit.
- mooben, on 09/06/2008, -6/+12do umbrellas cause rainstorms? it should be well known by now that the types of minds we have seek patterns (evolutionary theory says this was a reliable cognitive mechanism when we were doing most of our evolving in the grass plains of Africa--not so hot in our modern scientific world). correlation does NOT equal causation, full stop.
