- michaelpinto, on 01/07/2009, -4/+37It's a bit cheap of Autism United to use this kids death to grab a headline - especially as the medical history of that child was private (which means they have no real way of knowing what was what). Travolta is a public figure, but his family should be off limits...
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -3/+30Gee, isn't it kind of douchebaggery for them to reach out to him, not even knowing if his son had autism, just to get attention and donations. Faking sympathy to exploit his "fame" to get media.....deffiantly douchebaggery.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -8/+30His religious beliefs may have been part of why his son is dead, and actually very probably are.
Should freedom of religion extend to being able to kill your own children with your willful ignorance? Of course. Certainly. Religion is *all about willful ignorance*.
But when it happens, you better ***** bet that there will be discussion. Back off. - tremerevamp, on 01/07/2009, -2/+18http://www.autismunited.org/contact-autism-united
Just fired off an email.. the last thing the autism community needs is another dickwad advocacy group claiming to represent their interests in the media. - shutaro, on 01/07/2009, -4/+18His death was Thetan-related.
- jbmcb, on 01/07/2009, -1/+14Scientology seems to deny the existence of any sort of physiological problem. It's thetans, all the way down.
- chuckDontSurf, on 01/07/2009, -2/+13I can't believe people dugg you up, you ***** douchebag. Regardless of his religion, his *son* died.
- protogenxl, on 01/07/2009, -4/+15But Scientology neither confirms nor denies the existence of autism
- LucasJ218, on 01/07/2009, -1/+11I feel bad for the kid. I feel bad for people that are brainwashed.
But Travolta, brainwashed or not, may have let his child die out of negligence - because of a ***** cult... - GeorgeStone2, on 01/07/2009, -0/+9They say his son died of saturday night fever.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -4/+12@cardyology:
It's not about religion. I don't care if he believes pink fairies live in the clouds. Yes it's sad, but seriously, READ UP ON SCIENTOLOGY. All you people saying, "Scientology isn't bad" really have not done any research on how it ***** up people's lives.
Cults are bad. Scientology is a cult. - jrussmlr, on 01/07/2009, -12/+19Using his son's death as an excuse to slam him for his religion...
- eadnams, on 01/07/2009, -1/+8http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28539943/
the young man who often smiled but was never heard speaking
"I observed that he was significantly mentally handicapped. ... John always communicated to him as if Jett could completely understand him. .."
http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNew ...
It is believed that he could not speak, one of the symptoms of autism, and rare video footage of the teen has shown him making repetitive hand movements, another hallmark of the condition. - noisician, on 01/07/2009, -1/+8Another scary thing is that there are lots of deluded loonies hanging around the Autism camp as well (eg: Jenny McCarthy).
- TheUngod, on 01/07/2009, -3/+10The same thing has happened plenty of times when Jehovas Witnesses declined necessary blood transfusions or surgeries for children, causing their death. Not sure why it should be any different for this BS religion.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -5/+11"scientology did not kill travolta's son. you guys are ***** retarded."
Apparently you're the one that is retarded. They didn't seek the necessary treatment because of their religious beliefs. Sounds to me like Scientology IS the problem here. - blah247, on 01/07/2009, -9/+15All religion is made up.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -2/+8It isn't, and thats kind of the point. Jehovah's witnesses are insane cultists who kill children according to their religious doctrine, and so are Scientologists.
See? easy. - Lokonopa, on 01/07/2009, -2/+8Who could make a heartless comment in regards to the death of Travolta's son? Who cares if he was born into wealth and fame? He had a history with Kawasaki Syndrome. Serious complications can result in an aneurysm. Though, the fact that his religion forced him to ignore his son's condition, if he is autistic, is disgusting.
- dogstylee, on 01/07/2009, -0/+6Oh look a bandwagon.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -5/+11GOOD.
About someone else has the balls to tell him what needs to be ***** said.
Sick of people thinking Scientology is some run-of-the-mill religion on par with Christianity or any of the other BS - it's a dangerous cult that's been well documented as something designed to leech off its members' finances. It goes well beyond "I don't agree with Scientology" and more into "This ***** needs to be crushed, now, and all its members need a slap in the ***** face to get back into reality and stop ***** with their own well being and the well being of those around them."
While Christianity and the others have equally absurd beliefs, at least there's no threat to living if you dare to switch to another religion, nor do they demand payment to learn about the Gods. - ZeroSum1975, on 01/07/2009, -1/+7A child dying way before his parents is one of the worst things that can happen to a human's heart and soul. Everyone should really just back off. For a week at least...
- eadnams, on 01/07/2009, -2/+8I respect most beliefs/religions... Scientology is neither, it's a corporation, a fraud, and a vehicle of destruction, both of families and lives. It sows lies that kill its followers(victims) and/or empties their wallets completely. It should be treated as any corporation with such abhorrent practises.
I hope that its victims will one day have freedom. - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -3/+8@cardyology:
I have a number of years of direct contact and experience with the church of scientology, have been "dead agented" a number of times, and was named on multiple lists (incorrectly, thank xenu) surrounding the original Fishman document release, and have been personally threatened a number of times by Helena Kobrin herself. I am not associated with 4chan, but I do know what I'm talking about. - Dreeon, on 01/07/2009, -6/+11All Hail Lord Xenu...bunch of crazy Scientology nutters...
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5Oh. Well it wasn't very clear to me at all. Carry on.
- chrissku, on 01/07/2009, -4/+9Maybe they could wait until after his son's funeral to 'reach' out to him?
Are they going to approach him during the 'downtime' of the funeral service to have him fill out any necessary paperwork? - ZeroSum1975, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5Where did you read that from? If you have a link to that info that would be cool...
- krahzee, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5How about the kid then? He doesn't deserve the respect of not having his death turned into a PR stunt? I could care less about his parent's religion, but to make his death into some sort of sick PR move is wrong.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+6Shouldn't have been riding his Kawasaki in the tub...
- eadnams, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5I respect that belief too, hehe
- eadnams, on 01/07/2009, -1/+6with Autism, you teach them how to communicate through other means if you have to.
They never acknowledged he was autistic (Tho other family members did). Therefore, never helped him as they should have. - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -2/+7They should reach out to this guy, too . . .
http://digg.com/educational/Best_Forum_Ever_1090_t ... - DanBoodro, on 01/07/2009, -1/+6Is that not what Scientology did as well? I for one say ***** SCIENTOLOGY!
- metrodigg, on 01/07/2009, -1/+5A little douchebagish, "this could be an opportunity for them to use their son's death and their celebrity to help thousands of parents, who are caring for sick youngsters", but in the end it's not for profit. It's not as bad as avoiding treatment for your son because the writing of a science fiction writer consider his condition "psychosomatic". I think the bigger douche is obvious.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -6/+10A little harsh
- PuckishGrin, on 07/14/2009, -1/+5"Other celebrities, such as actress Jenny McCarthy, already work with Autism United."
Oh great, they're associated with a crazy anti-vaccination celebrity. And yup, their web site says "Many researchers believe that the evidence indicates that genetically-susceptible children acquire autism through early exposure to some insult from the environment such as viruses, heavy metals, or possibly even vaccines."
This is either the setup for a joke, or they're a group full of idiots who haven't researched the very disease they're associated with. The scientific consensus is rock-solid: Vaccines do NOT cause autism. - babar77, on 01/07/2009, -1/+5"Should freedom of religion extend to being able to kill your own children with your willful ignorance? Of course. Certainly."
Actually I don't believe it does. You have every right to make yourself a martyr, you do not have that right to make your children martyrs. As a parent you have a legal, ethical, and moral responsibility to make decisions in the best interest of your child. I dare anyone to argue that choosing martyrdom FOR your child is in their best interest. They can make that decision for themselves when they are old enough to do so on their own.
The Christian Scientists who's children died of routine illnesses over religious beliefs are murderers and child abusers. John and Kelly are no different *if* they denied Jett medication and treatments that could've saved his life. That's why this is important. Do you express sympathy to negligent parents who's kids died due to their negligence (e.g. leaving a kid in the car during a hot summer day)? No, you express outrage.
The first amendment squarely places the rights of the individual over religion. Why? Because it allows me to choose my religion, a religion cannot choose me (via the State codifying a religion in law.)
I hold my outrage for John and Kelly because there does appear to be evidence they did give drugs to Jett for his seizures but stopped because of severe damage to his liver, not due to Scientology. However, it's hard for me to feel sympathetic because I am not ignorant of the ways of CoS, and can take nothing on face value especially since treating Jett in such a way, if true, would be like committing murder in the CoS's eyes. So unfortunately, I am left feeling only suspicion, unsure of what to believe. Which I feel is yet another moral wrong (obviously not legal wrong) committed by the CoS - robbing us of our humanity. - babar77, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4I'd be a little afraid of equating Scientology with a corporation here. Given the large number of corporate apologists on this site, you'd actually drum up sympathy for Scientology.
Common Digg Corporate Apologist: "Sorry I can't feel sympathy towards members of Scientology, they should've done their research and known it was a bad organization. Scientology is just trying to make a buck, if they didn't like, it just leave." - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+5Huh, they almost sound like scientologists. Oh wait.
- 0260, on 01/07/2009, -3/+7One group of nuts try to reason with another group of nuts? Right.
- rharris, on 01/07/2009, -3/+7Autism United... almost as big a douche-bag as Scientology.
Let the family grieve. And then investigate what the hell happened. - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -0/+41. Anonymous does not forgive.

You're right, because two other countries across the world are at war, we should totally ignore any other bad things that might happen elsewhere, because there's always something worse. - eadnams, on 01/07/2009, -2/+5His kid was never even taught how to speak or communicate.
- gopher043, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3so which is it? They didn't teach him to speak or he couldn't speak because of autism?
- danwallace, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4Why? Do you know anyone who wouldn't recognize John Travolta?
- lornefs, on 01/07/2009, -3/+6I don't know why everyone is picking on Travolta on this.
The guy just lost his son and there is no evidence that it had anything to do with his religious beliefs dubious as they are.
Scientology is evil not necessarily the people who believe in it although you could question their rationality.
Your wrath should be brought down on the Autism people led by people like douchbag of year for 2008 Jenny McCarthy.
They cause real harm with their anti-vaccination campaigns. -
