- PxCxG, on 07/17/2009, -0/+22So there really is just a fine line between artistic and crazy?
- macmcraeart, on 07/17/2009, -5/+27***** ...... if the CIA would stop beaming disparate images into my head - i could figure out what to say about tis article.
- ftc08, on 07/17/2009, -0/+14There's a very clear link between mental health issues and creativity. A very good chunk of the 'great' authors were believed to be manic-depressive, many inventors, many musicians.
As cool as this is, I am Jack's complete lack of surprise - TheScogg, on 07/17/2009, -1/+14I can buy this. A lot of what is considered good art are pieces that are distortions of reality (Dalie, Van Gogh, Picasso, etc.) People enjoy looking at fantastical scenes that they would be unable to recreate vividly in their own imagination. Being a little "off" (be it schizophrenia or a multitude of other mental illnesses) could give somebody that extra touch in showing the world something amazing and new.
- Pinkertinkle, on 07/17/2009, -1/+12but scientology said it was all due to xenu!
- theshizzler, on 07/17/2009, -0/+7Kay Jamison, a psychologist who has come out as a person with bipolar disorder, wrote a book about this called Touched with Fire. Definitely worth a library visit if you want to learn more.
- theshizzler, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5Who said anything upbringing and experiences having nothing to do with personality? They play a role in onset and probability of gene activation. But there are also huge differences in the activity levels of the prefrontal cortexes in bipolar persons vs the general population. RTFA and L2Science.
- lostarchitect, on 07/17/2009, -0/+5well, they could have just asked Sheogorath.
- anonymousmedic, on 07/17/2009, -1/+6Psychiatric Fail.
The disorder you'd be describing is Multiple Personality. A more accurate phrase would be:
"I'm the most creative person I know, because the voices in my head tell me so" - odetonarwhal, on 07/17/2009, -2/+7His name is actually "Dali".
- kaosethema, on 07/17/2009, -1/+5no ***** sherlock
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4Oh come on, it was funny.
- babalonanon, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4scientologists are just psychotic from Hubbard brain virus cooties
Scientology's Greatest Hits! WHY YOU SO KRAZIE, SCILONS?
http://digg.com/d1wQ91 - uncleosbert, on 07/17/2009, -0/+4i would be willing to bet that both schizophrenia and creativity relate to impulse control. artists are the people willing to make their ideas into reality, and shove them in other people's faces. i believe many many people are very creative, yet they never make that leap to actually picking up a brush or a pen.
- silverchrysalis, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3bit arrogant there, aren't we?
- Rocketbird, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3That's so cool! But it sucks so much that people like Silvia Plath can make such beautiful works and never have the ability to realize how truly beautiful the stuff that comes out of their minds is. It's a terrible trade-off, your sanity for the ability to make beautiful art and have your name be immortalized.
- Manworth, on 07/17/2009, -0/+3Maybe you're schizophrenic.
Or really creative. - uncleosbert, on 07/17/2009, -1/+3please review second to last paragraph.
- colasrtney, on 07/17/2009, -4/+5No, painting melting clocks isn't crazy.
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2The very act of creating something as abstract as a novel, a song, a film, etc.. it's quite obviously not logical behavior. The fact that such things have become so important in every society on the planet, however, is even more perplexing.
- anonymousmedic, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2Bravo Sir, Bravo. You win +1 Internets
- Eurynom0s, on 07/17/2009, -1/+2Makes me glad my "artistic abilities" amount to drawing squares and (really bad) stick figures!
- memper, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Unless of course he merely typed out what the voices told him to.
- bradleyland, on 07/17/2009, -7/+8I'm the most creative person I know.
And so am I. - X9001, on 07/17/2009, -0/+1Someone get this man a paint brush!
- ophello, on 07/17/2009, -3/+4Correction. Will the 4 fools who dugg me down please pull their heads out of their asses?
Granted, I'm basically talking to myself. Awesome. - annenk38, on 07/17/2009, -1/+1Only if you're the modern art type. I think Hitler had already labeled it "degenerate", thus beating the researchers by a few decades.
- Moralogic, on 07/17/2009, -1/+1Psychologists have known this for decades, but whatever.
- p3tari, on 07/17/2009, -0/+0anonymousmedic, you fail. you clearly have never read the DSM. if you have commanding voices in your head then it is most likely schizophrenia and not multiple personality. trust me, i'm on my way to get my doctorate in psychology. there are many psychologists who argue that dissociative identity disorder (or multiple personality disorder if you want to use outdated layman's terms) does not even exist!
- eviscerator, on 07/17/2009, -1/+1So basically I have a problem? If someone says a bunch of unrelated words I immediately get a picture in my head of those things combined, and and urge to draw it on paper. That must be artistic - oh no :P
- p3tari, on 07/17/2009, -0/+0moralogic, i don't think you understand. this article is saying that they found the actual gene that contributes to this behavior. sure, people have always noticed correlations between mental illness and creativity but i don't think scientists had discovered the gene yet.
- joshuaer, on 07/17/2009, -3/+2and to think i always said I was extremely creative!
- nemomarlin, on 07/17/2009, -2/+1Crazy Artists is almost as bad as nerdy scientists, mad scientists, or stupid jock stereotype. Please stop it.
- p3tari, on 07/17/2009, -1/+0horrible analogy. i get your point though you are just over exaggerating. we are not THAT clueless. if we were then how is it we are able to perform brain surgeries?
- UnReal31337, on 07/17/2009, -1/+0At least now we know what made Van Ghough so great.
- serracruz, on 07/17/2009, -5/+1tiresome noise, yet again you conflate cause and effect when the underlying mechanisms are acausal
- inactive, on 07/17/2009, -6/+2Evolution ?
LOL
hahahaahahaha - ophello, on 07/17/2009, -9/+4Our understanding of the brain and genes are about as advanced as a dog's understanding of algebra.
To say two things are "linked" means dick. - ophello, on 07/17/2009, -7/+2Will the fool who dugg me down please pull their head out of their ass?
- blckchamber, on 07/17/2009, -8/+2So your upbringing and experiences has nothing to do with your personality at all? But go on ahead, and use this "evidence" to fit your generalization of people.
