- billraydrums, on 11/17/2009, -0/+47I was prescribed paxil in 2002 for mild depression. However the drug caused me to lapse into "fugue" states where I would temporarily lose track of time. About 3 days after I started taking the drug I was driving to the electronics store which was about 5 miles from my home, and it was not until I was passing an indian casino 40 miles out of the way that I realized that I missed my turn.
Fast-forward to 2003. Long and short- I ended up with a revolver in my mouth, hammer back and about to off myself. My then wife and son were locked in the bathroom. I realized what was about to happen and "snapped out of it". As I was disarming the weapon it discharged in the house and I immediately called 911.
I was arrested, stripped of all my parental rights and spent 53 days locked in jail.
It took me 4 years to reestablish my parental rights. I did a lot of couch time and got my issues straightened out, sans any chemicals.
I can see how those mothers who kill their children methodically do it. SSRIs tend to cause one to get the impression that everything in your brain is "sunny & warm, 70º, and nothing bad is ever going to happen to you no matter what".
I can talk freely about my experience now and hope that I can help someone looking to take "the easy way out" of one's problems. Newsflash: A pill a day is not going to save you.
If you are suffering depression, start looking at your diet (refined sugars are the quickest way to get on the rollercoaster), how much alcohol you may be consuming, how much pot you smoke, etc. Your problems won't go away, even if you take a pill that makes you think they will.
And I fully understand that many people actually *do* have chemical imbalances. But there needs to be a more stringent vetting process to determine these things, rather than a doctor tacitly handing out these substances like candy, and getting a nice bonus from the manufacturer at year's end for their willingness to push the drug. It's sickening what the drug companies do.
And to pull the caboose on up, there's the lawyers' lobby that encourages this kind of system, as they stand to make millions on the class action suits that are brought about by "defective" drugs.
So...quick checklist if you are considering the route of SSRI drugs:
•Get into counseling
•Watch what you eat/drink/smoke/consume
•Get into a healthy habit such as walking or exercise
•Deal with your issues, lest they become a big scary monster.
And as easy as it sounds, I know there are people will have a hard time following such steps. I know that certain days for me I can barely get two thoughts to coalesce.

My mum also suffered from depression, and at its peak she believed that the color red was out to get me, and it was going to throw me back in time, preventing me from reaching 16 years old (I was 14 at the time). It was a horrible experience to see my mum completely crazy.
But the doctors gave her some medicines. It took about 5 years to find the right set of drugs, but they did find the right drugs for her. She's been fine now for about 15 years.
I'm sorry that pills didn't work for you, but please don't dismiss it for everyone else.
