- badqat, on 07/13/2009, -1/+22Gee, I bet folks never thought of that before!
- Kylde, on 07/13/2009, -0/+14you've obviously never been hooked geoken
- vajra918, on 07/13/2009, -0/+14Quiting smoking is the single hardest thing I've ever done in my life and most addicted people will say the same. It's apparent that you don't understand how difficult it is. I hope you never find out.
- snagglefoof, on 07/13/2009, -1/+14"hostility, agitation, depressed mood, suicidal thoughts and behaviors, and attempts at suicide"
Apart from the suicide these sound like the typical side effects of trying to quit. - IDroppedMyBeer, on 07/13/2009, -2/+14So this may be TMI, but I started on Zyban two weeks ago. I've noticed my once short temper has calmed down, I feel genuinely more light-hearted and my libido has gone through the roof. It's been kind of a miracle drug. (And yes, I don't have as much of an urge to smoke anymore).
Concerning the doctor being in the pocket of the pharmeceutical company: It was I who sought the anti-smoking aid and I chose between Chantix and Zyban. It's not always an us v. them, guys. - BalancingAct, on 07/13/2009, -0/+11Champix(that's what it's known as here in the UK) is quite frightening. I was thinking of using it to give up smoking because it's free on the NHS, but i decided against it after reading tons of user opinions of the drug:
http://www.thehealthierlife.co.uk/natural-health-a ... - Kylde, on 07/13/2009, -0/+10I was on Chantix, all the horror stories are true, night sweats, hallucogenic dreams, fever, the works
- warp99, on 07/13/2009, -1/+9I smoked for almost 20 years and used Zyban to quit in a matter of weeks without any signs of depression, hostility, or suicidal thoughts, well no more than usual.
- badqat, on 07/13/2009, -0/+7I'd select another doctor, just FYI.
Some of them are extreme advocates to certain pharmaceuticals...and I avoid them like the plague. - geniuslocimusic, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6yeah it does ***** with your head, but "self-control" isn't always effective against a product that was engineered to be as both emotionally and physically addictive as possible. Chantix worked for me, after about two dozen attempts at self-control over a decade.
-Cheers - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+6"doctors want you to know the risks included with using zyban. they can be depression, skin irritation, mood swings, tobacco cravings and in rare cases, death. talk to your doctor about zyban and how it can improve your life"
translation-
"you should never hear or see any advertisement for any non-OTC drug ever. there is a reason we dont sell them directly to consumers, so there is no reason to advertise to them. the big pharma companies trying to push their drugs have successfully taken over the government, so get used to eating pills you shouldnt" - AeroSquid, on 07/13/2009, -0/+5I took Chantix for 1 month and quit smoking after 24 years. I had vivid dreams which i enjoyed for the most part but no other major side effects.
- mindwolf77, on 07/13/2009, -1/+6They're all true ...and worse.
The first month is nice ...you lose the enjoyment you had from smoking -- easy enough to quit then.
Then you stop enjoying your relationships, your jobs, your friendships ....you get the idea. Almost ruined my life in a very serious and scary way. - mxxz, on 07/13/2009, -1/+6The best anti-smoking drug ever its called marijuana, only if its vaped or eaten tho.
- BobPea, on 07/13/2009, -2/+7Sounds to me like its most likely just the nicotine withdrawal ..
The new FDA under Obama is not messing around though - Multiple Prescription Drugs getting increased warnings on label, Warning on ZICAM, Issues take with Tylenol, Percocet, Etc., I mean even Cherrio's get's a letter from the FDA: http://wcco.com/consumer/cherrios.health.claims.2. ...
There is definitely a crackdown of sorts happening here - theartfuldodgr, on 07/13/2009, -1/+6I want to quit smoking, I seriously do. I've been smoking going on 10 years now. Everytime I light a cigarette, I hate myself for it.
- badqat, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4Congrats!
- guybrush3000, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4I totally agree. When I was younger a psychiatrist would constantly try to get me to take Ritalin even tho I'm not ADD and had a history of abusing Ritalin (snorting it to get high), which he was aware of. I couldn't fathom what his motivation was.
Also, on the topic Zyban. That is the same as the depression medicine Wellbutrin. I was prescribed Wellbutrin once (despite being diagnosed bi-polar, not depressed) and that basically destroyed my world. I couldn't sleep, was hallucinating often, and when I closed my eyes I would see screaming faces stretching back into infinity (no joke). It almost pushed me to the point of suicide. I did stop smoking until I went off of it in order to save my life and sanity.
Then some doctor prescribed Zyban to my schitzo uncle to quit smoking. I found that shocking and irresponsible. How could any doctor in his right mind give such a potent mind altering substance to a schitzo? He did quit smoking, and he also let me know that he had become capable of controlling other people's minds.
It's beyond sickening what is going on in the prescription world. The big question is, Why? - snagglefoof, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4You'd like to think so, but quitting cold turkey (while it is the most effective) is incredibly hard.
I've heard that nicotine is more addictive than heroin. - BotchaMcCoola, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4True there are dangers from cigarettes especially (inhaling acrid burning paper? yuk.) But there are many benefits from inhaling the oxidized nicotine (gaseous niacin). We need to isolate that from all the burning trash that damages lung capacity though. We will solve the problem eventually. Bank on it.
- charmedguy18, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4Um Zyban/Wellbutrin does not affect serotonin. If affects the chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine. It is a selective norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake inhibitor (SNDRI). It is related to selective serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SSNRI) (effexor, cymbalta) but it does not aid in the reuptake in serotonin at all. So this is inaccurate in that sense.
It works for smoking by aiding in the reuptake of dopamine in the same spots of the brain that nicotine does.
It can make you (more) depressed and it has the same side-effect profile of most other antidepressants. So in that sense, the article has some accuracy. - doctechnical, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4Dude, if he were a smoker he never would have asked such a stupid question.
- omnithought, on 07/13/2009, -0/+4If you really want to quit cigarettes, check out e-cigarettes. There are a couple of good forums online that will inform you of different devices and of various reputable (and warnings of non-reputable) suppliers. Just google vapers forum or e-cigarette forum. It basically lets you get your nicotine (or not, if you use 0mg liquid) in a vaporized form. No stink, no cancer-causing chemicals, and lots of people are quitting smoking within a month, if not a couple of weeks with "vaping" rather than smoking.
Research for yourself...but I've found it to be an awesome alternative. Plus, lots of yummy flavors! - falser, on 07/13/2009, -1/+4I wasn't cool enough in high school to smoke. That's why I'm on digg.
- inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3You are 100% correct.
<3 my vaporizer. - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -5/+8shocking that ***** with your brain chemistry instead of using self control might have some unwanted side effects
- theartfuldodgr, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3Question, how much does Zyban cost for a prescription? I don't have health insurance but I want to quit smoking badly and I think this would do me better than all of the patches and gum I've tried, I just don't know if I can afford it.
- YoctoYotta, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3While psychologically hard, quitting smoking is a piece of cake physically. I smoked a pack and a half a day for about four years (and was smoking slightly less quantities for four years prior) and quit with little more than a big bag a Dum Dums and self control.
Coffee has far worse physical withdrawals. Try drinking 16 cups a day for several years and then quit cold turkey. You'll be physically incapacitated for a couple days and will have a severe headache no amount of pain relievers will fix. I literally couldn't stand on my own two feet without bracing myself against furniture and the walls. - jawbreaker4fs, on 07/13/2009, -0/+3*****. I still really really want to smoke, and I quit using Chantix over a year ago. I still have a deep, yearning desire to smoke. I love the smell and taste of tobacco.
I was able to quit, even though I didn't really want to, using Chantix. Get off your high horse. - grafenberg, on 07/14/2009, -0/+3rather be fat than have ***** up brain chemistry and not be able to feel emotions. Those are the standard side effects. the bad ones are: sever panic attacks that last for weeks, voices in your head, suicide.
self control is a better option than a chemical lobotomy. - easternguy, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2I took Zyban as Wellbutrin; the same drug, but as a different name, when it's prescribed as an antidepressant. I'm not sure why there'd be a surprise that this drug would have "psychological effects" when it's prescribed as an antidepressant.
For me, it was fairly uneventful. Side effects: when I went outside, the change in light freaked me out a bit; I'd squint a few times, adjust to it, and move on my way. A bit weird, but that was it. As compared to other anti-depressants I was on (Prozac, Celexa, various others), it was great; not because it helped me, but because it had no bad side effects. The others were serious nightmares (literally and metaphorically), and it took awhile to recover from all of the bad side effects. I would never touch them again.
My depression was situational, as I believe many are; even generalized depression, I believe can be traced to specific situations. Work on the situations, don't mask the problem with drugs. The side effects of most anti-depressants were so serious, they were, well, depressing. (e.g., not being able to feel an orgasm, wtf?????)
There are no doubt people with chemical imbalances, for whom antidepressants work, but I think they're way over-prescribed, and can have some seriously bad effects.
But as far as bupropion (Zyban/Wellbutrin) goes, It's a pretty tame drug, in my opinion. YMMV. - 21angel007, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3i was on champix for about 2 months before it started to turn me into a 'bipolar' individual. its scary how much drs try to endorse it. they think any pill is Gods gift to men and a solution to any problem.
- spectecjr, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2I've had some of the visuals with Wellbutrin - so I stopped taking it immediately. Nothing worse than driving up to a traffic light, seeing it turn from Red to Green, and then driving off and seeing a disembodied traffic light in your visual field turn from Red to Green as well - and that was after one dose for me.
Sounds like the reason he prescribed Ritalin for you, tho, was because he thought you were self-medicating for the condition. - maliath, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_effects_of_tob ...
Over 160 references on that page alone.
But, we all know people like you will never be convinced by controlled experiments or sound reasoning. You are part of a belief system. It's quasi-religious, and it's not worth arguing with.
Good day. - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2the psychological effects of quitting smoking are being an irritable bastard with a hair trigger. it passes just like the cravings.
- soulonfire928, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2My GP gave me Wellbutrin (same ingredients as Zyban) to quit smoking and I had been doing really well on another antidepressant I was on. Then within 2 days I had a complete personality change & became ridiculously suicidal in no time. I was such a bitch to people at work-and depressed or not & quitting or not I'm not a mean person. 4 days later I stopped taking it & almost immediately returned to normal. I will never try any anti-smoking drug again.
I heard from the nurses that out of all the antidepressants, Wellbutrin seems to be quite a trouble maker with people just randomly acting radically different than normal, & just acting downright nasty on it. - iamacyborg, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2That's dead on, actually. These drugs work (generally) as dopamine-reuptake inhibitors which is the same chemical pot acts on, except pot is a direct dopamine agonist so it works much better. The reason these drugs use the much weaker method is because they don't want you to be able to get high off of them.
- TomT127, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3Tell you what geoken. Take up smoking for a month then tell us how easy it is to quit.
- warp99, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2I was able to get Zyban for free through a stop smoking program that was introduced by the State of Iowa with some of the funds from the tobacco litigation settlement.
I would check to see if there are programs in you area. You may be able to get most if not all of the cost covered for nothing. - enantiodromia, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3wow, mood alerting drugs may have psychological effects? you don't say!
/did Zyban for a few months, it worked ok, but i hated the fact i had no emotions about anything, even my mother dying in front of me. Zyban made me feel "meh..." about everything. - geniuslocimusic, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2I took Chantix, but I only took it for 5 days. They recommended 3+ months. I was very happy to stop taking it after the 5 days because it messed with my head pretty bad. AND THE DREAMS.....JESUS....I've never had dreams in my life like the ones I had over those 5 nights. I can't even describe it. Anyway, it did get me over the worst of the physical withdrawel and I'm happy to say I haven't had a smoke in well over a year. :)
- jfoobar, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3Both my wife and I quit smoking using Chantix with no noticed ill effects whatsoever. I haven't had a cigarette in 10 months.
- underlord2, on 07/14/2009, -0/+2@nightlight7
You work for the tobacco companies, don'tcha? - asgardshill, on 07/13/2009, -1/+3Its simple to quit smoking. I've done it over 1500 times.
(And yes, my health plan doctor has been pushing Chantix on me since last year. I told her to stick it then and I continue to tell her to stick it today. Far better to lose 1 or 2 years off my life than suffer the almost acid flashback-like dreams, depression, and wasp-like short temper Chantix gives you). - guybrush3000, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2elhaf, i'll tell you from experience, that's definitely not the case. Quitting smoking is difficult but doesn't ***** you up like taking Zyban does. That drug is more intense than almost every illegal drug I've taken.
- nightlight7, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2If you are smoking supermarket junk cigarettes, you are likely not smoking tobacco leaf, the 'gift of gods', at all but "tobacco sheets" (chemical laden reconstituted scraps of tobacco plant, glue, flavors, coloring,...). Further, if you smoke filtered cigarettes, you are also inhaling non-biodegradable synthetic fibers which cause caughing and lung tissue damage. In contrast, the plain natural leaf smoke is the kind of stuff that cells have been happily ingesting and metabolizing ever since the first life arose on Earth in some lightening scorched primordial soup few billion years ago. In recent years you're also smoking highly toxic fire retardants (due to so-called "Fire Safe Cigarette" laws in most states).
I smoke oldfashioned hand rolled cigs, the way my granfathers and their grandfathers did for centuries, from natural, additive free tobacco leaf and haven't seen docs or been sick in over 20 years. See the site at the 1st link above on choices of tobacco and methods of making your own. Throw away the supermarket junk cigarettes from the big tobacco, since that stuff _will_ kill you, as the packs say. - specialK16, on 07/13/2009, -0/+21 or 2 years of your life? Try 10 to 20 years.
- spectecjr, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2There are basically two genes that control the strength of cigarette addiction. Each comes in two variants. The combination of which genes you have for it determine how easy it is for you to quit.
If you smoke only when you drink, or if you never feel the need, you're not that addicted. It's nothing to do with willpower. - inactive, on 07/13/2009, -0/+2me too. good idea, ill go vape some weed when i get off work
