- inactive, on 11/23/2007, -3/+49OMG the ignorance in this ***** article made me furious.
Female chimps will gang up on abusive males and rip their testicles off. They'll kill and exert vengeance on other chimps and on humans. Chimpanzees are among the most violent animals in the wild and are the most violent and most aggressive primates. They share 97% of our DNA.
"Successful evolution has been based on cooperation, not destructive conflict and aggression."
That's just plain stupid. Evolution is about survival of the fittest. Espescially among primates. Only the strongest will reproduce.
"The idea that venting anger to let off steam is necessary and helpful has become a part of popular culture."
Not venting anger leads to mental illness. Inmates are thaught how to express their anger instead of just acting violently (in Canada).
I hate pseudo scientist hippy idiots who try to convince people that their natural instincts are not justified. Anger leads to action. Stupid moron.
That felt good. - edstate, on 11/23/2007, -0/+34Serenity now!

- ArchieAndrews, on 11/23/2007, -1/+9Do what everyone else does to let off steam: kill hookers.
- SurlyDuff, on 11/23/2007, -1/+9Yeah I stopped reading after that evolution part. There are hardly any species that work based on cooperation and that's only if they're very very closely related (eusocial animals like bees or naked mole rats). You can't trust an opinion piece when the few facts involved are so obviously wrong.
- vervalsing, on 11/23/2007, -2/+8I think a lot of people interpret "venting anger=good" as going off and punching things when they get angry, which can lead the mind to associate violence with feeling better about anger. Like, if you tell your kid to punch a pillow when they're angry, they might be more likely to get in fights when they're older.
- SurlyDuff, on 11/24/2007, -0/+6Actually he liked the term so he included it in the fifth edition of Origin of Species.

- Kronos6948, on 11/24/2007, -0/+4I've learned to vent anger by playing music. I've turned it into a constructive outlet. If I didn't have a vent, I might blow up and hurt someone.
- Kallius, on 11/23/2007, -0/+4Maybe the server got angry for all those hits and went down.
- whatthefu, on 11/24/2007, -4/+8If evolution was about survival of the fittest don't you think Darwin himself would have coined the term, instead of Herbert Spencer who applied it to sociology?

- Marrach, on 11/24/2007, -0/+3 This article is an attempt by Psycho-Socio-Tyrants to make us believe that being Angry is a form of Mental Illness. When You get angry, You are either in need of medication or you're being childish. But when THEY get angry, it's validated.
Fools-- even a little child will get angry NATURALLY. Anger IS a Vent.
When someone NEVER, EVER seems to get angry-- that's when you need to worry. And keep in easy reach of any Exit Doors. - bungoman, on 11/24/2007, -0/+3"Successful evolution has been based on cooperation, not destructive conflict and aggression. Even primates fight in an organized manner."
Based upon that sentence alone I can conclude whoever wrote this doesn't understand evolution at all and probably doesn't know what they're talking about. If conflict and aggression gives an organism a greater chance to reproduce then given enough time the genes responsible will fixate. "Successful evolution" is a horrible misnomer since evolution has no direction. http://www.overcomingbias.com/2007/11/the-wonder-o ... - halligan00, on 11/23/2007, -2/+5Wordpress blows...
That being said, it's an accepted theory that /social/ evolution favors cooperation. The biggest and strongest might win the right to reproduce, but in human evolution, the ability to use a complex language allows the less-than-biggest & strongest to 'gang up' on the biggest and strongest to enforce a more equitable sharing of resources and mates.
Also, a species that uses social constructs has an evolutionary advantage over ones that don't. - iiDLii, on 11/24/2007, -0/+2http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/03/04/national ...

- JohnFour, on 11/24/2007, -0/+2"Myth 1: Anger and aggression are natural for humans "
"When people feel threatened, it is natural for them to feel anger."
Hello. - victrola, on 11/23/2007, -1/+3Yup. Myself and everyone I know needs to read that. Just in time for the holidays!
- Boober1350, on 11/24/2007, -2/+3I am a primatologist who studies chimpanzees in the wild and just wanted to set the record straight. ElAssoWipo is completely wrong about chimps and obviously does not know what he/she is saying. These are just the common misconceptions that people get from the media about chimps:
- Chimpanzees and humans share 98% of their DNA
- Females do not gang up and abuse males. The aforementioned incident only occurred once at Gombe, one of a multitude of chimp sites.
- There are no reported cases of chimps killing an adult human, and no proof that a chimp killing another chimp was due to "vengeance."
- Stating that chimpanzees are one of the most violent animals in the wild holds no scientific or factual basis in the least.
- "Only the strongest will reproduce" is incorrect. It has been proven that low ranking males are usually the individuals that sire most babies.
I have no comment about your position towards the article in question, but have a great interest in the correct representation of primates. - MasterOrange, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1Mirror please!
- arbulus, on 11/23/2007, -0/+1Damn you semantic web!
- inactive, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1"Most disputes within a community can, therefore, be solved by threats rather than actual attacks. However, the males of a community regularly patrol their boundaries, and if they encounter individuals of a neighboring community they may attack with extreme brutality. The only individuals who can move freely between communities are adolescent females who have not yet given birth. They may transfer to a new community permanently or, having become pregnant, move back to their own natal group."

Except 90% of wordpress beat me to it and beat themselves up. - MunkeeBoy, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1I think they meant Venting as in showing your anger in it's true form, rather than expressing as in re-directing it to other pursuits (music, art, writing etc.) The article acknowledges that anger is a natural re-action and can be positive, but I think what a large portion of you are missing is the fact that anger has become toxic and misdirected. To use anger in a healthy way is good for evolution (protection) to use it in a toxic way is unhealthy (destruction). In before the inevitable angry torrent of disagreement...
- Mothrog, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1"How to overcome from frustration?"
Don't read poorly written articles. I love how the idiot that wrote this says frustration doesn't cause anger, but then goes on to tell you how to overcome frustration to avoid anger in the Myth 3 section. - EdwardsNH, on 11/24/2007, -0/+1There was actually a study done very recently with rats, that showed if you zap them they show severe signs of stress (duh). But, if you give them something to chew on, they show less stress. If you give them another rat to beat up after being zapped, they show no signs of stress (But the other rat does).
- SilverBlade2k, on 11/23/2007, -2/+2Wordpress makes me angry...they wouldn't want to see me angry...
- maximumsteve1, on 11/24/2007, -3/+3uh, how many times will it take for you people to finally get that "survival of the fittest" does not necessarily mean strongest. It means fittest for their environment. Cooperation is essential for a group. Why do chimps live together in groups? Why do we?! All you can see is the war that primates have between different groups/clans/countries. Widen your scope before making a jackass out of yourself. Boober is correct why is he being dugg down?

- madmaxmedia, on 11/28/2007, -0/+0I'm not sure what the current consensus is, but I found this article from Wired-
http://www.wired.com/medtech/health/news/2003/03/5 ...
The more relevant issue is chimpanzee behavior as it relates to this article.I have no idea whether chimpanzees are horribly violent, gentle and peaceful, both, or somewhere in between. Regardless, I agree on the article- it's is new age drivel masquerading as scientific reasoning (even if well-intended.) - JohnFour, on 11/24/2007, -0/+0That kid makes me angry!!
- V1ncent, on 11/23/2007, -4/+4I get so angry when I hear about these angry myths!
- inactive, on 11/24/2007, -1/+1Then you're a primatologist who doesn't know ***** about primates.
Chimps share 97% of our genetic code. The only people who argue against this are anti-evolutionists who can't accept that they come from primates. Our DNA is 97% homologous.
But hey, if you don't believe me, just go walk around Gombe, with your testicles. You'll have to sign a release on your life when you pass the electric fence. - krisscofield, on 11/24/2007, -1/+1All three of you win.
- docjohng, on 11/25/2007, -0/+0Buried for being inaccurate. Horrible article with horrible non-factual basis, no research, just a random anonymous person's opinion masquerading as some sort of useful self-help article.
The worst kind of pop-psychology tripe that shouldn't be given the time of day on Digg, sorry. - madmaxmedia, on 11/28/2007, -0/+0That was one incident. The poster above was referring to his observations about general chimpanzee behavior, that they in general are not extremely violent animals. I don't know if he's right or wrong, but your link doesn't really prove anything.
I could find some links about some scientist who works with chimps and how well they get along, but that wouldn't really prove anything either. -
