- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -18/+83Americans are so fat.
But I'm wondering, when is it okay to go to someone and say, "you're fat. Why don't you do something?"
Eating is an addiction, and so is smoking. And I hear people bitch at me about smoking all the time.
Where is the difference? - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+68"mmmm 64 slices of cheese!"
"mmmm waffle runoff"
"mmmm forbidden donut"
"mmmm beer" - burke, on 10/12/2007, -3/+64In other news, McDonalds and Burger King have teamed up to produce the Double Big McWhopper with extra cheese, Bacon grease, and Pork rinds. This new sandwich is expected to usher in a new era of ass-fat delivery systems.
- drsnooks, on 10/12/2007, -13/+71"Americans are heavier than Mexicans, Australians, Greeks, New Zealanders and the British" - combined ;-)
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -9/+59Waddling along to save the mother ***** day, yeah!
- sinner0423, on 10/12/2007, -5/+51I just ate half a Pizza covered in bacon, and drank half a quart of egg nog.
America.. ***** YEAH! - AhmedOmran, on 10/12/2007, -4/+46America isn't the riched nation on the planet. Why does it have debts in the billions that it owes to countries like Japan?
- ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41Both businesses operate overseas too.
McDonalds is everywhere.
Don't act like its them. Its us who keep them in business.
Oh and your comment was funny - I'm no tbeing anal or anything, just saying :D - stian, on 10/12/2007, -7/+47Rich? your country has the most debt in the entire world (8 trillions++)!
Also have a look at your current account balance at the bottom here: https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/rankorder/2187rank.html - carpespasm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+44except the war against terror.
- 350Zed, on 10/12/2007, -7/+41McDonalds in Paris is currently servicing two markets:
1. thin French people who still consider it a novelty
2. fat Americans who are still hungry after eating at a French restaurant
I've been there, and the fat people are all ordering their Supersized Big Mac meals in *English* with *American accents*. - llbbl, on 10/12/2007, -10/+42We WIN at EVERYTHING .... mauahahahhahahah!!!@@@!!!! SCORE
- illuloid, on 10/12/2007, -14/+46@fiftyeggs: they're shouting at you trying to make you give up smoking because, as opposed to eating, you're actually trying to kill people around you when you smoke. Nobody dies of passive eating as far as I know.
- iching, on 10/12/2007, -17/+48Americans also don't get out much if you know what I mean.
- raabco, on 10/12/2007, -5/+32Apparently neither of you have been overseas.
Both the menus and the portions are very different from what we get here in the states.
It's a shame indeed that we're exporting this crap, but just because another culture has fast food, doesn't mean that they'll have the same poor judgement that we do, as Americans. - tuxidomasx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+27dang. i thought this said "the fastest humans on the planet"
then i read some posts and people were talkin about how fat we are.
so being a big nerd, i was like "well, going downhill, we would have more mass which would equate to more momentum, counteracting the forces of friction and wind resistance... so i guess that would make us pretty fast"
go USA?
:( - B0jangles, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27"So you Brits are like still walking? Oh my gosh, that's like so third world"
- unibomber999, on 10/12/2007, -16/+40Ameeeericaaaaaa, ***** YEAH!
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24While it isn't McDonalds' fault that people are fat, they certainly seem to encourage it. The largest drink McDonalds have in the UK is only slightly bigger than the small drink at US restaurants, for example.
- Thex1138, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25If they're that overweight they'll need bigger rockets to get to the moon in 2020
- elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -22/+43Alright, for one, this page doesn't actually have any statistics, so it's *****. (Comparing 2004 data to 1980 data is retarded).
For two, in terms of BMI, Americans are VERY, VERY close to the UK and other European countries.
For three, higher average BMI doesn't automatically translate to higher average fat. It is JUST as likely that Americans are simply more muscular than the rest of the world. (I'm not saying that I actually believe that, but the option is there).
For four, What the hell does drinking bottled water have to do with fatness?
You people need to get over yourselves. You prod Americans for their ignorance, and then spew huge generalities and stereotypes as if they're truth. Can't you see the irony there? - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -12/+30Oooold news. It also depends where you live .. West and East coast (esp. northwestern) Americans are far healthier than down south or mid-west.
- gavroche, on 10/12/2007, -1/+19In India, Mcdos only serve Chicken and Vegetarian burgers :-P
- Mengoxon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19actually, many statistics show that poor eating habits and overweight are more common among the poor than the rich... (within wealthy nations where food is affordable)
- raabco, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17You're not 'cheering' for the same America I love.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18and the war against drugs
- YouKnowWho, on 10/12/2007, -3/+18This probably explains the American fascination of huge SUVs and V8 engines. Gotta carry all that weight to work, or (God forbid) to the gym somehow.
- CoryTrevor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14It's easier than you think. If you do everything you normally do, just cut out the corn syrup, you'll lose weight. I did it.
- karuri, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18all you americans should come over to Africa for christmas. a good mix of mal-nutrition and malaria plus walking 10 kilometers for water will ensure you loose at least 50 lbs. Hurry while mosquito bites last.
- megaloid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16"Mmmm, farm subsidies..." *eyes roll back, corn syrup spills out of gaping mouth*
- pocuscadabara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13@stian
We should qualify the word "rich". When we Americans say we're rich we mean we live like we're rich. It has nothing to do with how much money we actually save and earn as a nation. Just ask Citibank, they'll explain it to you. - zacharysykes, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Damn! Looking at that national debt register, it's nice to see that Tongo is currently kicking our ass in terms of financial management.
All part of the same symptom that causes this obesity - consume like mad today, don't worry about tomorrow. "Mmm, that Super Sized Big Mac Meal will sure be tasty [right now]." "Mmm, another round of tax cuts sure will be tasty [right now]" - raabco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14All the easier to keep you all passive and docile...
eeeeeeeeeexcellent, eeeeeeeeeexcellent... - kokorhekkus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15@elnerdo
Because very little, if even anything, points towards americans being more muscled than other nations. There are no indications that americans work out more than others, on the contrary americans probably use their cars most in the world. And the illnesses directly linked to obesity are much more common compared to the UK (which also has an obesity problem but not as big as the US):
Diabetes
USA - 12.5%
UK - 6.1%
High Blood Pressure
USA - 42.4%
UK - 33.8%
Heart Disease
USA - 15.1%
UK - 9.6%
These figures were publish in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) so I'd say they're pretty reliable. So the problem you have is that you must first convince us in some way that american are more muscular and then you have to find an acceptable explanation to the increase in thge previously mentioned diseases that are well know to be increased by obesity.
That kind of argumentation without anything to support it is as smart as sticking your head in the sand. Why not just blame it on (like the joke above) "big bonededness" when you're at it. - Pigeon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Its getting worst in the UK as well as America.
BBC Three had a documentary on a couple of days ago following a fat guy around voicing his opinions about how fat people are laughed at and discriminated against. It seems like many fat people don't care about losing weight. The guy bought a ***** of stuff to eat that would last me about three days, he then ate the lot walking along. A couple of scenes later hes saying to a dietitian, "its not just eating less and doing more exercise is it? That doesn't help". I was just like WTF, you go and eat 6000 cals for lunch and say eating less won't help.
The guy then went on saying how "fat people are becoming the norm and we should live with it, and change to accommodate them". Changes include bigger seats on public transport, widening the ticket barriers in tube stations, theme parks that have rides that can take their weight. Many fat people he talked to agreed with him.
Don't they realize that this costs _lots_ of money? Angel tube station takes 45,000 passengers a day and has about 12 tickets barriers. If they doubled the width the station would have 6 barriers, _halving_ the number of people that can cross at a time making delays and probably costing TFL income.
Another thing that pisses me off about fat people is many don't care about anyone but themselves in public. They'll stop in doorways, narrow sections of shops etc. and now you can't pass. You'll be on a busy bus, which is nearly full, and a fat person will get on, now instead of a couple of people moving down, _everybody_ is moved around so the person can get on. Say 25 fat people (who often take up enough space for three normal weight people) get on the tube, that's 75 normal weight people who have to wait for next one because theres less space.
Humanity is already too crowded, being the weight of two-three people is just taking the piss. - shm1, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16I felt my arteries clogging up just reading that.
- RonAcierno, on 02/07/2008, -5/+17I know its not good to be over weight .... but id rather be part of the fattest country in the world then the skinniest....lol
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13and die halfway because your veins are full of liquid meat.
- DarkSenay, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Hate to burst your bubble guys, but 99% of the time the wealth of a country is measured in GDP or GNP, thus making America the "richest" country in the world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_%28nominal%29 - 350Zed, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Ya, rich like MC Hammer...
Livin' large on borrowed money one day...
...struggling to make rent the next day, after it all implodes as debts get recalled by others with REAL wealth. - freff, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I'm eating a breakfast of chicken-fried ham with a 3 egg steak and cheese omelet and a side of blueberry pancakes slathered in maple syrup as I read this. I have no idea where these people get these ideas from, and personally, I'm greatly offended.
That may just be heartburn though. - BGFeltenink, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11And the War against Obesity
- CiXeL, on 10/12/2007, -9/+19we'll be nice and plump so when the economy collapses and all overseas trade stops and we have to starve we can live off the fat reserves for awhile.
- Mengoxon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13powerful?
You can bomb other countries, but you can't control them. Real power comes from the ability to forge alliances - something the US lost under Bush.
Why is every South American country (other than Mexico) electing the left now? - blaze03, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Sorry. As an American, I don't understand the concept of "other people on this planet."
- Nogger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Reminds me of the picture of a moving staircase leading to a gym, titled "why americans don't understand irony" :-)
Aaah, here we go: http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e123/ghull1313/WhyAmericansDon_tUnderstandIronysma.jpg - tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Yep, it basically comes down to cooking your own food from scratch. Get rid of the processed food with the corn syrup and additives and start cooking decent food at home.
- Shirk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11To help the U.S. defend it's title, I'm going to go order a BK Stacker.
- kokorhekkus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11@2tomato
Whaaaaat... so you mean this picture:
