- xtonypiercex, on 11/11/2009, -3/+93will Obama listen to actual doctors?
- snootywaiter, on 11/12/2009, -1/+89Don't think that these baby steps aren't leading towards anything.
Things are getting better and better by the day it seems. I'm really excited for the day when I wake up, check digg, and see that the top article is "MARIJUANA LEGALIZED". - lukedamonkey, on 11/12/2009, -2/+69Legalizing it will get rid of the "look at me i'm cool doing something illegal" people. I'm glad.
- diggydougie, on 11/12/2009, -3/+40I'm sure you will see that time and time again. And then read the article and discover it's not what you thought. Here on Digg they have cured most diseases and solved the energy crisis multiple times already.
- Frankzulla, on 11/12/2009, -2/+37I'm not sure how much of a difference it will make, but it's great to see the AMA take a step forward.
- z0rk, on 11/11/2009, -2/+34Probably not... Just look across the pond at Prof. Nutt.
- atroxodisse, on 11/12/2009, -1/+28I'm totally calling in sick that day.
- Baconation, on 11/12/2009, -1/+21Wow, are we entering the age of reason or something?
I genuinely hope so. - nealdd, on 11/11/2009, -1/+19I hope so........
- monkiboi, on 11/12/2009, -1/+19Re-Legalize it!
- elliotys, on 11/12/2009, -2/+19Scientists FTW!!!
- Finsternis, on 11/12/2009, -1/+12I'm wondering why people are digging this comment down. Seems like a perfectly reasonable statement to me. Are you just mad because he decided not to smoke anymore?
- atroxodisse, on 11/12/2009, -2/+12Yay! You're letting me be myself!
- howdareyou, on 11/12/2009, -0/+10I'm for legalization of all drugs. But I honestly believe that had Obama come out in favor or even hinted in the slightest that he was considering ending prohibition, his administration would have come to a screeching halt and he wouldn't have been able to pass anything.
Knowing the history of marijuana, can you imagine if the first black president tried to legalize it?
Obama is a really smart guy, I think we all know that. Like you said, change comes from the bottom up. - thavi, on 11/12/2009, -14/+23I think it's funny that as soon as I grow out of my pot phase and 100% lose my desire to smoke it, they decide to get with this progressive thinking all around the country. To be honest, though, it was never as fun after I got comfortable with it and it wasn't a thrill to get away with smoking it.
- cornerback42, on 11/12/2009, -0/+8I wonder if it would be the most dugg article of all time, if that occurred. I'd be willing to bet it would be close.
- jasmus, on 11/12/2009, -1/+9I'm not sure promoting "clinical research and development of cannabis-based medicines and alternative delivery methods" is allowing you and your mates to get high... for science.
- gobbleplex, on 11/12/2009, -0/+7If that were the real logical reasoning used to outlaw it, they why have they not outlawed drinking straight-out water in an attempt to make it look 'cool'?
All that beer and soda is for total dweebs, after all. - Nowheredan, on 11/12/2009, -0/+6By that logic, wouldn't legalizing pot then make those people move to a more damaging drug like cocaine or heroin to get the same "look at me I'm cool I'm doing something illegal" thrill?
(Disclaimer: I support legalizing pot) - scourgge, on 11/12/2009, -0/+6living in the UK this doesn't immediately effect me, but to see people in America gaining ground everyday shows me it must be possible here too. although, got a conservative government coming in next so i wouldn't be surprised if we regressed to burning witches.
- BattleChimp, on 11/12/2009, -1/+5lepqq62, JOINED DIGG TODAY, yet makes sweeping generalizations about users
- WilliamDavis, on 11/12/2009, -1/+5Their previous stance made them look like complete doofuses. Too many people were getting accustomed to reality. Pharmaceutical companies will fight this to the death, though.
- Paranor01, on 11/13/2009, -0/+4I'm 41 and smoking daily.
Helps me think, move, work, etc etc - gobbleplex, on 11/12/2009, -0/+4All this says to me is that they are going to research ways to patent the active chemicals in the plant, sell them as expensive prescription drugs, and keep the plant itself illegal.
- aosmitty, on 11/12/2009, -1/+5Here we go..another comment that gets trolls all excited...
Typical life of them
1. Login to Digg, find comments that have grammar errors to criticize and attack the author, since trolls don't got any valid arguments
2..eat a hot pocket.
3. play some GOW, or counter strike for couple hours
4. Watch Television for a bit
5. Take another crack at Digg. Go to bed
Next day?
Same routine...
Typical troll - ole1kanobe, on 11/12/2009, -2/+6sacked
- lalandica, on 11/12/2009, -1/+4Honestly, it's about time the AMA started researching cannabis. It's been legalized in other countries with a much lower crime rate than ours for a while, we're very behind. Besides, as some of you have already mentioned, once it's legalized the thrill begins to fade. Eventually, it won't seem so exotic and taboo anymore; people want things more when they're unavailable. It's similar to anything else in that it's all about moderation - excess is never a good thing.
- sodade, on 11/12/2009, -1/+4Exactly. The AMA is just a pawn of big pharma. This just shows that big pharma has realized the potential of cannabis-based drugs that they can cook up in a lab and sell for big $. Watch this play out - I'm betting that Drs will get a bunch of new pills to prescribe and that they will keep the plant on lockdown status. Just like you can't grow poppies.
- rotundo, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3I've never smoked pot and I probably never will.
It should be legalized immediately because it's a ***** waste of resources to track down prosecute and incarcerate harmless pot smokers. No matter _what_ you think America should be doing more of, we can't afford to do more of it until we stop wasting an enormous amount of energy on this stupid drug war.
Any argument you have against it can be shot down by studying the results in Portugal. - athinnes, on 11/12/2009, -1/+4One more step
- seduirai, on 11/12/2009, -1/+4I agree. It's the same with alcohol. You reach an age where drinking until you throw up isn't as fun or cool as you thought it was. I don't know about 100% though. M-o-d-e-r-a-t-i-o-n.
- Nitrodist88, on 11/13/2009, -0/+3lepqq62: sounds like some pretty dangerous activity going on there. I think you just made the case for its legalization.
- Mujokan, on 11/12/2009, -0/+3It's quite a process to get the Attorney General to do it. Not something that's likely to happen soon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Removal_of_cannabis_f ...
- kaelyiesta, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3The AMA is a doctors lobbyist union, not a group of scientists. Their reasons for doing this will be purely monetary, mark my words. The most likely reasons is for research grants for members, funding for applications for marijuana and other business opportunities. Be careful not to assume every group who suddenly changes it's assessment from "it's in the same category as heroin" to "legalize it" is on your side. There are many ways in which legalization can be perverted by politicians.
- Sabin8, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3Nice, this kind of news is what gives me hope for human race.
- pagno, on 11/12/2009, -4/+6Mary Jane is a "dangerous nacrotic" in the same category as heroin...but the FDA allows pharma companies to market and sell their snake oil before its approved. That makes PERFECT sense to me.
- herozero, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3No I'm... doesn't.
- elliotys, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3What "snake oil" are you talking about, specifically?
- kubedawg, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2gobble, no because people still smoke cigarettes to look cool. If something is legalized, it will still have the cool factor for teens who still want to smoke it as a minor.
But, I'd rather have our youth smoking the occasional blunt than smoking a single cigarette because although inhaling any type of smoke can't be good for your lungs, cigarettes are actually really bad for you. Cannabis can actually be good for you.
My only worry is that because it can easily be baked into products like mac and cheese, cookies, and brownies, that kids could get ahold of it. - illepic, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2I think you just described everyone over 26 on Digg.
- imaxami, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2</drugwar>
- torrange, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2FTA: "In changing its policy, the group said its goal was to clear the way to conduct clinical research, develop cannabis-based medicines and devise alternative ways to deliver the drug."
Exactly my thoughts sodade, the delivery is through manufactured (Drug Company) compounds containing some cannabis. Legalization is a long way away. I'm all for it, but I am not holding my breath (OK - maybe only for about 10 - 15 seconds at a time). - Hazardc, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2You guys realize they are only promoting this because of the tides turning towards MMJ by the public, and the AMA knows that if they can't keep the lid on it, they are going to try to find a way to monetize it for their own gains, right? These people don't want you to be able to grow it and process it yourself, they want to sell you a pill that's supposedly "better".
This is not as good of a thing as some of you think. - bigwillystyle, on 11/12/2009, -0/+2dude your so close minded its not even funny. and your probably being dead serious too thats the worst part. you shouldn't make generalizations
- tek69, on 11/12/2009, -1/+3This is great, having a large respected organization step up to the plate is gonna help a lot. Lets hope this thing can keep its momentum.
- YagLana, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1...Then what would be good?
- anarchyinthekr, on 11/12/2009, -1/+2nice blog
- derektherock42, on 11/13/2009, -1/+2Either that or "Nickelback Breaks Up"
- sb66, on 11/12/2009, -0/+1What, bring science and reason into the drug war?
