- Zren, on 11/05/2009, -0/+49Why does the graphic has nothing at all to do with the data? I'd actually prefer a simple graph to this...flower.
- darklink3, on 11/05/2009, -1/+42Needs to be a little bigger...kinda hard to read.

- schmidtyboyas, on 11/05/2009, -0/+36Link to the original content, complete with a much larger, HQ image. Why not do this in the first place?

- tusharpant, on 11/05/2009, -0/+12the flower is nice and colorful
- benroy, on 11/05/2009, -1/+13"We won't stop being sick until we stop making ourselves sick. Because there is a point where even the most universal government health program can't help you. They can't outlaw unhealthy food or alcohol or cigarettes. Just pot, sadly."

- Khirzask, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5WIDE LOAD, COMING THROUGH.
- algaeturd, on 11/05/2009, -0/+5THIS is why the U.S. mortality rate is so high compared to other industrialized nations. We eat our fat asses to death and tell everyone on it's 'hereditary' or a 'glandular problem.'
Gluttons...spoiled gluttons. We get everything we want, we end up fat and miserable and we die early as a result.
And of course when I say 'we,' I mean 'you.'
It's sad. - Navicerts, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Combination of factors.
1) Unhealthy food, fast food, "cheap" food is generally very high in fat.
2) Little exercises, in most other countries people walk a lot more but in the US you need a car to do pretty much anything. It's just not possible to walk to many of the places people do in many other countries.
3) Portions. Our super sized McDonald's is delivered with about a half gallon of high fructose corn syrup. - diggdong, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5The person who chose the color scheme needs to be beat to death with a plastic chicken.
- morgens2, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4So glad I made the move from the 9th fattest to state to the least fattest state
- TheInimitable, on 11/05/2009, -2/+6So the least obese state is one in five... and the most is one in THREE. Both ends of that spectrum are disgusting.
- DrummerAndrew, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Colorado FTW. Mountains, beer, more sunshine than Florida, and the fittest girls in the country. 51/50 ain't bad at all.
- Halsfield, on 11/05/2009, -1/+5It really is about time for the majority of Americans to realize that alcohol/cigarettes/unhealthy food+eating habits are the real killers in this country and that the war on drugs is a complete waste of time and money.
To do so we need to get rid of the real criminal elements in the FDA/DEA/ATF/etc that are lying through their teeth to keep the war on drugs going and keep people drinking and smoking and eating like pigs.
While watching tv the other night : "Drug-free America!" ...5seconds later..."Please drink responsibly"... something isnt right here. Not to mention all the food ads that encourage people to indulge snack food cravings and show completely ridiculous portion sizes. - diguptruth77, on 11/05/2009, -0/+4Holy *****:
Vegetable oil is recognized as a drug for knocking out the immune system. Vegetable oil emulsions were used to nourish cancer patients, but it was discovered that the unsaturated oils were suppressing their immune systems. The same products, in which vegetable oil is emulsified with water for intravenous injection, are now marketed specifically for the purpose of suppressing immunity in patients who have had organ transplants. Using the oils in foods has the same harmful effect on the immune system. [E. A. Mascioli, et al.,Lipids 22(6) 421, 1987.] Unsaturated fats directly kill white blood cells. [C. J. Meade and J. Martin, Adv. Lipid Res., 127, 1978.] - AGONYTUESDAY, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3oh gods... I live in MA, and I really didn't think it would be in the last 10, never mind the last TWO. I see so many fat people in my state that it really depresses me that there are 48 states with MORE fat people.
- Hobbes24, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3how does an infographic this poorley designed get published?...christ...
- garryw, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Yes CO rules the universe!
- majordanger, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3Now I know what color to paint the bedroom.
I think I'll order a 5 gallon bucket of Delaware. - Liam000, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3God the "infographics" trend has reached annoying levels now... people people pls use infographics design to ENHANCE understanding of the data NOT to make it pretty and hard to read.
- diguptruth77, on 11/05/2009, -1/+4And somehow people believe that people make their own choice and aren't swayed by advertising and media.
- mikeyernst, on 11/05/2009, -0/+3or a map.... oh wait, the original report has that!
http://healthyamericans.org/reports/obesity2009/ - PiddlyD, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3Good for him. That doesn't make him any less of a *****-sucking douche-bag. In fact... it probably makes him MORE of one.
- Ghuru, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Grey and white? Really?
- diguptruth77, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3The lowest rate of obesity is 18.something? Jesus Christ, we're fat.
What's making us so fat? One very unlikely suspect...(among other factors of course)...Vegetable oil. Look it up. It's in EVERYTHING. You can't get away from it. - Schmich, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3"The FATTEST STATES in United Sates of America 2009"
and then they 'list' all of them... -.- - smileyouredead, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Increase the minimum wage and the cost of living increases with it.
- poitzort, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Does anyone know why Colorado is the least obese? Why Colorado? Colorado isn't poor nor the wealthiest. Colorado has a lot of open space, mountains etc., but so does Montana. Does anyone know?
- DiscoJohn, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Next time, use a table.
Crap like this still makes the front page, too. - lohphat, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Buried for using a Sears paint sample wheel.
- TheVirus, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2Who needs readability when you have pretty colors.
- Halsfield, on 11/05/2009, -1/+3I think you mean "healthy" not "good quality". Of course better quality food is going to be more expensive.
Eating healthy however is not more expensive. It may be expensive if you want the best tasting healthy food, but beans, rice, and a cheap meat choice(less popular cuts of turkey/pork/chicken/etc) is very inexpensive per meal compared to fast food or pre-packaged snack foods. - asgardshill, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2That is one of the worst infographics I've ever seen. What does a flower have to do with obesity? And the lack of readability (light pastel colors against white background), the way the data is ordered, everything about it is just horrible.
Newsweek fail. - MelissaOfTroy, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2i think he's pretty right on.
- elcalrissian, on 11/05/2009, -0/+2I'd like to see this data next to a chart representing % population on welfare/foodstamps/government aid by state.
- reviver, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1That image was pretty "graphic".
The blood, gore, and nudity were horrendous.
Especially that part where there was none.
._. - NathanLands, on 11/06/2009, -0/+1Doh, I grew up in Alabama which is ranked #2! Guess I'm glad I've spent most of my life in Florida and now California which are ranked pretty well:P
- jeteye, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Just click on the image to view then use the Zoom function under the "View" tab in Firefox to "blow it up!" or hit the Ctrl and hit the + key. FYI
- Akraz, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Yeah but you might as well list the "least fattest".. It's only natural.
- Leezus, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Just another point to top my list of reasons I need to move the ***** out of the south as soon as possible.
- BMPOvojvoda, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Missouri: come get yur fried chicken n' mashed potatoes and pepsi doughnuts
- Hybridle, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Ah, thanks
- bnk1310, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Interesting. It appears that the New England area is the least obese. Any guesses why?
- Akraz, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1I was going to ask why there are 51 rankings when I thought there were 50 states; this jogged my memory. then i realized they put "DC" in there.
I always thought DC was a state?
Nvm.. got my answer from someone
"No... it's not a state, and it's not in any state. It's a separate district. It stands for District of Columbia. It is surrounded by Maryland and Virginia, so it has suburbs in both states.
In many ways it's like a city - it has a mayor and city council, schools (among the worst in the country), police (corrupt), libraries, public works (inefficient and corrupt), and other city services, but they also have some powers of a state government (DMV, etc). Actually what's a big issue is that they don't have full representation in US congress, despite having more than a half million residents in DC proper. They pay federal taxes, but unlike actual states the District only gets a "non-voting delegate" to the House of Representatives and no representation in the U.S. Senate. This delegate can argue for or against bills but can't introduce legislation and can't vote on legislation. DC residents are not happy about that (rightfully so, in my opinion.)
But I digress. The short answer to your question is that it's a district and not a state. And don't listen to the person who said it's part of Pennsylvania - it's almost a 2 hour drive from the PA state line.

I'm originally from the DC suburbs, was a government and geography major in college and now work as a government management consultant." - MelissaOfTroy, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Um, vegetable oil is in everything because it's been an integral part of cooking for thousands of years. Olive oil is a vegetable oil and it's very healthy. Canola oil is often listed as "vegetable oil" and it too is healthy.
I think what's making us fat is that we are eating more. Portion sizes have doubled since the 70s. - MelissaOfTroy, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1vegetable oil is a killer, like dihydrogen monoxide
- DulcetTone, on 11/05/2009, -0/+1Food. It's what's for dinner.
