- superdigg, on 07/02/2009, -1/+42Inaccurate title - the author GAINED 3 pounds.
- dirtyfratboy, on 07/02/2009, -0/+22How many college students can avoid the computer 3 HOURS BEFORE SLEEP?? That's like asking me not to procrastinate.
- djblac, on 07/02/2009, -0/+22I read this at 3 am :p
- Bananaboy8000, on 07/02/2009, -1/+15I just read this tshi; It's 4:37 am and I'm feleinga fnei
- NeonDistraction, on 07/02/2009, -1/+13You mean it's NOT a good idea to stay up for 72 hours straight? Holy *****, I had no idea a lack of sleep was bad for you.
Did we really need to conduct an experiment to learn that?
Oh, and "Once it's gone, it's gone"? Seriously? - whoreable, on 07/02/2009, -0/+10Who needs sleep when there is WoW and Mountain Dew?
- diggit08, on 07/02/2009, -0/+11I've driven 2 days without sleep, and it is weird. I didn't drive like I was drunk but everything was an annoyance. I felt like a spoiled child.
everything everyone else does is wrong and you are right, that person trying to cut in? ***** him. Those pedestrians? ***** Them.
When you are awake for 48 hours and driving It even feels like the sun is against you for some odd reason, shining directly on you. I only drove around locally, no motorways or anything.
The backstory was just returned from the far east to England on Friday exam on Monday. Saturday night and Sundy night no sleep. I remember the tire being flat at one point but because I only had 20 mins to get to uni, I could not afford to stop and change it. The uni was only 5 mins away and I got there with a flat, called a friend gave him the keys and begged him for all that was holy to change the tyre while I gave my exam. Smoked the exam in record time, and left. Came home put frozen pizza in oven, ate said pizza and fell asleep on the sofa for 14 hours.
This is how I spend the majority of my uni exam days and I did great. This is not for everyone.
I thought I would provide a bit more in depth info because that article was crap and more of a tease than a damn article, I kept looking at the bottom for one of those annoying page 2 buttons but it wasnt there. - bluekangaroo, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9You can't catch up on sleep? I'm still sleep deprived from that sleep over in 2nd grade?
- lazyslacker, on 07/02/2009, -0/+9Really! If I can't use the computer, I might as well go to bed anyway.
- jmill987, on 07/02/2009, -1/+8Meh, there's plenty of time to sleep when you're dead.
- spookyttws, on 07/02/2009, -0/+7If you drink for three days straight not only do you drive drunk and gain a few pounds, but it's also a lot of fun. Plus you don't need to worry about sleep deprivation. Anytime or anywhere you feel like it you just lay down and pass out.
- fxu1989, on 07/02/2009, -1/+8>>Avoid stimulation like computer work or exercise for at least three hours before going to bed.
No need to worry about the latter. But the former, HAH, yeah right. - lazyslacker, on 07/02/2009, -0/+5I was hoping for a much more in-depth article, with a chart or two of data, and maybe even a video. Instead I got a dry excerpt from some lady's book about weight loss. Buried.
- GuitarHeroDenn, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4Staffing a convention next week for five days straight. Three days without sleep? Try five x.x
Come see my zombified state at Dexcon 12. - monkey1022, on 07/02/2009, -0/+4Not dugg for fail title.
- Darksoul, on 07/02/2009, -1/+4Yeah I love that *****, if that was true the hole would would basically be people walking around like zombies.
- gizram84, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3why is the title in the form of a question?
- JFitzpatrick, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3You can catch up on sleep. It just takes longer than people realize.
There was a period of time where I was working 12 hour graveyard shifts, teaching courses during the day, and sleeping only between the hours of 6pm and 9pm. A long, agonizing period.
It took me the better part of a year after getting off that crazy schedule to feel normal and refreshed again. - i20d, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Cause it's summer and you don't need to work on a paper.
- Rencio7, on 07/02/2009, -0/+3Really pathetic article not scientific at all.
I think there might be more info in the actual book seeing that it's an excerpt though..meh
Pointless - ceredron, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2Um.. unless you're functionally retarded, everyone knows a lack of sleep will lead to cognitive impairment and bludgeoning of the senses. Also, when your body has to act in an active state continuously, of course it's going to take and store every last calorie it can get, in anticipation of not knowing how long you will be forced to go out of your normal sleep pattern.
Yeah, *****, of course not sleeping for a couple days is gonna ***** you up. Also, 3 days without sleep, I think, is literally impossible, because after 36-40 hours or something you experience at the very least, micro-naps against your will. At least that's been the case with me, and the doctor I talked about this with (one time me and my friends overdosed on caffeine, long story short, we went to the doctor for help). I can only usually make it about 24 hours without passing out, and I know from experience that even 24 hours without sleep makes you drive like an idiot. - opticwind, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1Wow, this happens to come out the day after I pulled an all-nighter for exams (which I've never done before)...it really is kindof a weird drunkish feeling.
- taintedlove, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2To an extent, the notion that "you can't catch up on sleep" is total crap, if not just a philosophical question. If I push myself on little sleep for two or three days and then sleep in, I will sleep a lot longer than normal. If the body couldn't catch up enough, then we'd all be dead in no time from exhaustion.
- diggerado, on 07/02/2009, -0/+2***** sleep. I have better things to do. If I could only sleep 4 hours a day and operate like normal, I'd be thrilled.
- Alias1431, on 07/02/2009, -2/+4You can't really gain three pounds of fat in three days. Just water/bowel weight fluctuations like most women bitch about.
- antimatroid, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1Someone really needs to cure sleep, as much as I love it, if I could somehow be made not to, I could fill it productively fairly easily..
- TheBifman, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1And then ask you if you noticed...
and you're ***** no matter what you say - techdever, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1O RLY?
- damnshoes, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1maybe we are zombies but we just dont know it?
- jman583, on 07/02/2009, -1/+23:37 for me.
- saranagati, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1I've definitely made it 5 days with no sleep (including no micro-naps). The fact that i was in vegas though helped quite a bit i'm sure. It was work for 18 hours, gamble, drink and talk with the clients for 6, then do it all over again.
- jstem1994, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1In high school, I rode a Greyhound bus from Phoenix to Cincinnati. It took from Monday to Friday evening to do, and I don’t remember sleeping much of any of that. Friday evening I remember everything being very bright and fuzzy.
6 years in the Navy in a nuclear power plant will give you some sleepless stretches as well. - diggit08, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1Anyone else seen "The Machinist" or "Insomnia"? Those movies go to great lengths to actually make you feel like you are as sleep deprived as they are.
- MuntrealCanada, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1Friends don't let friends drive sleepy.
- ceredron, on 07/02/2009, -0/+1try taking a dozen Nodoz pills. There are concentrated caffeine pills on the market in many forms, and range from 10mg to 100mg strength.
We experimented with high dosages of caffeine, into the gram range. Thanks for playing, I'm sure you could have learned that anywhere. - arthursk, on 07/02/2009, -2/+2I'm sorry but you lost all credibility @ you and your friend od'd on caffeine, what are you 12 ?
- pwner, on 07/02/2009, -0/+0Never heard of summer classes I guess
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -1/+0I think I just found a way to loose weight without actually having to excercise
- inactive, on 07/02/2009, -6/+4zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
- pwner, on 07/02/2009, -11/+9WHY AM I READING THIS AND NOT WORKING ON MY PAPER
- Krissam, on 07/02/2009, -6/+3That's funny... whenever i play wow i suddenly get a irresistibly urge to sleep. Get a real mmo.... carebear
- friendlykiller, on 07/02/2009, -3/+0I have been awake for 2 days, and its morning now of my third... I usually go like this: 1 day with a nights sleep, 2 without, and then 1 to 1, and back again. Sometimes I need to do 3 to get work done. I'm also a competitive gamer and my team has never suffered from having me tired. Actually I don't ever really feel tired unless I go for 4 days.
I think the issue is if you sleep every night of your life, and then want to change to skipping a few nights - it can damage your body. I've been doing this for about 5 years. (mostly due to homelessness)
