- JonnyTrombone, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31BS- Tea tree oil is (anecdotally) an antiseptic and (proven) an antifungal. But it doesn't cure headaches and should never be ingested or applied to the ears. Buried as inaccurate.
- eleven, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27Just to add another angle:
"A recent article in the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) reported three cases in which young boys aged 4-7 began to grow breasts after using skin care products containing lavender oil and tea tree oil."

"TEA TREE OIL - TOXIC TO CATS"
http://www.messybeast.com/teatree.htm - MikeonTV, on 10/11/2007, -2/+22But what can it do about these damned threaded comments.
- peagle, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17This stuff is nothing compared to 'tussin. I cured a broken leg with just a teaspoon of 'tussin.
- WUThad, on 10/11/2007, -5/+17I know this is a no-no, but a couple of months back I submitted a story that said tea tree oil could actually have negative effects on health (or make superbugs stronger).
http://digg.com/health/Shampoo_is_to_MRSA_E_coli_Salmonella_as_Spinach_is_to_Popeye - vegasbright, on 10/11/2007, -9/+20Great. Now were going to see scumbag multi level marketing companies hawking this snake oil *****. Oh wait! we already do see that!
- Evildudetx, on 10/11/2007, -11/+19If its so great, how come big phara hasn't started using it for anything?????
- isntreal, on 10/11/2007, -1/+7Whilst gazing down the shirt of my stylist, she managed to convince me to buy some tea tree shampoo. She also said it was a great body wash - unfortunately she did not realize anything menthe BURNS genitals. apparently.
- SpectralSounds, on 10/11/2007, -10/+16That bottle wouldnt happen to be a coke bottle would it? You know those crazy Gods...
- dracostimpy, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6I think your sarcasm detector needs a tune-up.
- edstate, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6What the ***** are 4-7 year old boys doing using skin care products?
- Tsen, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7...Or because they can market medicine for athlete's foot, headaches and ear mites separately and triple their cash. Big pharma isn't exactly famous for being saintly...
Just saying. - DarthDemo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I use Tea Tree oil like I would Neosporin, Bactine, and Mercurchrome. It is great stuff that's always worked well on cuts, burns, and abrasions. Fizz the wound clean with Hydrogen Peroxide and keep it clean with Tea Tree oil. It smells real nice too.
- Farticus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Great, I have been looking for a cheap, natural and effective way to treat cat infestations.
- OpenFuture, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Wow I would never use this for an ear infection, considering that the infection is being caused by bacteria I doubt this oil would do anything but make it worse. Not treating a bacterial infection properly can be dangerous and in this case could potentially cost someone their hearing.
- Farticus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3The original article has a lot of inaccuracies, however Tea Tree Oil is worth knowing about, for better info look here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melaleuca
http://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=Melaleuca%20alternifolia - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@Farticus: you do realize that the outer ear canal is not connected to the middle ear at all do you? There is something called the ear drum in the way.
PS: ear buds are bad for you ears. They just push the wax deeper and compact it against the ear into a hard wall of wax. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3You cannot obtain a patent for Tea Tree oil. Tea Tree oil is a pre 1920's medicine and is patent exempt. There are a number of companies in Australia who manufacture Tea Tree oil and sell it at a reasonable price. Keep away from multilevel marketing companies (MLM) who sell the stuff, you are getting ripped off. Google for a reputable Australian manufacturer. The properties of the product are well documented. Tea Tree oil has its place as an antiseptic and washing conditioner. It is not a magic elixir as promoted by the MLMers who have a vested interest. In Australia it is a common product; you can purchase it over the counter even in some supermarkets. The tree grows like a weed in an arid semi-desert environment. Never drink the stuff, it toxic and will kill you.
- ren1999, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4I use less than a drop of Melaluca on my finger with water and rub it on my face once a day. It keeps my skin blemish free. It works for me and that is the only study I need.
- Angostura, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4One thing it is good for - a few drops in a nappy (that's diaper for non English speakers) bucket keeps the contents from getting too smelly before you can get them in the washing machine.
- Tsen, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4Who gives a damn? It was a funny reference.
- phineous, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2If you have a stubborn skin fungus, tea tree oil will kill it when nothing else seems to work. Plus it's cheap. It also kills infections in fish.
- Jenga, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Indeed. Some more mention of gynecomastia associated with tea tree oil on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tea_tree_oil
I'd stay away from the stuff if you're young and male. - wannabenomad, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Overuse of any antiseptic or antibiotic product can strengthen pathogens. Think of over-zealous housewives using a can of lysol a day.
That doesn't mean that these products shouldn't be used when necessary. - wisie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Tea tree oil is great for bad areas of acne.
- Bull7, on 10/11/2007, -3/+5Take it for what it is, Its natural and does have a lot of benefits. You need to check them out and give them a chance first.Guess you mind controlled babies need to see it on a commercial before you think it has any benefits.
- toyotaboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I tried to stay a member of Melaleuca, but I just couldn't keep up with the 35 minimum points every month (nor could I afford $60/month).
- StacieN, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I use tea tree oil sometimes. However, I watched my mom overuse it (on any blemish that appeared on her face) and it irritated her skin so much she looked like an ogre. Moderation is key.
- DerekV, on 10/11/2007, -8/+10Is this news?
- angryredplanet, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I understand what you're saying, but it's definately not "snake oil *****". I use it as an antiseptic, for cold sores and as a flea irritant on my dog (don't think it's strong enough to kill fleas but they hate it and leave).
It definately works "as advertised". - saggygrandma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Its wideley used across Australia, I presumed it was known about elsewhere, oh well your loss....
- jeffreyphe, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1Well, I absolutely love the products from Melaleuca! The oil itself has gotten rid of the ring worm my dog gave me, including his ring worm. The Renew lotion has cured my sister's Eczema, her kids Eczema, and my brother's Eczema. This after years of doctor recommended lotions, most containing harmful steriods. My father likes the effects of the patented vitamins better that Shaklee brand, which is saying alot! Like many of the other comments on this thread, from people who have actually tried the products, they too are sold on their effectiveness!
The whole point of using Melaleuca's toxic-free everyday products is that they are toxic free, and environmentally friendly! Besides, no other company is going to offer lucrative profit sharing just by mentioning the company to others. You definately won't find Wal-Mart giving you a check for bringing others to the store with you, that's for sure!
My wife and I decided to look past the price and treat it like a business. Now, only 2 months into it, we are making enough residual income every month that all our products are free, forever, with extra to spare! It won't be long and we will be making enough life-long monthly residual income that I can quit my job and do it full time, and I will really be making alot of money!
If anyone else is interested in ditching the toxic store-bought everyday products, just visit my website and learn more about this excellent opportunity: http://www.residualwellness.biz Happy Shopping! - Terr01, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2"It's an Ad!" "Our buries can't oppose diggpower of this magnitude!"
- Richdiet, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Lots of people use lots of products that they pay a lot of money for which do nothing whatsoever. Repeatble, double-blind, peer-reviewed studies or it doesn't work.
- dacheetah, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Wait, I already know where I can get Tea Tree Oil, but where can I get this Snake-Oil stuff?
- diabolicdiablo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I used a shampoo with it for a while, made my scalp fell all tingly.
- JigoroKano, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Tea tree oil contains phyto-estrogen and can make little boys grow small breasts.
It's harmless to adults though.
Other plants containing phyto-estrogen: lavender, flax seed oil, soy. - jeffreyphe, on 03/27/2008, -0/+1If you do want to give it a try I actually have a home based business helping people attain total wellness with products like this, and many of the products do contain tea tree oil, and it really does work well! visit http://www.residualwellness.biz for more info.
- MindTrigger, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2It's cool if you are into natural medicine, basic living, or survival skills. dickweed.
- jpop, on 10/11/2007, -8/+9It's another one of those things they can't patent to make a buck. Incidentally, if you search around, you will see it in various products out there (especially the "natural" care products).
- jasoninoakland, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2And why do you want it to penetrate 7 layers of skin??
- theratdotus, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I love the stuff, the toothpicks are great for cold sores . someone link to the article where it says using this stuff can give you man boobs though. something about it blcoking testosterone.
- isntreal, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1haha
- DerekV, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Dickweed... is that some kind of natural medicine? Do you swallow it or just stick it in your mouth for a while?
- SIDSI, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Tea tree oil is really good I have used it for years. But I must say do not use it on your pets. Its very toxic for cats to injest tea tree oil, dont put it on their fur.
- saggygrandma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Snake oils sit? wtf man its a useful house hold product, you obviously know ***** all about it.
- warragul, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ti-tree oil has the same problems as eucalyptus oil; we simply don't have a clear idea what is in it. I haven't used it as much as I've used eucalyptus oil but even that can catch you out. Certain plastics (eg some computer cases) are soluble in eucalyptus oil and both oils are very aggressive on human tissues.
Both are very good antiseptics, though. - drmobutu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Tea tree oil is a good anti-fungal, as good as, or better than many otc anti-fungals. Most of the ailments listed in TFA are fungal infections.
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+4A proven disinfectant? Is it bacteriostatic or bacteriocidal? What is its pharmacodynamic properties? You are claiming that it is virucidal and fungicidal as well?
I'm a doctor so please tell me your citations from your textbook and the research that The Body Shop has done on the subject. - Hush, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1you say it burns like thats a bad thing. Any feeling at all down there is a good feeling.
