- 4verageJo3, on 05/19/2009, -0/+20I'm on the donor list ... how about you?
- Doubledown, on 05/19/2009, -0/+19I just noticed a typo in my post.... It should read that radiation treatment did NOT put the leukemia into remission. Hence why there is the urgent rush to find him a bone marrow match.
I apologize but i wanted to get the message out quickly - Doubledown, on 05/19/2009, -0/+12from the facebook group:
"thinking that maybe people will feel more inclined to help and feel closer to nick if they knew just a little bit about him. about spending his 28th bday in quarantine...how he is an only child,etc..." - deidrehopp, on 05/20/2009, -0/+7Hey there-
You should check with the University of AK. they used to have a bone marrow transplant program (my father was in it) also, check with the http://www.multiplemyeloma.org/ they may be able to refer you to donor banks!
I'm not Asian, so I don't think I'd be a match. Good luck!
Best,
Deidre - EMFK, on 05/20/2009, -0/+7My kids and quite a few cousins could be possible donors/match, but I believe they're too young as all of them are under the age of 18. If someone has more information, let me know.
- Kormiku, on 05/20/2009, -0/+6Im half caucasian, half asian. Is there any way I can help?
edit: just read the article. I am currently living in asia, and doubt that i can be of help right now for this particular person. Sorry. - EMFK, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4Thank you for wanting to help. Check out the Facebook link at the top for more information!
- Doubledown, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4Updated Note I received:
A side hopeful tidbit I learned is that a match could potentially be found from someone of a different race. Carole Gillespie said it is rare but she spoke of two cases she's seen where someone of a completely opposite race was a perfect 10 for 10 match. It's a shot in the dark, but you never know! - highlymodified, on 05/20/2009, -0/+4+1.
3 swabs and 5 minutes of paperwork can = 1 life.
No excuses, people. - Doubledown, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3You can expedite testing through Marrow.org
Definitely go to the facebook page for more info - Kormiku, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3Ok well ive been thinking about it and living in asia isnt a big problem if hes going to die. How can i get a test to see if i match this guy? If its a match, im sure arrangements can be made.
- EatingPie, on 05/20/2009, -1/+4ANYONE CAN MATCH. That's not well-communicated, but it's true.
They're focusing on the odds, though. The best bet is a family member. After that it's ethnicity. From there, the odds drop significantly. But you could still match even if you're white. But if you *are* Asian, given the odds, it's a very good idea to register!
If you are joining the National Bone Registry Program (or whatever it's called these days), you may not match this person, but possibly someone else down the line. So it's not just this one man's life... it's many others! A good program.
-Pie - Doubledown, on 05/20/2009, -0/+3also, to help expedite the testing, you should contact:
Carol Gillespie (carol@aadp.org) at the Asian American Donor Program - yocouchdigga, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2People helping people, good stuff.
Will share and shout. - Doubledown, on 05/20/2009, -0/+2I think your statement is accurate, but shoot a note to Carol Gillespie to be certain. Her info is:
