- annhltr, on 01/07/2009, -2/+37Why aren't they trying to find that person?
Oh wait.. - Skurt, on 01/07/2009, -0/+20Every 3 Minutes? Tell that guy to get out of the Doctor's office and let someone else get tested...
:| - perryc, on 01/07/2009, -2/+15I hope that there is one person BORN at at least every 3 minutes, otherwise is trouble.

Sure, I made you scroll. But it's the only way to make you realise that the daily mail is the FOX new of the UK. - alexkball, on 01/07/2009, -2/+12Holy ***** that's a lot of second opinions.
- falafelkiosken, on 01/07/2009, -0/+8that person can't be happy
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -2/+10Very sad statistic. I'd love to know how this compares to other countries in EU.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -3/+10These statistics are arbitrary. Who knows what else happens every 3 minutes. Probably quite a few nice things too. Tell me what percentage of the British populace has diabetes and we can discuss it, but idiotic alarmist statistics like this are utterly worthless.
- robert001, on 01/07/2009, -1/+8Just so you Americans can sleep easy, you have 6 cases diagnosed per minute.
With 5 times as many people, you have more than 3 times as many recorded instances. And thats just for over 20 year olds!
Source: http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/statistics/# ... - 9bpm9, on 01/07/2009, -0/+7I don't know about Britain, but I know for damn sure what the problem is in America. Healthy foods are expensive because the government doesn't put large amounts of subsidies into fruits and vegetables, only meat. And that meat is just bought byy all of the fast food companies, and since it's cheap, we go there and buy that instead.
If governments want to make their people healthier, they need to at least give us a chance to be able to afford healthy food without going broke because of it. - hauntedchippy, on 01/07/2009, -2/+8YAWN. Daily Fail alarmist pap.
- mickstephenson, on 01/07/2009, -0/+6Riiight, well I don't know about the article, but if you were to be considered representative of the US, I'd have to go with... incomprehensible morons.
- garryw, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5Well it's colder than Antartica so people just sit around the house.
- bman2380, on 01/07/2009, -1/+6probably has to do with the deep fried mars bar
- diggopolous, on 01/07/2009, -0/+5Hmmmm Can;t think of one time after a pub crawl, my mates said: " I wish I could get my hands on some inexpensive broccoli and pears. Damn government subsidies! I'll just have to have 3 big Macs and a supersized coke!"
- Amazetbm, on 01/07/2009, -2/+6How do you figure? The author of the original book was of a Norwegian-British background. The 1971 movie was filmed in Germany while the 2005 movie was filmed in the U.K. The architecture used in both movies is clearly European.
- Delphium226, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4@chillymanilli
You're right, the internets should take everything YOU do into account. ***** everyone else. - STKD, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Lifestyle = type II.
Type 1 is genetic and bugger all to do with lifestyle changing will change that. - Hefelumpman, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4So your burying this as a online-vs-irl dupe?
o_O - Delphium226, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Phew, national pride restored then.
- Steeeeve1, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4But now I don't feel like scrolling up to digg that comment.
- ahawks, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Type 1 or Type2?
THEY ARE NOT THE SAME. Please stop referring to type 2 diabetes as just Diabetes. - inactive, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4They've found him. The real problem is his doctor's short-term memory.
- Angostura, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4Please don't.
- Ninnux, on 01/07/2009, -2/+6With their diet, it's no wonder.
America: Please don't feel too bad about our weight problems. Europe is getting just as bad. In my experience, Ireland sported some especially prodigious fatties. - Delphium226, on 01/07/2009, -0/+4dugg for 'prodigious fatties'
- Nauree, on 01/07/2009, -2/+5I'm fairly sure it isn't set in America.
- dhughes, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3 Who is forcing people to eat that junk, don't they have any free will?
- mksmothers, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3You'd think that after diagnosing him once they wouldn't have to do it again.
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4You're missing my point. I'm aware of the statistics, but the title itself is alarmist. I'd rather it say something about there being 2.5 million diabetics in Britain.
- ClevelandBrown, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3You want to have sexual relations with The Daily Mail?
- mickstephenson, on 01/07/2009, -2/+5It's actually fairly ambiguous where it is set, I believe. I haven't read the book since I was in single digits though so can't remember if it is clearer there. Either way calling him a jerk is pretty uncalled for.
- decoy26517, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3FTA:
"The vast majority were middle-aged people with type two diabetes, which is linked to being overweight through poor diet and lack of exercise and brings an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, blindness and amputation."
So yeah, the brits are following the yanks in lifestyle choices and are paying the price for it. - kmattso, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Does Wilford Brimley know about this?
- drunkenoaf, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3So they meant Type 2, not Type 1 or Type 1.5 (a new one on me)
- eddie72, on 01/07/2009, -0/+3Good Point
- Angostura, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4I'm a Brit and having read it again recently with my daughter, I'd say it was set in the U.S - rather surprisingly. The money he finds in the street is a dollar bill, the sweets are all referred to as "candy".
- waydee, on 01/07/2009, -1/+4You've had too much daily mail lad.
- SirFink, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Meat causes diabetes?
- SirFink, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Mmm... arm fat.
- diabetic, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2That is very interesting information; diabetes has become an epidemic like disease all across the world - particularly in developed countries. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia recently reported that an estimated 24 million people in the United States have diabetes. Diabetes prevention education is a must in developed western countries!
- clickwir, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2Damnit I hate these "Every X time something happens."
No, it's not true. It's just a calculation. Taking the total number and dividing by time does not mean that this happens every 3 mins. - marioara, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2this is what modern lifestyle does
- inactive, on 01/07/2009, -1/+3"A Person in Britain is Diagnosed with Diabetes every 3 mins."
Who is this man and why are they testing him so often? - jriggs420, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2relevent:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pod4jIKT_kA - nowhereelse, on 01/08/2009, -0/+2The highest profit food group for manufacturers is the refined carboyhdrates. Coupled with the carbohydrate addiction that usually precedes type II diabetes there really is little hope of reversing this trend without substantial government intervention into the food industry and that's not going to happen before there's a crisis.
- BradOFarrell, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2It was published in America. And also, the sequel involves them going to an American space station and is all about the president of the united states and martians and stuff.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 01/07/2009, -0/+2Whooooosh!!!
