- AHammer16, on 01/04/2009, -38/+404What about soot spewing buses and 18 wheelers? Yes we know already cigs are bad news, now we are being told just being around the smoke and then going around someone else is exposing them to toxic *****? Give it a rest and worry about something more important.
- icurnvs, on 01/05/2009, -13/+291Am I the only one who thought this was going to be an Onion article?
- inactive, on 01/04/2009, -22/+280can't wait for 4th hand smoke. LOL
- binky79, on 01/05/2009, -20/+243Why are we (as a society) turning into such pussies?
- compressedaudio, on 01/04/2009, -17/+159Walking next to a busy road is worse.
- NinjaDaZz, on 01/04/2009, -20/+160Oh wow.... I swear some people are just looking for something to be scared about. What are they going to do when the world is completely generic and hazard free ?
- rjhomuth, on 01/05/2009, -7/+146Fourth-hand smoke: Just THINKING about someone smoking.
- notzak, on 01/05/2009, -4/+1062nd generation hand smoke. "Your coworker's grandparents used to smoke!"
- sjbdallas, on 01/04/2009, -7/+105What about all the second-hand jizz in those rooms? That must be some kind of hazard too.
- everlast88, on 01/05/2009, -21/+115I'll say it before Penn and Teller can, 3rd hand smoke is *****
- vinceislegend, on 01/05/2009, -2/+92It's cool though. Digg finds a new cure for cancer at least once a week.
- Avaseal, on 01/04/2009, -7/+96So when my coworkers walk into the board room for our weekly meeting and smell like cigarettes I now have an excuse to skip it? Ya that'll go over well come review time.
- paradigmx, on 01/05/2009, -41/+125For ***** sakes, What the ***** is this ***** war on smokers, ***** all you elitist snobs that are holier than thou because you don't smoke, go ***** yourself and realize that smokers are by far one of the least dangerous thing you come across in your daily life.
Stop trying to control the people around you that choose to live how they want, if its that important to you, stop driving, taking the bus, running your fridge, heating/cooling your house, turning on the lights, or breathing, all of those cause poisons to enter the atmosphere. Stop targeting us because we're the "easy" target. - mikemarino, on 01/05/2009, -11/+81This is taking being a pussy to a new level.
- Kinsbane, on 01/05/2009, -8/+72You know what smell my brain tells me to get away from even faster than someone who's just smoked? Someone who just took a *****. I find that 11ty times more toxic.
- Klisk, on 01/05/2009, -14/+77I don't smoke, never have, don't ever plan to.
However I agree with paradigmx.
The war against smokers is ridiculous. The whole hype of lung cancer... Ridiculous. Go live life and stop trying to make others as sheltered and scared as you. Second hand smoke isn't going to kill you, sorry -- Nope, it isn't. I say that as a NON-SMOKER. Unless you live with someone who smokes, I don't think you're ever going to be even faintly effected by being around a few smokers.
You people are the reason that bars, diners, pool halls, restaurants... The social experience is entirely dead and vacant. People don't go out like they used to because they can't smoke, or hell, so much as hold a conversation without someone crying about being offended.
You're all a bunch of babies, I swear. If you don't want to smoke, and you are concerned about your health, that's cool. I feel the same way. But the difference is that I KEEP IT TO MYSELF. Stop torturing other people. I want to smack people who bitch at my friends should they be, god forbid, smokers.
I never understood the American desire to show superiority over other people. It's almost as if everyone has to disprove their own insecurities by being a dick. - BotchaMcCoola, on 01/05/2009, -3/+65Work on it. There is more money in this still.
- adavis99, on 01/05/2009, -3/+62This breathing thing sounds dangerous. I'm gonna cut way back this year.
- jsdratm, on 01/05/2009, -0/+57See the article about women's hormones getting into the water supply
- orangesims, on 01/05/2009, -4/+61thats when, you hang out with a non-smoker, who was just outside talking to a smoker, and they've come back in with their 2nd-hand smoke and breathing it all over you..............
yeah i'm lost too.. i cant believe some people take this ***** so seriously. - hanger69er, on 01/05/2009, -4/+56''the researchers asked people if they agreed with the statement that breathing air in a room today where people smoked yesterday can harm the health of infants and children. Only 65 percent of nonsmokers and 43 percent of smokers agreed with that statement, which researchers interpreted as acknowledgement of the risks of third-hand smoke.'
So basically, there is not one single thread of REAL, TRUE and/or PROVEN evidence that this "study" formed its' theory on. Only opinions from a random survey. RIDICULOUS!!!!! - JFitzpatrick, on 01/05/2009, -11/+63Oh give me a ***** break.
Just because something smells unpleasant doesn't make it toxic... and just because something is toxic when you suck it right off a burning ***** stick right into your lungs doesn't mean a tiny molecular whiff of it will kill you. The ***** bum next to you on the subway that reeks of Boones Farm and cheap cigarettes isn't going to give you cancer.
Jesus people... you'd think the whole god damn country was full of hypochondriacs. - inactive, on 01/05/2009, -32/+82What a bunch of *****, non smokers might be the biggest bunch of ***** alive on this planet.
- Zervaman, on 01/05/2009, -6/+51Someone PLEASE tell me why cigarettes are legal and marijuana is not again...
- mwace, on 01/05/2009, -4/+48Hey, you, smoker person who smells vaguely like tobacco! You're ruining my dream of living forever!
- kevlar21, on 01/05/2009, -7/+513rd hand smoke... sounds misleading. It's still second hand, but no longer smoke.
- voidentry, on 01/05/2009, -2/+46because marijuana makes you kill people and rape children...
- neXion, on 01/05/2009, -10/+48Breaking news... 17th hand smoke will KILL YOU!
- xptoast, on 01/05/2009, -4/+42I think people do complain about that. It is called smog I think.
- mwace, on 01/05/2009, -4/+38You're brain isn't telling you to "get away", you're just experiencing the nervous reaction associated with enzeme sensors reacting with the cigarette smoke (who's active ingredients are almost certainly _not_ the bulk of what of tobacco smoke is composed of).
People are letting their feelings of "TOBACCO = BAD THING" lead them to conclusions that aren't true or being backed up by empirical evidence. In terms of cancer risk, how much does smelling a tobacco scent compare to gamma rays you're exposed to as an airliner gets struck by lightening? (Hint: this happens fairly frequently) - paradigmx, on 01/05/2009, -12/+461) ***** you!
2) So your so ***** important that you think people should stop smoking because you don't like an odor, how about we ban farting, or going a day without bathing, or wearing a shirt twice. How about we just ban sweating, your precious nose cant handle it.
How about this, you wear cologne or perfume? Stop, i don't like the smell and the chemicals in them are harmful. You enjoy eating sushi? stop, the smell of fish makes me gag.
you need to grow up and stop acting like a child. The world isn't going to end because you dont get your way.
spare me the health argument, because its sounds like you only care about what it smells like. - NathanielJ, on 01/05/2009, -6/+38This is one horribly misleading article. The first two or three paragraphs make it sound as if there is a new study showing the risks of third-hand smoke, but at the end of the article they explain that the study simply shows that most people don't consider third-hand smoke a real threat.
Write an article when you have something to back it up, and screw off with your ever-more-ridiculous scare tactics. - spoonchucks, on 01/05/2009, -0/+27No, really... Tell us how you feel.
- Klisk, on 01/05/2009, -9/+36Rikkochet, prime example of media hysteria and lies. I'm a non-smoker and I can't smell it. I also realize that walking past a few smokers in public isn't going to kill me.
The thing here isn't that the "majority takes over". It's that the majority is spewing out statistics and hype that they heard on a commercial. Think for yourself. Please. You're the same people who whine about hand-made cigars having "% number more amount of tobacco than nicotine", without taking into consideration that they also lack the chemicals and fillers that are the TRUE addictive qualities of cigarrettes.
I'll admit, I've never smoked a cigar, but I really do miss the smell when I go out to eat, or drink. I loved it. It really made the vibe. - BabyWookie, on 01/05/2009, -5/+32LOL. This is not an Onion article?!? Ridiculous.
- paradigmx, on 01/05/2009, -10/+36Frankly, I know smoking is going to kill me, but, you'll have to pry my smoke out of my cold dead hands.
I don't care what laws are enacted, Cigarette prohibition will just cause a massive rise in crime as people illegally grow tobacco and sell it. You cant stop it, but if you ban it, you will only draw curiosity from a younger generation who will only do it in order to piss their parents off.
Prohibition of anything only leads to crime, and more crime. You really think drug dealers want pot legalized? They would be bankrupt inside of a week and might have to get a real job. - blur13, on 01/05/2009, -2/+27It's what happens to hypochondriacs
- mithrasinvictus, on 01/05/2009, -9/+33Come back once they start treating drivers like they do smokers.
- stephant, on 01/05/2009, -5/+28You are the least fun human being on planet earth. Seriously. Not one person is less fun than you. I can't imagine anyone can stand being in the same room as you.
- roflbrothel, on 01/05/2009, -4/+25We'll watch the average IQ of our population plummet. I advocate that we go the other direction! Get rid of stop lights, encourage companies to advertise bleach as a refreshing beverage, put crack rock vending machines on every street corner and bring back dueling! We're well on our way to neutering natural selection. I believe under my plan the intelligence of our species as a whole will go up. Vote roflbrothel in 2012!
- kyzel, on 01/05/2009, -1/+22Seventh-hand smoke: Being on the same planet as someone who smoked at some point
- inactive, on 01/05/2009, -10/+31errgh the non-smoking groups are at it again you already took smoking out of pubs and restaurants what more do they want? just let us smoke in peace!
- vawksel, on 01/05/2009, -16/+35So don't do either.
I hate it when people make an argument to ignore one problem by naming yet another unrelated problem we should also be dealing with.
There are enough people on the planet to be working on more than one problem at a time.
Don't worry about 3rd hand smoke or exhaust fumes from buses on busy roads because the radiation from the sun is giving us all skin cancer! - overridemymind, on 01/05/2009, -1/+20Here's my take on things --
I'm a smoker.... a heavy one (around a pack a day). Yes, I can smell it on myself, and... yeah, I agree, the smell can be pretty awful at times. I try to be a courteous smoker though. I understand that there are / can be health risks involved with second hand smoke -- (yeah, yeah, firsthand's gonna kill me, blah blah blah. DON'T try to shove that fact down my throat -- I know very well what the health risks are. It's personal. I'm aware of it. We'll leave it at that.) the studies done, conclusive or not, are enough reason for me to avoid smoking around those with children or in a crowded restaraunt.
However, I enjoy my cigarettes. But I'll be courteous to those that do not. One stipulation on this, though -- I treat you as human and try to be respectful of your wishes -- at least be respectful to me as a person.
I.E. If I'm smoking in a restaraunt and you are a non-smoker sitting nearby, and you cannot stand the smell, the smoke itself, or have health problems associated with these second-hands, suck it up for five to ten seconds, come over to my table and politely ask me to either A) put out my cigarette) or B) choose another table. If you're polite about it -- I'll 9.95 times out of 10 comply with your request, and I'll typically even apologize (that part's just me, though)
However, come to my table waving these studies in my face or yelling, screaming, or otherwise ranting -- and I'm likely to put my cigarette out in your damned eye.
And I'd bet my bottom dollar that about 90% of smokers are the same way or fairly similar.
It's people that blow these things way out of proportion instead of handling it like adults that encourage me more and more to quit being courteous and become a "militant smoker" and I'm fairly certain that I'm not the only one.
So remember, folks -- you may not agree with my choice to smoke. You may even think I'm the scum of the earth for smoking (although that's a bit extreme, IMO) -- But let's remember the golden rule: Treat others as you wish to be treated -- you may find that you get what you want from others more easily that way. - Aynatix, on 01/05/2009, -23/+42I will enjoy my cancer and increased heart disease.
..the mean time.. people should ***** off.
My daughter was just born friday and I was outside smoking.. I turned around to look out the door and I seen a sticker "Smoke-Free Hospital" then right next to it said somthing like "...chemicals known to the state of california to cause cancer.." basiclly warning you of risk of cancer for being at the hospital.
.... ??? Yea..
Seriously just stop! Your not gonna die because you walked by me smoking. - mithrasinvictus, on 01/05/2009, -9/+28The problem is that it is a bit hypocritical. Everybody seems to be entitled to their own car and it should be as big as they want them, but somehow smokers are second class citizens.
Either become a nanny state or leave people in peace. - Otto, on 01/05/2009, -7/+25The occasional smoke prevents me from murdering people like you with my bare hands.
So, you might want to consider that in your "risk/reward" analysis as well. - UselessTrivia, on 01/05/2009, -1/+19Posting a link to a youtube video about "the evils of subject X" is not a good way to underscore your point. It just makes you look like a crackpot.
- angryfirelord, on 01/05/2009, -7/+25The Onion, New York Times, same difference.
- stephant, on 01/05/2009, -1/+19Boy, you're horrible at this game. At that point a study finds that a hazard free world is actually worse for you than any of the hazards ever were.
