- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -13/+46Inaccurate Title. Should have called it "A 12-Step Program to Eating Healthier Than Ever Before AS A VEGAN" or Squirrel
- vsujohn2, on 02/22/2008, -8/+37That article kind of pissed me off, and here's why
1. It assumes that cutting out meat is the only way to go
2. Theres a lot of foods people can't stand, like tofu or veggie anything (burgers)
I really doubt this guy/person was a junk food addict before and now eats tofu burgers like they're goin out of style. I can eat healthy but Im not going to deprive myself of a little TASTE now and then - WoollyMittens, on 02/22/2008, -8/+29Why do "vegans" always have to sound so damn condescending about it. The canines in your mouth didn't grow there to assault a tomato.
- brentinkc, on 02/22/2008, -2/+22***** apples, they're yesterday's news. Bananas are where it's at.
- EllieElliott, on 02/22/2008, -6/+22but where's the bacon?
- hootpie, on 02/22/2008, -7/+21Some of it is common sense and good advice, but some of it is just stupid.
1. Eat fruits for snacks. --- Wrong. Don't snack at all. You can easily gain weight by eating too many fruits as they are high in calories/sugar/carbohydrates.
5. Cut out red meat. --- A steak or hamburger here or there will not do enough harm to warrant cutting red meat out completely.
8. Soy milk instead of whole milk. ---- very, VERY WRONG. Soy milk and soy in general is absolutely awful for you. It's a leftover byproduct of animal feed on farms, so they brilliantly marketed it as a healthy choice. Soy artificially raises estrogen levels and can cause all sorts of havoc.
11. Scrambled tofu instead of fried eggs. ---- Tofu falls into the same category as soy. In limited quantities it's not a big deal, but make it a big part of your diet and it'll cause problems. Eat egg whites instead.
12. Try some great veggie dinners. ---- What the f*c#? Meat is good for you. Protein is good for you. - VeganG, on 02/22/2008, -1/+12You can't lump all veggie burgers together. There are a lot of kinds commercially, and a lot of made-from-scratch ones; they are all different. There are A LOT of bad ones.
It's like saying all beer is watered-down awfulness. - julianwan, on 02/22/2008, -3/+12since bush has become president, our country's obesity rates have doubled, can't we just, blame him or something?
- Zindrix, on 02/22/2008, -1/+9Honestly, you don't have to give up meat to have a healthy diet. I'm getting tired of these pompous vegetarians parading around thinking they are so healthy when they seem malnourished.
If I gave up meat I would be stuck eating a lot of soy, nut, and bean products to compensate for the lack of protein and energy in my diet. It's pretty easy to just lay off junk food, eat leaner meat (and maybe in less quantities), as well as add in more fruits and vegetables into a diet. - FTLJohnson, on 02/22/2008, -3/+11Dugg especially for comments about Soy. Soy is seriously vile. My mother suffered through breast cancer and now has to completely avoid soy for fear that it's estrogen mimicking abilities could contributing rekindling the cancer. No soy at all. Now, that's what it can do to a woman... I don't even WANT to know what pseudoestrogen can do to a man. No 'moobs' for me thanks.
As far as meat and protein... Americans especially eat WAY too much meat. I don't disagree that most people could stand to cut most meat out of their diets... I didn't learn this fact until after trying out the Atkins diet for a while, and then getting to learn about the joyful agony of having gout. - scallon, on 02/22/2008, -0/+7Snacking is actually good for you if you do it intelligently. Ideally you should be eating six meals a day, not the usual three (breakfast, lunch dinner) we are accustomed to. Three medium type meals and three small snacks. That way you are never hungry and thus never overeat. The idea is to keep your body from storing fat. I see what you mean about snacking, and for most people you would be correct, but it is not a set rule or anything.
- syracuselax71, on 02/22/2008, -2/+8this is really the only thing anyone needs to do to lose weight, eat healthier and not as much, think about how every other animal/organism eats in the world, whole grain non processed food, besides our pets, and then how the majority of americans eat, all processed food in some cases, packaged, chemically altered. Whole is the way to go.
- Autofac, on 02/22/2008, -2/+8Seems pretty ideal.
I eat perfectly well and include red-meat, white meat, fish, vegetables, grains.
It's not about cutting red meat, it's about reducing the amount of red meat you take.
6oz steak-good, 14oz steak-bad. - aflusche, on 02/22/2008, -6/+11But I like tasty animals.
- dstz, on 02/22/2008, -0/+5I'm not vegan, I love raw meat actually. That said this article doesn't seem "vegan" to me. But that's maybe because I'm European and not used to eat meat everyday, but rather in equal part with fish, eggs, poultry, and some other meals that don't involve meat (which would make between 2 and 4 meals with red meat a week, on average). Also here sandwiches still have the upper hand over fast foods, so that may again make a difference in perception of "how vegan" alimentary advices are. To finish, there's not an advice here that seem other that common sense. Water instead of soda, whole grains, eating veggies, making own pizzas, are pretty common.
- VeganG, on 02/22/2008, -1/+6Better get your fill now while you can. Bananas are going the way of the dodo, I heard.
- VeganG, on 02/22/2008, -3/+8Every group that thinks others should be doing as they do has their vocal nuts. As for the teeth argument, we've also evolved the mental faculty and calmer society to set aside that ancient necessity. We're not scrounging for every little thing we can get anymore, and the nutritional knowledge we have now tells us that we can get by without it. My point is, the choice is now present to listen to our own person reasoning rather than an evolutionary carry-over. There are lots of parts that our bodies no longer need but still have.
- mrdoogee, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4Damn hippies! Lets eat THEM!
- tHePeOPle, on 02/22/2008, -1/+5I like the cut of this man's jib.
- MrFancy, on 02/22/2008, -1/+5Yup, Fake-n-Bacon. Also Tofurky.
- xenixninja, on 02/22/2008, -0/+4And you managed to be a douchebag with one sentence. Well done sir.
- mediumofmeaning, on 09/08/2009, -1/+5it's pretty funny how many people are personally insulted merely by the presence of a vegan-friendly diet plan on the internet. this guy's not even advocating strict veganism or making categorical statements about it; for the most part he's simply talking common sense (water better than soda, nuts better than chips, whole grain, etc).
get over it. - MaxIsBored, on 02/22/2008, -1/+5As a Vegan, i find this really stupid. It's badly written, and horribly inaccurate.
It is true that vegetables are very healthy,, but meat is also. Cutting meat out of your diet isn't necessarily going to make you any healthier. Moderation is the key, not cutting out nutrients.
A lot of people seem to go vegan because they think they'll loose weight, and this is horribly untrue. - mrdoogee, on 02/22/2008, -1/+5Since I don't have a medical degree, take my thoughts with a grain of salt. I have found that the best diet of all is one of plain old omnivorism. However there is a twist: Eat only things that are as unaltered from thier natural source as possible. Meat without hormones, Sugars from real fruits and grains, A nutritionist I went to once told me some advice I try to follow every day: " Look at the ingredients on your food. If you don't recognize 2 or more ingredients, don't consume it." You would be amazed how much we put into our bodies that we have no idea what it does.
- VeganG, on 02/22/2008, -2/+6"This guy advocates a lifestyle, not successful tips to improve your health. "
Isn't that the same thing?
Also, if you're unwilling to spend more money or time on your health, that's your own problem. We SHOULD be spending more money on food these days. Just a few decade ago, we spent a much larger percentage of our incomes on food. Now it's shrunk considerably, but that large percentage of our income has been replaced with the amount we spend on health care. - yoshman, on 02/22/2008, -1/+5I agree. While eating fast food too much is bad, he doesn't mention of what I think is the biggest problem with weight gain these days: portion size. You goto a restaurant and get a meal for three. Eat less more often and it will help you lose weight.
- ranx, on 02/22/2008, -2/+5Another thing.. check into "superfoods". I'm 42 and still feel 20ish. I eat untoasted wheat germ,
(the toasted variety unfortunately toasts the important nutrients) . Most people find sardines repulsive, but they are rich with long chain Omega 3 fatty oils. I at least clean out the innards before eating... try them with Triscuit grain crackers. Don't cheat yourself on vegetables and fruit, although that's easy to do in today's world. If you're VERY busy and "just don't have time" for a healthy meal, pick up some stuff that's very convenient / doesn't go bad easily that you can take on the go. Bananas, Kiwi (take a small sharp knife to peel it), yogurt, mixed nuts, WATER instead of soda (at least with meals), as per the article. BTW, don't forget to EXERCISE at least occasionally.
Occasionally means at least 3 -4 times a month, or once / week. Exercise meaning ... bicycling (fun , low impact ), weight lifting ( doesn't need to be HEAVY, just do it... ), if you don't have weights, plain old push-ups, sit ups, lunging / stretching.. I know.. BORING. bowling ( you have to lug a heavy ball around, lunge, etc. plus you get to knock something down for your effort).
Tip : sitting behind the computer screen all day won't help. You need to get up and do this.
It doesn't have to take "all day", and you don't have to join a gym you'll never end up going to much. The big obstacle for most people is STARTING and adhering to the plan. Another problem is people stop exercising because their arms / legs, etc are sore. That means it's
working. After the sore spell, get back at it and you'll start to feel better and start to lose the real excessive weight. As in, burning the fat up and not just "water weight". - ranx, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3I hate replying to my own comment, but this is an exception... taking into account some people will think I ONLY eat what I mentioned is incorrect. I eat sweets (mostly dark chocolate), drink beer, occasional hard liquor, and red meat. The main point I'm trying to convey is to be your own "health monitor", because few people if any will remind you to do so. You're the Boss of yourself. I can only share what has worked for ME. (Disclaimer)...
- vader101, on 02/22/2008, -5/+8Annoying and Worthless. This guy advocates a lifestyle, not successful tips to improve your health.
Want the secret? MODERATION and EXERCISE.
By the way....
What is this guy's food budget? How much time does he spend in the market a week?
How much does time does he set aside daily to cook his "veggies" at home? Is he even employed?
- dtfinch, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3And stop eating so much cheese.
- xenixninja, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3No wonder there is wars. Someone is giving dietary advice and people fly of the handle. I'm losing hope in humanity day by day.
- WoollyMittens, on 02/22/2008, -1/+4Like legs?
- ddosterschill, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3"nuts. Mmmmm."
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3Yes, those stupid hippies with their damn fruits and vegetables.
- VeganG, on 02/22/2008, -1/+4Fake-N-Bacon is tasty, but it's really more like "smoked tempeh" than an actual bacon imposter. I've heard the Morningstar Farms bacon is much closer, but it has egg whites like every other Morningstar product.
- boubou64, on 02/22/2008, -0/+3I couldn't have said it better!!!! Last July I found out my cholesterol numbers were extremely high at 8.3. I changed my diet and exercised. This really changed the way I look at food. Foods are like medicine for your body. My body isn't a garbage can for fast food/restaurants ideas of the best and greasiest!!! I value my health and clean eating IS the answer to several modern day ailments.
For the record, I've lost 30 lbs and my cholesterol has come down to healthier levels. - VeganG, on 02/23/2008, -0/+2People feel threatened. I don't really know why.
- inactive, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Don't give up your steak then (or your cancer). No one's forcing you to do anything, Kansas girl.
- xenixninja, on 02/22/2008, -1/+3Substitute for what?
- PauliAnna, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2well said. harder to do ;)
- deMonkey, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2From reading the comments, I have to point out that way too many people in this world take dietary advice way too personal. He does not even say to go vegan, go vegetarian, or whatever many of you are claiming. He simply recommends you try some of these foods as alternatives and eliminate beef especially (which is recalled by the million tons yearly for a number of problems and has been connected to obesity and cancer in twelve hojillion studies) -- it's a safety precaution to make his article more sound. Change "remove" to "reduce" and you can enjoy your disgusting Grade-C beef Wendy's burgers without complaining, but you'll still run all the risks he's probably worried about, specifically if your metabolism cannot keep up with the fat or years down the road it causes cancer.
Now that the sugar coating's out of the way... I know a lot of ***** FAT PEOPLE in this country, and all of them consume the following, without exception:
-Soda
-Fast Food
-Processed foods
-Heavy portions of beef (1/2+ lb / day)
-Milk, or lots of cheese
Even if most of you disagree with some of his recommendations, I bet many would agree that America's obesity problems would be fixed overnight if everyone ate as this article recommended. If you don't want to give up milk, that's fine -- don't, this article was written for people that want a healthier diet and want change.
BTW, the only anti-cancer beef results I found from this search:
http://www.google.com/search?q=beef+cancer
...were from a bible site and Fox News. Not exactly the high list of trusted sources.
Try Beef and Hormones:
http://www.google.com/search?q=beef+hormones
I won't recommend Beef and Obesity, I think it's too obvious.
I'm a vegan, so feel free to press that red thumbs-down if you dislike me or my writing -- maybe one person will read this rambling and consider at least reducing the bad ***** in their diet. I can relate to all of this personally, as I was eating steaks and burgers, drinking milk, and all that until about 18 months ago. I've been on both sides of the war that's being waged in comments here. What convinced me to try giving up meat was talking with my uncle, who had been a very healthy vegan for 30 years, and seeing the awful condition of my senior citizen parents' health as a result of neglect, who ate like those fat people mentioned above.
I did tons of research on my own, and I recommend anyone does before they make a dietary change like the ones in this article. Writing off the advice here as nonsense because he says beef and milk are bad is just society's conditioning that eating the stuff is "normal" -- I'd like to know at what point in human history sucking down breastmilk from a cow became normal. The stuff is produced for *calves*, not adults, or even humans, and the kind most people drink has been changed so much over the years it barely resembles the natural stuff. Rat semen might taste wonderful too, but would you drink that *****? Seeing it from the outside, the whole thing reminds me of Slurm's secret ingredient in the Futurama episode (if you're a fan).
Anyway, have a good morning. I'm off to my yoga class then I need to go chain myself to a tree or whatever vegans do these days. :D - inactive, on 02/22/2008, -1/+3Why should you have to supplement to be healthy?
- xenixninja, on 02/22/2008, -2/+4Why not cut out meat? Lesser risk for colon cancer is great motivation in my opinion. Do some research before you bash something.
You should try the vegan burgers at Pogo Cafe in London. You'll love them. Trust me. - deMonkey, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Why does everyone take diet so personal?
The guy likes the taste of tofu and that makes him a ***** *****? It must be hard being so angry at people who think differently. - VeganG, on 02/22/2008, -1/+3I don't know, it's sad when you essentially can't say that fruits and vegetables are healthy in America without someone saying, "Shut the ***** up, fag, how dare you tell me I'm not eating perfectly." Why get so caught up about it? It's like it's a personal affront. At the end of the day, I couldn't care less who eats what, but for some reason as soon as you say anything about food, someone's up in your face.
- injury0314, on 02/22/2008, -1/+3Too much of anything is bad.
Eat a little bit of everything instead. - deMonkey, on 02/22/2008, -2/+4My uncle's been a vegan for 30 years and doesn't have Moobs.
Also, the "estrogen" in soy is not estrogen as you know it. It's phytoestrogen, meaning it derives from plants. It doesn't make men more like women. If you're worried about hormones in your food, I hope you're eating only organic beef and milk, which STILL have more estrogen than any soy product on the market. - adooga, on 02/22/2008, -1/+3There are a lot of different kinds of tofu and a lot of ways to cook it. Saying you don't like the texture of tofu is a bit like saying you don't like the colour of paint.
- VeganG, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2You know what, that works, too. No one said there's only one way. I would love to see more people simply cut back on the meat intake so that it's an accent to their meal and not the star of the show. There are many many cultures in which that's how it's done, and it's not always due to financial reasons.
- adooga, on 02/22/2008, -0/+2Hard to imagine why someone would dig you down for that insightful comment.
