AIDS isn't a virus
These were popular until AIDS awareness was big in the US:

and for a small price (braaaaaaains) he'll do private concerts. - atact88, on 10/07/2008, -1/+22For all of you who didn't read the article, a therapeutic vaccine doesn't prevent new infections. It helps mitigate the migration of HIV virus into T cells in already-infected people. An all-out virus vaccine is still being sought after, but it's been failure after failure so far. Only one vaccine candidate has gone on to Phase III trials and is scheduled to conclude next year I believe. And that's in Thailand. If it's successful, it will probably get FDA approval. The major players in vaccine research are pharmaceutical companies and the US military, so eat your heart out, America haters.
Some stats for interest:
2007:
$961 million spent on HIV research
~80% public funds
~84% of public funds were provided by the US government.
(Chemical and Engineering News, September 22, 2008)
Under President Bush's PEPFAR, 1.7 million people in subsaharan Africa are now receiving treatment for AIDS and candidate vaccines, as opposed to 50,000 in 2003 when Bush first signed PEPFAR into law. A huge, huge portion of these overseas public sector efforts are being undertaken by the U.S. Army. Up to $48 billion is authorized by PEPFAR for HIV vaccine research and treatment of patients both overseas and domestically. This doesn't include the money that is being sent to academic labs for basic research, and pharmaceutical development.
(PEPFAR, WRAIR, hivresearch.org) - optize, on 10/07/2008, -1/+21It's ok.... Different area codes, it's not considering cheating.

- nikpappagiorgio, on 10/07/2008, -0/+17I thought South Park already cured AIDS? Don't you just need lots of money like Magic Johnson?
- bitterbug, on 10/07/2008, -0/+17it's sad that it's referred to as 'that will Smith movie' instead of that remake of a classic horror novel.

***** Telegraph - forcedfx, on 10/07/2008, -0/+10Nothing an umbrella can't fix.
- naugrim, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8Reporter - "Uhh Mr. Montagnier, can you be sure this vaccine will work?"
Luc Montagnier - "Sure!? We're not just sure, we're HIV positive!"
Reporter - *silence* - floydax, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8I hope you'll never have to feel the pain of having someone you care getting infected with HIV.
- subliminalurge, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8The cancer people must be having a slow week.
- oldhick, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8Seriously? Are you even human? How much did your family hate you to make you this cold?
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -0/+8They day they prove a vaccine for HIV is the day I dump all my money into Thai Airways.
- kmsuperina, on 10/07/2008, -0/+7Although it would be great to have a therapeutic vaccine for HIV, I have to concur that getting an accurate, reputable article from the Telegraph is along the same lines as trying to herd cats.
- jfsimard79, on 10/07/2008, -0/+7You are correct. HIV is the virus.
- Betrayal, on 10/07/2008, -0/+7Yeah we should implement mandatory aids-infections for these suckers over-populating the continent.
- Stevethegreat, on 10/07/2008, -6/+13You're more AIDS ridden than Europe http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:HIV_Epidem.png . In fact Europe is the cleanest places from most diseases, maybe that's because people here are actually educated.
- RudeTurnip, on 10/07/2008, -2/+9Yeah, if you don't count the other diseases that will make your wang rot and fall off.
- justinzagar, on 10/07/2008, -1/+7...and your legs!
- nyx210, on 10/07/2008, -2/+8The drug companies are not amused.
- oli35, on 10/07/2008, -0/+6RIP Freddie
- alexanEmpire, on 10/07/2008, -1/+7No one deserves to die like that. Not to mention it's way too slow.
- oldhick, on 10/07/2008, -1/+7Do they not have penicillin where you live?
- Cornfedhusker, on 10/07/2008, -0/+6I'm not just sure, I'm HIV positive!

- bjs3171, on 10/07/2008, -0/+6what, you think everyone with AIDS would just die off, and after that, no one with the disease would be alive anymore? i seriously doubt that.
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -1/+7Time to start having unprotected sex, spread the news!
- kinerry, on 10/07/2008, -1/+6but I wanna ***** without reprocussions...
- Machismo, on 10/07/2008, -2/+7Sweet, a vaccine? I'll get that and go right to bare-back!
- cheeseplease, on 10/07/2008, -1/+6I wouldn't mind having zombie superpowers. The light is overrated anyway.
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -1/+6awww ***** ! no way!
- JohnboiWaltune, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5The only incurable STDs I'm aware of are herpes, HPV (warts) and AIDS. Herpes and HPV are a nuisance but generally harmless. Most people who have the infection never have symptoms.
Any other nasties you catch from sex can be cured outright by a visit to the doctor.
If you have access to even the most basic medical care, there is nothing you can catch from sex that will make your 'wang fall off'.
In conclusion, when they cure AIDS, there are going to be millions of people ***** in the streets like animals. - yvrview, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5Please tell the MILLIONS of orphaned children that their plight was *preventable*. I am sure they will understand your perspective. http://www.avert.org/aidsorphans.htm
- Icetype, on 10/07/2008, -1/+6You're just being picky.
- Icetype, on 10/07/2008, -1/+6Do they have a cure for abstinence yet? I got that ***** bad.
- inactive, on 10/07/2008, -0/+5It's already 25 years since HIV was found, and every single year, the most reputable researchers would come out and say vaccine is almost here with closing sentence like "Give us more money."
- sharkd, on 10/07/2008, -0/+4Because HIV != AIDS.
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, the total collapse of the human immune system is the result of being infected by Human Immunodeficiency Virus. The virus replicates and attacks the immune system, resulting in a sharp decline in T-cells, suppressing the immune response and making the body vulnerable to infection by a wide range of normally-innocuous bacteria and viruses.
You can be infected with HIV, but still have an intact immune system, but you cannot suffer from AIDS without having an HIV infection. -
